Sony issued a consumer alert earlier this week advising all PlayStation 3 owners to only use first-party, genuine PS3 wireless controllers. The company says counterfeit controllers, which look identical in appearance, have been introduced into the market and could explode.

"SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation 3 wireless controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous," Sony warns.

"It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, or other property."

Sony also said it plans to introduce software updates to disable these counterfeit and unlicensed controllers.

EA feels PS3 can catch Xbox 360 sales in UK

Electronic Arts has said that the company feels the PlayStation 3 still has a shot at catching up with sales of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console in the UK.

"We could certainly see Sony come back - in the UK it's still a head-to-head competition between PlayStation and Xbox, but on the continent Sony is traditionally stronger than Microsoft," said the firm's European senior VP, Jens Uwe Intat, during a chat with MCV.

Still, Intat said EA welcomes competition between the two platform holders – after all, it means more consumers for the publishing giant to flog its games to – before taking the time to comment on both Sony and Microsoft’s foray in to the motion-control market.

"But we're very happy to watch the competition, because as long as they're competing to get more consumers in, there are more people we can sell games to."

"It's interesting to see that both companies embarking on a slightly different path when it comes to controlling games. Kinect and Move are both very interesting ideas."

Sucker Punch would give 'serious thought' to inFamous 3

Sucker Punch co-founder Bruce Oberg has admitted that the studio would give “serious thought” to the notion of creating a third instalment in the critically acclaimed inFamous franchise.

The North American-based developer has currently got its hands full with inFamous 2, which will release exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in 2011. While it doesn’t own the IP, Oberg noted that the firm continues to enjoy a “great” relationship with Sony.

"We'll see where we want to go next," said Oberg, during an interview with the folks at Eurogamer.

"That could be with Sony. We have a great relationship with them. We love the PlayStation platform. I'm not lying when I tell you it's a really killer technological platform for us to work on.”

"The support and marketing, and also their approach to us, to let us make the game we want to make, is really incredible. Our relationship with Sony has been just incredible, all through the Sly series and all through inFamous."

Touching on the subject of a potential third game, Oberg replied, "We would give it serious, serious thought," before describing Sucker Punch as ‘really lucky’ to be in the position it's in light of the lack of fresh output as far as new IP is concerned.

"We know how lucky we are. We're really lucky to have such a great relationship with such a top-flight publisher that lets us create original IP. The number of studios creating original IP is few and far between."

Dead Space 2 dev hopeful for survival horror revival

Visceral Games’ Steve Papoutis has revealed that he’d love to see a resurgence of survival horror titles on the market following the release of Dead Space 2, believing the genre has witnessed a decline in recent times as they prove tricky to develop.

Speaking to the chaps at CVG in London recently, the Dead Space 2 producer commented: "I think it would be awesome to see more games like Dead Space out there, there would be stuff for us to learn from and keep the genre going."

"I think there are a lot of people that enjoy it and it would be great to see that so I hope that happens."

Touching on the dip in the number of games in the genre as of late, Papoutis offered that aside from proving fundamentally “very difficult” to make, survival horror games may not exactly be flavour of the month in terms of perceived mass market appeal.

"I don't know, it's very difficult to make survival horror games, there's so much that has to go into each moment and planning out each thing, understanding that at any moment a player may not even see what you want them to see, there is a lot of work that goes into that.”

"Also, I think some of it may even be demand in terms of what games you see that are the big blockbuster games that are selling gangbusters, that may be a motivator," he explained.

"They're challenging, they're not easy games to make by any means. There are twitch action elements that need to be really good, then there's the atmosphere and tension building, story, character design, all those elements that go into it that aren't as formulaic as some other genres of games.

"For us, we're doing this game because we like horror, science-fiction, so it makes perfect sense for us but I don't know what other publishers thoughts are on that."

Dead Space 2 signals the return of engineer Isaac Clarke, who having survived his first encounter with the Necromorphs in the original game now finds himself battling the beasties on board a hulking space station know as the Sprawl.

The game’s out on January 25 for PS3.

Report: HD, 3D Re-releases For Many PS2 Series Coming To PS3

Online reports suggest that Ubisoft and Warner Bros. Interactive are planning their own HD-enabled, PlayStation 3 compilation re-releases of PS2-era games, similar to those released and announced by Sony.

French site JeuxVideo cites unnamed sources [French language link] in suggesting that Ubisoft will release Prince of Persia Trilogy 3D, Splinter Cell Trilogy and Rayman Trilogy on November 4th, while Warner Bros. Interactive will release Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection HD on November 18th.

