Thanks for the tag @Apollon I've been eagerly awaiting an update on this release.

The problem for me now is which version to get? I'm not in the habit of double dipping unless the Steelbooks themselves are different. However, in this particular instance, I really like both slips and, at the moment, I really can't make up my mind as to which one I prefer. A potential forthcoming release from PA makes the decision even more problematic. As one famous wit so aptly put it, "I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure".

They're not forced on Sicario though: you have French subtitles on or off, you choose.

And besides one big scene towards the end, the content of the film's dialogue in terms of Spanish being spoken has been greatly exagerated imo. Before watching the film I expected something like a 60/40 English-Spanish ratio given some of the talk here, turns out it's about 92/8 (and like I said, besides one big scene, the Spanish parts aren't difficult to understand OR necessary to get what they're talking about - ie.: two cops in front of a map talking in Spanish )

Anyway I delved into that matter a couple of months ago in the appropriate thread:

I got my Blu-ray and watched the film: there aren't English subtitles available for the Spanish portions of the film . You only have removable French subs.

That being said, I don't know much Spanish other than a few words and educated guesses, and I understood pretty much all of it.

You have maybe 5% of the film in Spanish, and most of the dialogue is stuff you can figure out without translation — a few precisions without spoilers below:

- Sometimes people say stuff in Spanish but it's repeated/rephrased in English right after.
- A boy asks his father to play football (with the context, and the word 'football' said a couple of times, you get it).
- A couple of agents are pointing at locations on a map and speaking Spanish: does it really matter if you don't exactly know what they're saying? I got the point.
- There's a situation where a guy tells another guy to do something in Spanish, he does it on screen, so even if you didn't guess the dialogue, it's okay.

There are a couple of scenes towards the end where they alternate between English and Spanish, and there's a really cool phrase in Spanish that has no consequence on the comprehension of a key scene, but it is there at a key moment, so it's too bad if you don't understand the phrase (I put the subtitles on that time to know exactly what was said, though again, it wasn't like it was a major plot point or anything).

There are forced subtitles out there, mostly in older Blu-rays, mostly TF1 Vidéo in the French market, but not Metropolitan and not Sicario .

The answer to that question is that it all depends .......

For example, with Kimchi and Nova releases, I'll go for the full slip editions but with Blufans and HDzeta releases, I'll go for the lenticular slip editions.

With FAC releases, I have until now always opted for the numbered full slip editions. So, for the sake of uniformity, I'm inclined to do likewise here. However, I have a marginal preference for the artwork of the lenticular slip and this is the root cause of my current dilemma.

Ideally, my preferred edition would have the front and back artwork of the actual Steelbook reversed, and the artwork of the lenticular slip used instead for the full slip. Since that is not the case, I need to make a choice between the two versions or, if I'm unable to do so, get both.

Fortunately, with no date yet fixed for the commencement of the GB, I have time to ponder my options. To quote Sophocles, "Quick decisions are unsafe decisions".

It'll be interesting to see how they work it out. I believe (and don't quote me on this) that the film itself had hardcoded English for the Spanish - so the regular (English for English) subs would be a product of your blu ray player, and the (English for Spanish) would be hardcoded onto the film itself.

@C.C. 95 The German Blu-ray from Studio Canal also only has optional subtitles in German and none in English.

I think that with so many different distributors worldwide having the rights to this title, it was left to the local distributors in each country to author the disc according to their own needs.

I haven't seen the film yet but I've heard there's a lot of Spanish/Mexican dialogue.

Being a Czech release, is it possible to get confirmation before the GB that it will be English friendly? I mean will there automatically be English subs on screen for the foreign language bits?

@BluSteel2012 It has been suggested that the Spanish dialogue only accounts for about 8% of the total but, even if that estimate is correct, in a 2 hour film that still equates to a not insubstantial 10 minutes. I like to know what is being said on screen and not have to guess. One particular conversation, towards the end of the film, alternates in rapid succession between English and Spanish, and this is a pivotal scene where it really is essential to understand what is being said.

It was posted in this thread a while back that the Czech release would include English subtitles, although no information was provided as to whether these would be hardcoded only for when Spanish is being spoken or optional, which means either having them on for the whole film, even when it is English that is being spoken, or having the hassle of switching them on/off as needed.

However, it now looks as though this release may not actually include English subtitles after all. Although FA's Steelbook listing states that the disc includes subtitles in Czech, English and English for the hard of hearing, their listing for the standard Amaray, released a week ago in the Czech Republic, states that only Czech subtitles are provided.

More ominous is that there is an image of the rear of the Amaray case which clearly shows only Czech subtitles being available on the disc.

It would also appear from the above image that the Dolby Atmos English track, originally stated to be included on the disc, has been replaced by a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track.

It's always possible, of course, that the details provided in the listing for the Amaray are incorrect and that English subtitles are actually provided on the disc, albeit not stated on the back of the case. Another possibility is that the disc has been re-authored to include English subtitles especially for the Steelbook edition, although that doesn't really make sense for a brand new release.

I already have the UK Steelbook and the FAC edition will be a double dip, so the potential absence of English subtitles is of less importance to me than to someone who intends on obtaining it as their sole copy, and with the intention of playing it.

In any event, the issue of whether or not the Czech disc includes English subtitles clearly needs resolving. @Collector03601 Is it possible for such enquiries to be made with FA?

@augustus thank you for info. if that is really the case it's disappointing. only good thing is that PA is releasing this too. and this is one of the rare movies I would douple dip. but I hope in the future FA continues to provide eng subs.
