This film caper which is clearly the foundation of the classic TV comedy Porridge is about a criminal Dodger Lane (Peter Sellers) who plans the perfect robbery while in prison
What he doesn't bank on is the new Screw played by Lionel Jeffries (clearly the basis of McKay in Porridge) who tries to make his life a misery. Very funny and like Blazing Saddles
seriously politically incorrect. Gets heavily edited on TV.

This crime thriller stars Jack Hawkins as Lt Co Hyde who leads a bunch of former army veterans to rob a major bank. A remarkable film for it's time in which he basically blackmails
7 former army personnel to help him. They all have something to hide. One is a homosexual, one is in the black market, one is selling porn, one is heavy in debt etc and he uses that
information to "convince them" to help him. A lot of fun along the way and serious below the knuckle dialogue for an early 60's film. Superb crime thriller and you'll never guess the ending.

An example of the dialogue You just don't expect this in a early 60's film

Walking up the stairs Major Race sees a portrait of Co Hydes wife on the wall

Major Race: Is that your wife?
Lt Col Hyde: yes
Major Race: Is she dead?
Lt Col. Hyde. No. No. I regret to say the ***** is still going strong!

I remember really enjoying this when I first saw it a few years ago... kind of loses its charm on rewatch though.

Knives Out
6/10
Think this will be quite popular. Great cast, well made. Murder mystery not really my bag, so a bit under generous score. Critics really liked it. Worth a watch.

Yet another Korean masterpiece. Emotional, gripping, full of twists, wonderful acting, engaging, beautifully written and acted. This movie i will remember. One of those true gems that once in a while we as the audience great treated with. Don't miss out!

A true gem. Just hope one day an Asian company releases a beautiful Steelbook and/or slip release of this beauty.

Rating > easily 5 Ninjas = Excellent

Some big names casted for this one, with Scorsese directing so somewhat surprised to find this as a Netflix release.
Story though wasn't all that great and felt overly stretched out with a 3.5hr running time.
It will likely be compared with 'Goodfellas' which IMO is far better and well done movie ... and in shorter time frame :D
Well acted and overall decent, but a one time watch.

I'm not a huge fan of the first movie (3-3.5/5), but it was a good watch and I've seen it multiple times because of my niece and that damn "Let it go" song. I thought there were a lot of plot holes in this new one and it just wasn't well paced at all. Kind of glad there isn't one memorable song in it too, meaning hopefully, my niece won't want this playing day in day out whenever I see her.

Brilliant, was great to see so many faces all back together in one film. Haven't seen a great mafia film of that calibre since the likes of Casino. Was very impressed by it

This excellent b/w crime caper stars Jack Hawkins as a Detective Superintendent Halliday who is baffled by a series of robberies in which the same type of safe is broken into. What makes the film so good is the way you watch the detectives unravel the mystery and you really don't see the ways things are developing. Solid screenplay with solid acting and way better than film making today. You sit enjoy and be entertained. No wokeness, no virtue signalling, no agendas, just what a film should be solid entertainment, nothing more, nothing less.
A serious lost art....

I need to give this one another go at some point... took me 2 days to get half way through, until I eventually gave up with it.

Then again, I'm apparently not a big fan of mafia movies, since I also found The Godfather to be incredibly overrated. :muted:

Same here mate, it took me about 4 attempts to finally get through Godfather. That damn wedding scene goes on forever! lol. I must admit once I did get through it I thought it was alright but a little too slow for my tastes. Casino and Goodfellas are in an entirely different league IMO. Both more exciting and intense than the Godfather for me.
I still need to watch the Irishman!:)

BLASPHEMY!!!
OMG I can’t believe what I’m reading. Imho there is no other gangster movie that holds a candle to The Godfather. That’s like comparing the movie Young Guns to what Billy the Kid was like, it’s like oil to water... it don’t mix.

It’s always controversial when someone says they don’t like the Godfather! lol! I must admit I thought it was good but nowhere near as good as everyone makes it out to be. I know it has a lot of people who love it and it has definatly been copied multiple times in past films so I can appreciate it’s an influential film. It’s just nowhere near my top gangster movie.:)