JeuxVideo's report suggests the Ubisoft titles will be available for 40 Euros and will feature remastered, high-definition and stereoscopic 3D-enabled versions of the PS2 editions of the appropriate series, while the Mortal Kombat collection will retail for 30 Euros and include high definition versions of the series' first three arcade releases.

The Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia collections are currently listed with different release dates on British retailer Zavvi.com, and were previously listed by Amazon France, according to VG247. The Mortal Kombat collection has appeared and disappeared from various U.S. and U.K. retailers in recent months as well.

The reported re-release plans come in the wake of Sony's recent announcements of remastered, stereoscopic 3D-enabled PS3 collections for PS2-era games from the Ico and Sly Cooper franchises, and last November's release of the similar God of War Collection

Sony also announced re-release plans for a number of recent PS3 titles today: the publisher debuted a "Game of the Year" Edition of Uncharted 2 that will include a voucher for all of the game's DLC; and an expansion of the $29.99 Greatest Hits program that includes MAG, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Demon's Souls, Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: World at War, and Tekken 5.

Facebook And PlayStation Take Their Friendship To The Next Level

Via: Forbes Blog

Last month, Sony released a new firmware update for its PlayStation 3 console, which included support for 3-D Blu-ray movie playback. But relatively unnoticed in the update was the deeper integration between Facebook and PS3, which marks an important step for Facebook-connected games spreading off the social network onto other platforms like videogame consoles.

In essence, the update gives game developers for the PS3 access to gamers’ Facebook profiles, if they have one, and their social graph (i.e. list of friends), photos and other profile information.

“We’ve pretty much opened up the entire Facebook API to our game developers,” says Eric Lempel, Sony Computer Entertainment’s vice president of network operations. “They’re able to pull any piece of information from Facebook, as well as push information out to Facebook.”

What this means is that PS3 games will be able to incorporate your Facebook information into the game-play (if you give them permission to do so). Lempel gave a basic example: maybe you’re driving around in a PS3 racing game and instead of a regular billboard on the side of the road, you see one with a picture of your friend on it. Or maybe you’ll be fighting a boss in a game that looks like your Facebook friend. Or a music videogame like Rock Band might know what music you’re a fan of on Facebook and customize your track list based on that.

Lempel wouldn’t name any specific projects, but says that the biggest game developers are interested in taking advantage of the new Facebook integration. It wouldn’t be a surprise if a videogame giant like Electronic Arts, which bought social games developer Playfish last year, has started working on something. Expect to see a few new PS3 titles that use this integration come out by the end of the year.

“Our focus with the integration is to promote the next-generation of social,” says Gareth Davis, a platform manager for Facebook who overseas games. Davis notes that Facebook to date has more than 200 million people playing its social games. PlayStation hopes the social element will attract more players to its system too.

Among consoles, and probably among non-PC systems, this is the deepest integration any system has done with Facebook to date. The PS3 previously allowed games to publish players’ in-game accomplishments to Facebook, browse and edit Facebook photos on the PS3 and even link your PS3 account with your Facebook account. Microsoft’s Xbox Live network has some Facebook integration as well, letting players share status updates, photos and game achievements on the social network. And Nintendo’s DSi handheld console lets users upload the photos they take with their device directly onto Facebook.

With this deep integration, Facebook’s vision of spreading games across platforms through Facebook Connect is becoming clearer. Earlier this year, I spoke with Davis, who was interested in “multi-device gaming.” This, he said, was the ability for gamers to simultaneously play the same game on several different devices, like an iPhone, a PS3 and a PC, synchronized through Facebook Connect. Now that a console like PS3 is deeply integrated with Facebook, this might also enable games played across the social network and the console.

Toys R US Buy 2 Get 1 Annual Sale

This can be put in hot deals in a few days, just figured more people would read it in the PS3 threads.

As has become an annual event, Toys R Us will be holing a “buy 2 get 1 free” sale on video game titles starting this weekend. Gamers will have until October 16 to take advantage of the deal. We’ve posted a few details from last year’s sale below, which will most likely apply this year as well.

- This deal includes accessories from $5 – $100
- Because they are considered to be gift cards, new point cards are not included in the sale (unless they come in some sort of bundle packs)
- Unfortunately, the deal is only for residents of the United States
- Check your local store regarding preorders – There may be a chance to preorder certain games at the register
- You can take advantage of the deal numerous times (meaning you can have another order of three games)
- If the game has been opened, you can only return the original purchase for the same title
- Bundles should be included in the deal

starts sunday jef.

Thanks... :)

I went to Toys R Us on-line and noticed that their ad ended on the 9th, so I was thinking that it was going to start soon...

Do you know for sure if the accessories are going to be included?

I'd like to get:

PS Move Charge Station
Atelier Rorona

and either PS3 Official Blue Tooth or another game.
