PS3 devs starting to push console to full potential, says Sony

Sony’s vice president of Worldwide Studios Europe Michael Denny has claimed that PlayStation 3-exclusive developers are already starting to push the company's flagship games console to its full potential.

Chatting with the folks at OPM, Denny revealed that one of the key components in the success of its in-house talent boils down to the relationship between major studios, who chip in to help each other out while maintaining their independent views and creativity.

"A big philosophy behind forming Worldwide Studios is that we can have a network of key first-party developers who are able to share ideas, best practice, thoughts - creatively and otherwise,” he commented.

In particular, the executive highlighted the relationship between Sony stable mates Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch, responsible for the likes of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and inFamous, respectively.

"I think the success of these studios is that a lot of them retain their independent views and creativity but lean on each other for support," explained Denny.

"What's exciting is that we're five years into PS3 and developers are really starting to push PlayStation to its full potential... Then you later on top of that Move launching, then you layer onto that the potential of 3D."

"It's exiting times to be involved in PlayStation," enthused Denny.

Sony considers incorporating Android into more products

At a Google TV press event in Tokyo recently, Sony TV division head Yoshihisa Ishida told reporters that the company is, indeed, "thinking about using Android in more consumer electronics products." Of course, he didn't say exactly which products, although we do have it on good authority that Sony Ericsson has an Android 3.0 mobile gaming platform in the works -- which probably explains why the PlayStation division is on the lookout for Android developers as well.

SCEA now shipping standalone 320GB PS3 to retailers

Sony America has confirmed that it will begin shipping standalone 320GB PlayStation 3 SKUs to retailers across the country starting from today.

The high-end machine was previously only available as part of a PlayStation Move pack, which retailed for a wallet-draining $399.99 USD. However, the unit will now be up for grabs for $349.99 USD minus Sony’s motion-controller and is being aimed at download-hungry consumers.

"The digital distribution trend is undeniably gaining momentum, and we here at PlayStation are committed to providing you with the hardware you need to support as much downloadable media as possible,” said Sony in a statement issued today.

"The 320GB PS3 system, which will retail for $349.99, has the largest storage capacity of any next-gen console and will continue to provide the same high-quality gaming that PlayStation fans have come to expect. For only $50 more, you get twice the storage capacity of the 160GB system."

The 320GB was released in UK territories last month

ZeniMax snaps up Shinji Mikami's Tango Gameworks

Industry giant ZeniMax Meda Inc. has announced the acquisition of Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami’s Tango Gameworks.

The studio, based in Tokyo, will continue to run under Mikami’s leadership who will serve as creative lead on all future endeavours within the company.

Speaking on the acquisition, the former Capcom dev commented, "It's refreshing to find a publisher who understands, trusts, and supports the development of blockbuster games and works to make it a collaborative effort."

"The library of AAA franchise titles ZeniMax owns speaks for itself. We are very excited to be joining ZeniMax and working with a company that is dedicated to creating the best games ever made."

"Shinji Mikami has earned a stellar reputation as one of the industry's finest game developers," enthused ZeniMax Media boss, Robert Altman. "He has repeatedly created hit titles that have earned praise from fans and critics around the world. We share his vision for innovative, genre-defining games and look forward to working with Shinji and his team at Tango."

Founded in 1999, ZeniMax owns a number of development studios including the likes of id Software, Bethesda Softworks and Arkane Studios, the latter of which was snapped up earlier this year.

Keiji Inafune to leave Capcom this month

Capcom’s global head of production and Mega Man mastermind Keiji Inafune has announced that he will be departing the Japanese giant at the end of the month.

Speaking on his blog, the Dead Rising producer expressed his desire to move on to pastures new as he wasn’t keen on merely settling down, observing that doing so would effectively be the final nail in the coffin from a game developer’s point of view.

“It would probably be good for me to sit gracefully in this seat and become a leading figure in the industry," he wrote. ("However, I cannot do this. Settling down means death for a creator. As long as you are a creator, you cannot settle down."

And, despite previously letting slip that he disliked his job as of late and wanted to retire early, Inafune had nothing but praise to offer upon reflecting on his 23 years with the industry giant, commenting:

"Capcom is truly a good company," adding, "I love Capcom. Probably more than anyone in the world. However, it's not always the case that your hopes are realized. Just as it was with the girlfriend I loved long ago.”

"There was a chance that I could continue to be Capcom's power. I bet on that chance until the end. The means of both Capcom and myself to be happy. That was surely possible. However, now that chance is completely closed off."

Having said that, Inafune indicated that it was unlikely he would be up for working with the company again in the future: "Capcom must, from here on out, walk without Inafune. I too can not depend on Capcom," he said.

Inafune has been fairly outspoken in recent months on his views in regards to the Japanese videogames industry, labelling it as some five years behind that of Western efforts

Sony begins sending PS3 beta invites through PSN messages

Sony has started sending out beta invites to users directly through PlayStation Network messages, rather than through redeemable codes in email messages, as the company has done in the past.

Thousands of surprised PSN users are finding Killzone 3 beta invites in their inboxes today, as Sony begins to implement its new beta invite system. These official beta invites carry the official PSN logo as well as the beta name in the "From" section of the message. At the bottom of each message is a link to the PlayStation Store to download the beta itself.

Clickable links mark a clear improvement over the cumbersome 12-character codes that users had to redeem to enter into past betas—not that those were all that difficult to begin with. This serves as a reminder that, nearly four years after the launch of the PlayStation Network, Sony continues to improve the experience for its users, bit by bit.

Hi Everyone! Back in 2008, we unveiled the official Bluetooth Headset for the PlayStation 3. Since then, many of you added it to your arsenal of PS3 must-haves. Today we’re excited to announce a new version of the official Bluetooth Headset for the PS3 system. It will be available at retailers near you this month at the same price ($49.99 MSRP) as the earlier version of this headset.

5157248508_3f6fb67237_z.jpg

The new Bluetooth Headset for the PS3 offers the same unparalleled gaming experience as the previous model, making it a must have for intense online multiplayer games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, MAG or the highly anticipated sci-fi shooter, Killzone 3. It offers a dual-microphone design, automatic pairing via USB cable with the PS3**, in-game headset status indicator**, an easily accessible microphone mute button, and a charging cradle which also functions as a desktop microphone**. On top of all of that, it’s the only device to offer High-Quality (HQ) mode** which delivers crystal clear voice chat while gaming on the PS3.

So what’s different, you ask? New features include a redesign, making it sleeker, high-gloss and more compact – 30% smaller than the original model. In addition, the Bluetooth Headset now has built-in noise cancellation for filtering out ambient noise when used with the PS3 system as well as your mobile phone. Gadget fiends take note – the new Bluetooth Headset isn’t just for gaming. The improved mobile phone feature support allows you to use features such as three-way calling and call waiting. And with nearly six hours of talk time, you can easily take the Bluetooth Headset with you straight from the living room to the streets.
