Panasonic region-free

I have the Panasonic BD-55 and the trick mentioned above to make the player region free does work on this unit, but only on certain discs. I was able to play the region B blu-rays for Silent Running and Rolling Thunder, but no luck with Super, Devil's Double, and The Artist. So thanks for the tip, it helps play some discs I ordinarily would need to replace with R1 versions, except in the case of Rolling Thunder and Silent Running there are no R1 versions available on blu-ray.

Just a quick question for everyone who has bought the refurbished Insignia RF-NS-WBRDVD2 . Did it arrive in the original green box as shown in the OP or a plain white box (without any kind of markings and a bar-code sticker at the side)?

Plain white box for me as I believe it is a refurbished model (no brainer for me at under $40 and free shipping).

This is strange. My region B version of Devils Double will not play on my Oppo93. Also, my region B Akira used to work but when I updated the FW it now doesn't work. Anyone else with an Oppo have these same issues with these discs? i want to see DD soo bad too! :ohno:

Did you remove the hardware mod chip in the back before you performed the firmware update? You do use a hardware mod chip don't you? You also need to remove the power cable before you remove or replace the mod chip. Next try performing these:

It should be automatically region free. But to set the Blu-ray region to A, B or C, please do the following:

- Turn on the player without any disc inserted. After awhile, the screen with show "NO DISC".
- About 2 seconds after the "NO DISC" is displayed, press DIMMER, DIMMER, DIMMER, MUTE and then the region code.
1 for Zone A
2 for Zone B
3 for Zone C.
- Power off your player. When started up again, the region code has changed.

The region code selection must be done within 20 seconds.
You player's firmware must be the BDP9x-42-0323 release or newer.

I hope that helped.

Does anyone know if the cheap refurb. insignia one can play 1080i/50?? I have two BBC blu ray sets that are coded for that and although they are both region free my PS3 cannot play them because of the 50HZ issue. Also if the insignia one cant play that format what are some players that can and are also region free???

Another vote for the Seiki BD660. My Vision Quest died on me after 3 years so I went out on got this one off E-Bay ($124 cdn). Wasn't willing to drop $500+ for the Oppo just yet. Right of the bat it worked like a charm. You just enter the unhack code 8520 and you change it to Region B in the set up menu and the best part is you can actually see it so no need to do it 10 times until it works.

Last night I was finally able to watch my my UK version of Spinal Tap . I bought it 2 years ago but it wouldn't play in my VQ. That alone makes it a great investment :)

Cheers!

Hey guys, I got mine today and tried the hack which worked and i turned my player to region B. I then proceeded to try and play a BD but when i put the disc into the player and it plays all i get is a blank screen. I then tried a DVD and a region free BD as well to the same effect. This is weird considering that the initial screen shows when doing the hack.

Sometimes it does that, then I usually turn it off and do it all over again. Its done it twice I think.
Also check on your video settings, maybe you gotta change a setting?

tried this but no go. I updated the firmware to see if it would make a difference and it now plays flawlessly. However, i now cannot use the hack.

Try downloading the hack again onto the hard drive and then onto the USB. I had trouble with mine cause I downloaded directly yo the USB and it didn't work. Hard drive then to USB, hopefully that help. Also go to that website I sent over thru PM and download the firmware from there.

I finally got it. I had to not only downgrade the player to factory, but then use the firmware listed here: http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=190357
to upgrade then input the hack. It played everything i threw at it this time, so i dont know what its problem was. FYI i can confirm that not only is the player a region free blu ray player but it also converts 50hz to 60hz (for blu-ray's from the UK).
