Sorry if this is the wrong place but as it directly affects steelbooks (especially exclusives) in the UK I thought it would be a good heads up.

The news saddens me as Play were one of the best steelbook retailers. Their packaging and exclusives were second to none. I just hope someone picks up the baton........amazon I'm looking at you!

:ohno: This may mean steels being sold in UK at Japanese prices?

...but without insane postage costs that are higher than the cost of the steelbook itself :hilarious:

The marketplace.

:wtf: so will play.com be going completely, and replaced with rakuten?
presumably anyone going tp the play.com site would be redirected to the 'new' site.
which will be the old playtrade marketplace.

So have we then, 100% seen the end of any exclusive steelbooks on play.com/rakuten? unless studios sell directly on the marketplace (which i presume they wouldn't)
no hope of any devision existing for exclusives, selling via the marketplace?

i kinda feel guilty for lapping up all those cheap steels, could it be that play.com made a loss on them?
maybe that loss contributed to the decision to shut up shop.

Does this mean the site will be purely B2B and private consumers won't be able to buy or sell or trade anything?

I don't know how the play marketplace works or will work, but I assumed it would be like Amazon's 3p sellers. Anyone with a valid bank account can sell on amazon.

I don't think those steelbooks would have been sold at a loss, no business would lose money like that although to be fair there profit margin on them may not be as high as it could have been. It's a real shame because they actually listened to our community and acted upon our requests for better packaging. I think it would be a tough job to get another retailer to do that, especially now that HMV are looking to be in a dodgy situation. I do believe there will be no exclusive steelbooks from them now and Lawless was there last unfortunatly.

Did Play say when their current website will stop trading? Does anybody know? There are still some items I would like to secure before it goes and I have Superpoints to use. I guess I should do it straight away but I cannot use some of my points until Jan 29th!

Not until March iirc, you should be good.

I've been with Play.com since 2001. It's going to be odd I won't be able to log on to my usual site anymore.
