Interesting. I wonder if option 2 is getting subconsciously linked with the Japanese flag by anyone else - Something felt 'right' about it, and it's only just hit me.

By the by, one of the greatest films ever maded. Ever.

EDIT: read threads before posting, fool!

Option 2 for me but with japanese writing on the red area. Also background of second image reminds me of a Japanese flag which in this case would fit Idel because it is a Japanese movie.

Number 2 for me just edges it. The red and grey just looks right. I would be happy with either to be honest along as the film is released in a steelbook.

both are fab, i've gone for 1 as the idea of an all black steelbook sounds so cool, the only other ones i can think of that i have are repo man and apocalypse now, and i LOVE both of those!

The silver, red and black is a beautiful combination.

Image 2 but would also like to have the writing in the sun ;)

I think it would be great to have the English title replaced by the Japanese title in big font vertically in black on the silver background and overlapping about a third into the red circle. And add Kurosawa's name in Japanese in smaller font vertically alongside the title either on its right or left depending on Japanese text convention.

Then add a quarter slip with the English title and director's name in red words black background combination to the bottom of the steel. I am an advocate of always having titles and names in the original language of the film for steelbooks. :)

In any case I think the English words should be stylized to go with the very nice stylized artwork of the red sun, instead of just using normal type-fonts.

Just my humble suggestions. :D

Black for me, but it needs to be glossy for it to look good. Lots of dark steelbooks already, sure, but the ET steel is a good example of grey steels simply looking unfinished or lacking.

I voted for the second one, because I like the idea of emphasizing the metallic side of the steelbook. Yet, with the original title in Japanese ideograms, it could have been even better and more authentic.
