“Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray releases will feature titles—such as The Amazing Spider-Man™, Total Recall, The Karate Kid, Battle: Los Angeles and The Other Guys—sourced from pristine 4K masters and presented at high-bitrate 1080p resolution, with expanded color showcasing more of the wide range of rich color contained in the original source. When upscaled via the Sony 4K Ultra HD TVs, these discs serve as an ideal way for consumers to experience near-4K picture quality. SPHE also plans to utilize available high quality 4K masters for select upcoming new release Blu-ray titles. “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray Discs can be played on all existing Blu-ray Disc players.

I don't like where this is going. There is absolutely NO reason why the original release should have not looked as good as this new 'mastered in 4k' edition. It's still on a normal blu-ray disc, encoded in the same AVC format and in the same 1080p resolution. The only difference here is that it has obviously been re-scanned at 4k, treated with better care when being mastered and encoded better with a higher bitrate.
Looks like what will happen is that a normal 'poorer quality' blu will come out first and then 6 months down the line a 'mastered in 4k' will come out to milk us even more.
And I thought Sony were one of the better studios......
We cant forget that, finding new ways to sale old stuff, is one of the secrets to success and we wouldn't have a Blu-ray format without that concept. These type of methods pertaining to transfers that should have been treated as such in the first place are unfortunate but smart business and maybe could have been the plan all along. I myself never buy a bluray unless it has incredible package or picture quality which saves me the stress of dealing with this BS! Saying that, I may finally buy Ghostbusters in HD after seeing how this looks.

I will firing up ghostbusters tonight. Was impressed with the screen grabs. I popped in the disc and for the very first time, I have a true xyvcc image (deep color) transmitted to the tv. After all these years of blu, this is the first.

You have to have a xvYCC TV and blu ray player to view the full 24 bit colour picture depth and not the usual RGB coding. This leads to more gradients of colour and leads to higher quality reds etc.,.
Luckily, I am able to view this expanded colour. I am watching ghostbusters now and this is the best it has ever looked. I am we'll impressed with this version. The colors and vivid and the contrast is not too high. The streams from the proton packs is spot on. Also grain is visible and has not been dnr'd out. The outdoor scenes in daylight, you can now make out the clouds in the sky. The night shots have a pop about them too.
When rick moranis is running away towards the cafe, he runs passed some shrubs. The green is vivd and the red roses shine.
Sound is standard Dolby true hd 5.1 with a rate of 1.5 Mbps, so I'm guessing its 16 bit?????
None of my other blurays in my collection transmit x.v. Color or xvvYCC 24 bit or deep color, and reading, this isn't in the BDA specifications. I take it these are the first discs to support this then ?

It would be interesting to find out which sets support Deep Color. Poking through my Blu-ray player's menu I noticed it supports it. Not sure about my set, though. And I don't have any of the 'Mastered in 4K' discs to test it out.
Dolby true hd 5.1 with a rate of 1.5 Mbps = Yes, it is 16-bit. Is the core track 448 Kbps or 640 Kbps?
Going through the menus on my series 7 Samsung Plasma and Samsung Blu-ray player I was really pleased to find that I had xvYCC and Deep colour! Played my copy of Ghostbusters 4K and it looked absolutely fantastic. Got Spiderman & Total Recall on order from Zavvi as well now! :movie:
I saw a leaflet in my local electronics store today saying you can have all 8 for free, once you buy the TV....
