Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have announced that they are hosting a We are PlayStation photography competition that has now launched in Europe. Electronic Theatre ImageThe team?s jubilation at getting a BUZZ! question right; the laughter of a room full of SingStar fans; the entertaining journeys playing your PlayStation Portable! They?re all classic PlayStation moments that you?ve seen or experienced hundreds of times - but can you capture them in a photo? If you can, your name could be in the hat to win some great prizes. There?s also the possibility of a serious cash prize, the possibility of the images being used in future PlayStation campaigns as well as a new Sony D-SLR a350 digital camera and lens. Get snapping and upload your photos by the 16th March 2009 for a chance to win.

The rules are simple ? capture the perfect image of you, your friends or your family enjoying a PlayStation moment with your PLAYSTATION3, PlayStation2 or PlayStation Portable and upload it to www.weareplaystation.com. There are different categories your photos could enter: Caught in the Moment, Unexpected Places, PlayStation Parties, True Love and Endless Play. Of course, PlayStation is all about its community ? and that?s why we?re asking you to judge the first round of the competition. PlayStation fans can visit the website and decide which shots will be put before the judges by rating each photo with a score from one to five. Also, every time you Electronic Theatre Imageenter the site, you can give your favourite image a secret ?Super Vote? which will be used to determine the finalists in case several entries generate the same overall rating. Will The PS3 Rule Each Genre?

When gamers go to select their console, they first look to the available and impending software, as they most certainly should. And as we all know, everyone has different tastes and preferences when it comes to various genres; for instance, while some can't stand the idea of a role-playing game, others put the niche genre #1 on their priority list.

Therefore, wouldn't it be important to determine which of the available consoles has the best games for your favorite genres? It's a legitimate question but in considering the answer - and after trading in Star Ocean: The Last Hope - I'm starting to wonder if the PlayStation 3 will have the best exclusive titles in each available genre. Of course, I'm no psychic and the generation is far from over, which means we could see many, many more Xbox 360 exclusives that could reign supreme. I can only go on the current information, and in doing so, I come up with the following assessment:

Action/adventure: Obviously, the biggest genre out there, and most titles are multiplatform, anyway. But really, for the time being, this seems to come down to the 360's Gears of War and Left 4 Dead titles versus the PS3's MGS4, Uncharted and God of War, with the possibility of certain IPs like Heavy Rain, Quantum Theory, and inFamous having good potential. We should also toss in Alan Wake for the 360 as well. I'm sorry, but I just don't see the 360 stacking up to what the PS3 has; GoW and Uncharted trump Gears, IMO. Heck, MGS4 alone beats out everything else in my book. I doubt many would disagree.

Platformer: Eh, this isn't the huge genre it once was, but all I've got to say is that right now, it begins and ends with LittleBigPlanet. Not much else to talk about.

Racing: This is hard because most all racing games these days are multiplatform, and it really only comes down to a battle between Gran Turismo and Forza. I'm not going to get into a long drawn-out compare-and-contrast session, but anyone who actually knows something about cars and racing realizes that GT vastly outstrips Forza in a multitude of ways. Ask any amateur racer, mechanic, etc.; just trust us on this. If they do a Forza 3, in no way will it be able to compete on a simulated/realistic level with GT5. Plain and simple.

First-person shooter (FPS): This will always be a hotly contested genre, but right now, it boils down to Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 versus the Halo titles, and the result is a no-brainer at this point in time. I'm sure we'll see another 360 exclusive FPS that should rock our socks but if it's out there, currently in the works, I haven't heard of it yet. Right now, the benchmark is KZ2, and R2 is pretty damn good, too.

Role-Playing: This is the only genre where the PS3 may not end up leading the 360 in my eyes. I may not have liked Star Ocean, but it certainly wasn't a bad game and many RPG fans would've liked to have had it on the PS3. Furthermore, past RPGs like Lost Odyssey (which I loved; I hope they do a sequel) and Blue Dragon have really made me turn to the 360 for my RPG fix. It'll probably happen again if they do a LO sequel, too. But I have faith in Final Fantasy Versus XIII - even if it is about a million years off - and NIS America has a currently unannounced PS3 RPG we're all waiting to hear about this week. I'm also waiting for Atlus to jump fully into this new generation, so there's a lot more to come in the future... For now, though, the edge definitely goes to the 360.

I know there are other genres, like Puzzle and Flight and things like that, but these are the major ones. There's the fighting genre, but are there any exclusive fighting titles out there? I mean, significant ones? Obviously, the key lies with exclusives, and right now, I really can't see how the 360 matches up competitively with the PS3. But again, things can always change, and we have yet to see what happens at E3... In short, nothing is definitive.

Yeah it markets to parents buying for kids ... thankfully it has kid like games in there or harmless ones ... be hilarious if it was paired with games like Dead Space, RE or Killzone LOL

Antivirus now Available for the PS3 - (Since 2.70)

Our good friends at Trend Micro have been a leader in Anti-Virus services for quite some time, and now they offer there services for the Playstation 3 web browser.

It seems that with the latest update of firmware 2.70, Trend Micro is offering a trial service for the Playstation 3 web browser in two varieties.

The first of which is a web filter, which will help you filter out adult content and spam to keep your children safe on the web. The filter will remove images and search results of innappropriate matter as well as block known websites that contain adult content and illegal matter.

The second is a privacy lock, that helps protect your personal data such as email addresses, passwords and credit card information from falling into the wrong hands. The filter also eliminates most spoof sites of your favorite web destinations, like Paypal knockoffs and Ebay shams.

While security on the Playstation 3 has never been an issue, it is nice to know that a company is stepping up to offer services to the unique platform, providing an added peace of mind to an ever-growing market.

While Trend Micro originally added this feature in 2007 with firmware 2.0, it is now readily available through the browser menu, for fast and easy access.

Last month, we gave you the official list of updates that came with the 2.70 update, but somehow, this slipped through the radar.

For instructions on how to install, read below:

The software is currently available for free for a limited time, while Trend Micro works out the kinks. To take advantage of this offer, open your Playstation 3's web browser, hit Triangle on your controller, and scroll down to 'Browser Security'. Click on the 'Trend Micro for PS3' link and follow the instructions.

That's about it. We'll keep you posted on new services as they come available.

I am not sure if there's money to be made here.

i know. if trend were smart about marketing, they first would hire individuals to code for ps3 viruses. then after everyone is freaking out, unveil the virus protection for $120 a year. just like mission impossible 2.

on an unrelated note, the redface and : o smilies are the same. see:

Hey folks,

In about an hour (4PM BST) PSN will undergo essential maintenance.

If you are signed in to PSN before the maintenance commences, you should not experience any problem. If you attempt to sign in during the maintenance, your sign in may be denied. Account Management and the PlayStation Store may also be temporarily unavailable. Online Gaming should not be interrupted, provided that you are signed in to PSN.

We anticipate that this maintenance will finish at 20:30 BST - however the effects on PSN Sign-ins should only last until 18:30 BST.

Any questions - fire away - that was alot of info!

Call it a spring clean - PSN is now handling more titles and services than ever before, and naturally maintenance is required to keep things organised
