Now's your chance to own a piece of limited edition cinema history. On 22nd November our editions of the restored and reconstructed Metropolis will be released on DVD and Blu-ray.

With its dizzying depiction of a futuristic cityscape and alluring female robot, Metropolis is among the most famous of all German films and the mother of sci-fi cinema (an influence on Blade Runner and Star Wars, among countless other films). Directed by the legendary Fritz Lang (M, Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse,The Big Heat, etc.), its jaw-dropping production values, iconic imagery, and modernist grandeur – it was described by Luis Buñuel as "a captivating symphony of movement" – remain as powerful as ever.

Along side the standard DVD and Blu-ray editions we will be releasing a limited edition dual format Steelbook. Over the next 48 hours we are giving away a FREE Metropolis T-shirt with every pre-order for this very limited dual format release. T-Shirts will be shipped within 14 days and you will be guaranteed early delivery of the steelbook. The set comes with 3 discs, 1 x Blu-ray and 2 x DVD, special features are listed below.

This offer is strictly on a first come first served basis. Artwork for illustrative purposes only.

Metropolis Steelbook Special Features:
• 150-minute reconstructed and restored 2010 version (including 25 minutes of footage previously thought lost to the world)
• Separate DVD and BD editions with wraparound embossed sleeve, or Ltd Ed Steelbook Dual Format edition
• Pristine new HD transfer (1080p on Blu-ray)
• New 2010 symphony orchestra studio recording of the original 1927 Gottfried Huppertz score in 5.1

3 million discs lost.
Average price per disc probably around 10 pounds?

10 x 3 million = 30,000,000 loss + the warehouse of course

That's quite a big loss :emb:.

I wonder if this steelbook would've been scarce if this never happened? I mean, EUREKA steelbooks are usually not very sought after (except the Touch of Evil steelbook maybe)

Yes unfortunately the Sony warehouse fire destroyed a lot of Eureka stock including the steelbooks that were released by them at the time - one of the reasons why Metropolis and Shogun Assassin are rarer than they should be.

I think I remember that the Eureka steelbooks stored there ran into quite a few thousands and was the last of the run of those titles produced in blu-ray steelbook format.

I preordered this before I became a steelbook collector. I think my first steel was Avatar, this came second. I'd be happy to part with my Avatar steel any day, but not this.

Order of Eureka rareness, mint and sealed of course...IMO

1. Shogun Assassin
2. Metropolis
3. Touch of Evil

Touch Of Evil that rare? I guess it was an HMV exclusive for a while...but it's still on sale on the Eureka shop and I worked at HMV for 3 years running and they had 2 copies of the steelbook in stock for ages until I bought one with my discount for under a tenner...had a duplicate copy and sold it on eBay for not much less than £15 or something. Wouldn't it sell for more if it was rare?

The other two are definitely gold. I gave up on Shogun Assassin quite quickly and just got the amaray, and Metropolis I was still kinda hoping I would find a steelbook copy but guess I'll just get the amaray too...

Wish I'd known Touch of Evil was rare, they had a load in FOPP (origZavvi )for £5 just after Christmas (only picked up one - for my brother).

Last time I was in there it was Rumble fish for a fiver.

Dont forget the Human centipede, a number of those steelbooks were tragically destroyed in the fire too...although some would argue that on this particular occasion thats not a bad thing ...:p

Zavvi is owned by HMV and often has old stock on sale.

Zavvi is not owned by HMV and has never been, Zavvi is owned by The Hut Group.

Zavvi used to be a chain of shores selling DVDs, CDs etc (therefore a competitor to HMV) when it went bust just the rights to use the Zavvi name were bought by The Hut Group to use as an online retailer

Although Touch of Evil is rarer than the others, it isn't any rarer than any Play releases that went OOS.

Wouldn't consider it rare at all.
