Well release date moved a week forward... so surely we must be at a point where discs have been authored and can confirm the state of region coding and subtitles?

I can't comment on the region coding, but if this is similar to past releases with multiple languages spoken in the film (Pianist and Rush being the most recent), there will be English subs but it will be an all or nothing deal. So you'll either have English subs on for all of the movie, including the spoken English, or none. Or toggle them on/off as needed and rewind a bit so they activate for that scene but that's hardly ideal.

You're right, but one can argue, why in 2014 does an international movie studio manufacture region-specific discs? Maybe someone has more insight into that because I've got not idea.

Region-coding could also suggest the inevitable worldwide release of the film on Blu-Ray, so sourcing other discs won't be a problem (hopefully).

How are people, specifically steelbook collectors, still region locked in 2014  you have people spending what, $200+ on multiple copies of the exact same movie for a slightly different box, but complain about region coding?

Maybe you spend $200+ on multiple steelbooks but not me & just because I collect steelbooks doesn't mean I have to have a multi region bluray player.

I most certainly don't, I won't even buy a steelbook of a movie I already have except in very rare circumstances. However look at any Kimchi topic with the vast quantities of people buying multiple versions/multiple copies of the SAME one.

All region players start at $80. Complaining about region coding when you're an importer is pretty much a moot point now. Especially when you're paying anywhere between 1.5-4 times as much as a normal release just for a shiny box.

That just seems really silly.. if i'm watching a film with English Audio, why would I want english subtitles all the way through? Are the assuming that everyone who watches is deaf? I could understand their being Korean subtitles all the way through... it wouldn't irritate me AS much.... but still...

English subtitles are not just for the deaf; think of hard-of-hearing or viewers for whom English is not their native language.

For me English subtitles are a lifesaver whenever (English language) dialogue is whispered, mumbled or spoken with a heavy accent.

You may not want English subtitles all the way through, but many do :D

I definitely expect to see English subtitles all the way through from a Korean release which is described as having English subtitles.

When this film eventually gets a UK release, I'd expect to see English subtitles for Korean dialogue when I'm watching that release with subtitles off. Even then I'd expect to get English subtitles all the way through when I explicitly select English subtitles. At least that's how it's been for every Blu-ray film I've ever viewed with English subtitles on.

Yes but many don't! I just don't see why there couldn't be an option to just display english subtitles for non-english parts, as well as having the option to have ALL english subs, if that's what you want.

The same way i'd expect korean subs for all the english-speaking parts, and not for the korean parts, or korean subs all the way through..

Please link me a decent region free BRD player that costs less than a grand.....

I paid like $65.76 for my Insignia NS-WBRDVD2, so it's definitely possible. Like digitalbabe said, check out the thread.

You do have to have one if you want to watch the Blu-rays in those steelbooks! Unless you're collecting just for the packaging, in which case you can definitely afford a region free player. Hell if you collect steelbooks period you can probably afford one.

Sorry but don't tell me what I can & can't afford also ALL of Kimchis exclusives up to now have been region free so you got that wrong.
This is possibly Region A locked so because of that I cancelled & have been refunded by Kimchi.
How do you know how much income I have or how many Steelbooks I buy ?
So no you don't need a region free player to buy "those Steelbooks" as you so arrogantly put it.
I don't buy steelbooks just for the packaging which is why I cancelled this order.

Wow, we're just trying to help you. Don't be so defensive :naughty:

wish we would get proper confimation on the region so I can decide to cancel or not.

saying it will follow suit of prior releases was no help as some have been locked and others not.

While it's always a good idea to be cautious about region coding when it hasn't been confirmed (as it ultimately depends on the media company/distributor), each shipped KimchiDVD exclusive steelbook release has been region-free

That verifiably includes Rush, but not Infernal Affairs - not yet at hand (but even Infernal Affairs region code is spacified as "all" on KimchiDVD product pages).

the fact the Snowpiercer still says region A is probably why people (including myself) are still highly concerned.

I dont fancy footing the shipping cost to return this if it IS region locked.

True, there is that. And while the previous KimchiDVD exclusives have been region-free, I don't think that any of them were published by Art Serve (the media company for Snowpiercer).

Of course, but I don't think that you'll have any problems finding somebody, e.g., at HDN, who'll be happy to take it off your hands and cover your costs :)

WOWZA!
He was merely giving you a suggestion. Such hostility.

I was going to pre-order this, but I will wait to see what people say about the subtitles. I wouldn't want english subs all the way through, but I'd obviously want them for the Korean parts. If the subtitles for the english spoken parts cannot be turned off I guess I'll wait for NA release.
