How many people open their Steelbooks when they buy them or do you just leave them sealed.

So far i have 13 Steelbooks and have opened 3 i opened Angels and Demons,Inglorious Bastards and District 9.

I fear if i open my pirates and nightmare before christmas ones i will have to modify them to be able to put the discs in and not have them in a sleeve

I used to be against collecting Sealed copies. Now, I do collect multiple editions of the same title. Or If I find an extra OCD Mint copy, sometimes I will grab a spare ....

When I first landed here (from whatever planet I'm on..) it was absolutely taboo to open steels as a rule - well certainly you couldn't sell or trade anything that wasn't sealed - but noticed that in the last year or so people are increasingly open :))) to the idea of trading/buying open steels to ensure it's definitely mint (I guess) - in some cases Ninjas ONLY want an open steel!

All goes to show what a wonderfully eclectic mix we Ninjas are - all the same, yet so, so different - I guess that sums up HDN really :)

PS open all the way (unless for trade) I'd never get away with buying any steels if I wasn't going to watch the film inside!!

No category for me, I open all my Region B with french subs ... the rest because of doubt stay sealed, I do the same for my collector's box sets ... usually ^^

so there is many chance I open my steels but for some reasons most of them stay sealed and this may be defini... :p

Am close to 100 % opened steels for France and Germany steelbooks ... exception done with the FNAC versions because if I open them ... the booklet falls :( ^^

I do buy opened steelbooks for the same reason just like IM2, if NO french subs I need my steelbook sealed or I pass ...

I don't open them, but I want to. Except that the worry that they're dinged and damaged underneath, and I wouldn't be able to replace them because they're exclusives that I only have one copy of, prevents me from opening them.

These are my most usual scenarios

1) I don't have the movie. I see there is a nice steelbook version of the movie and I buy it. If I want to watch it --> I open it and watch it.

2) I already have that movie, but I like it. I may want to buy a steelbook. If the cover art is nice enough I buy it. I don't open it.

Of course I can also buy used steelbooks, which isn't unusual at all, and I can gladly own them even if they are not sealed :D Because the most important things that matter to me are that the art is appealing and that I want to have it. Nothing else matters... :scat:

This keeping a sealed copy hobby is getting expensive. If the copies are flawless, I have to buy 2, one to enjoy, one to keep sealed.

Here is what I have sealed/OCD mint:

JLW target
Thor 2 BB
Thor 2 Zavvi
Thor 2 kimchi Lenti
Leon kimchi exclusive full slip
The wrestler 1/4 PA
The aviator Zavvi
Cinderella Zavvi

But these are all spare copies. I have an opened copy of each. Ill only keep a spare sealed if its OCD mint collectors item as an investment and for fun but its an expensive hobby. As a rule if thumb, I like to double up on all Marvel films from now on. If there's is a cherry spare available

8 sealed
170+ opened

To me a sealed steelbook is like having a girlfriend you don't wanna play with. Sooner or later it'll be in the hands of someone else and you'll regret never unwrapping when you had the chance. Don't just be friends with your Steelbooks, be intimate and enjoy your time together

Quite a flawed analogy cos not everyone is interested in opening a steel. Every collector has their preference. At the end of the day, it's simply a disc or more in a steel package with a value dependent on the demand/desire of the interested individual.

As for this Kimchi exclusive, I would like for a similar process initiated with the Frozen release. Though far fetched at this time, I can only hope it'll be done ;).

I for one completely agree with you:scat::scat: no friend zone for me :D

love it. lol.
Though what if I already have another version of the same steel opened...wouldnt keeping the 2nd sealed count as 'looking but not touching' :hilarious:

Those who never open their steelbooks are not real steelbook collectors IMO

they have no idea about the real quality, the real worth of a steelbook…. no clue about the finishing quality, the colours, the inside artwork, the back artwork or the embossing, let alone any real appreciation for the film itself. :movie:

Its no wonder that things like gloss, discs and content have only become a vastly more important trend in the last few years, as steelbook collecting has opened up to a much larger audience of sensible film fans, who appreciate the special edition packaging that a steelbook truly is. :movie:

Only sealed is a fad, a strange niche for a small minority, which goes hand in hand with their bizarre obsession for the utterly worthless card info sheet, also known as a “slip” :ugh: :D

95% opened and wearing see through body armour (SC2's) :D
J Cards are filed away. Steelbooks are shown in their naked glory except for the odd double/triple and a couple of fancy Asian steels

In most cases open and mint is better than sealed anyway, it's annoying to say that you have a mint steelbook if it is sealed and you can't see its back. This is not pessimistic thinking, just realistic. If I can't see the back art I open it, even if I have an amaray copy. Not just because of the possible imperfections, but to fully enjoy the item. Of course if you only care about steelbook's resale value or you think that it is way too rare to open or you are double dipping, well then it's probably just natural to keep it sealed.

I posted earlier in the thread that I buy two steels for new releases, one to open and one to keep sealed. Not anymore unless the steel is special. Now I'll buy one steelbook and open it. It's all about enjoying the steels to me these days and not just looking at it collect dust on my shelf. The market is saturated so it doesn't pay to have spares, again, unless it's something special.
