Completely agree with this.

Why reprint 8000 of the original and then release an alternative one?

Why not just release an alternative one and preserve the Play.com original?

Smells and feels like lets milk them for all we got to me.

Why do I get the feeling like the UK steelbook market is going to end up like Amazon Germany?

Agree 100%

Hobbit is having tons of diff art and many folks are mostly pleased. Zavvi did not start the push for the reprint as again its trade wide .. more Countries will get it. They will have limited qty of the bigger picture aka run.

Was just about to post exactly the same thing! Im sure most people unhappy with this have pre ordered more than one of the French Hobbits (particularly the Gollum one as there are less being made) and were over the moon about them - but as they dont prosper from this re release theyre up in arms ;) cry me a river...

I welcome any steelbook whether I personally want it or not.

The industry needs to do something to help the home entertainment market and it seems that steelbooks are a selling point. Time and again we hear of people buying titles they don't even want because it comes in a funky box. That's great, it's supporting physical media.

I don't even think of steelbooks as special, or collectable as (apart from one title) all my Blu-rays are in steelbook so to me it's standard. I also want all my favourite films to get the steelbook treatment but don't want to pay more than the retail price on the secondary market.

I didn't get Star Trek when it first came out, so to get one now is great news. I hope it doesn't end up being a reprint (which I don't think the white one will be exactly) as I hate the blue banner on any title. It also doesn't bother me if the Ebay market bombs as I only want what I want.

If someone collects something because it''s rare or valuable, I can understand that but that's not what I do. If people feel aggrieved, it's a shame, but this is a businesss model designed to make profit for companies (something hard to do in the current climate), not appease what is essentially a very small and niche market.

Sure, if each design was different, then orginal pressings would still be as limited as they always were. But I think collectors should only buy what they want and pay what they feel comfortable paying. Again, each to their own of course.

So basically you don't care because it doesn't affect you? People need to be less selfish and respect other people's way of collecting. There are people who have been collecting for over five years who basically built this hobby and those are the people that these re-releases tick off. I don't mind re-releases as it usually means a better Steelbook (as seen with Paramount Play.com exclusives). Reprints on the other hand are a big letdown. Who wants to see near enough the same Steelbook but with an inferior quality and finish?

But it goes both ways.

Collectors too need to be less selfish and accept that reprints allow newer collectors often like to get hold of titles that unfortunately they couldn't first time around even if that does devalue a rare title in the prosess.

Of course, new steelbook designs of previously released titles shouldn't bother anyone and IMO is the right way forward. For example, I want a Star Trek steelbook, if doesn't have to be the Star Trek steelbook whichever one that might be.

I do have some rare collectables (Bowen statues etc.) but I own them because I love them. Not because there's only 1000 or because they've shot up in price since I bought them. It wouldn't bother me in the slightest if they all got remoulded and released because they'll still look the same sitting on my shelf and that's why I bought them in the first place.

While of course, it's probably nice to be the proud owner of something rare, it isn't the be all and end all of collecting. Steelbooks, like any other product are there to make money, if it allso pleases collectors then that's an added bonus. What we musn't do it take it as a personal attack if the item we've spent years and a lot of money obtaining suddenly comes back in print.

That's why studios should stick to re-releases with new artwork and not just copy old designs. It keeps everyone happy (well nearly everyone).

I alway thought I did not care about artwork of re-releases being exactly the same as the original release. I did not hunt for the Canadian I Am Legend because I didn't like the use of the toxic-logo and thought that the front should have Will Smith on it, who carries the whole movie.
More than often I got rid of my old Steels when I find the artwork of a newer release more beautiful (Dutch Dark Knight vs. Japanese Dark Knight or Play's new release of Fight Club vs. Amazon.de's original release).
But I must admit that I held my breath when I heard Play was re-releasing Iron Man. Not because I held on to my Future Shop copy hoping I could one day sell it for $1000, but just because I would then know my collection would have one piece de resistance less. So for me, it's a bit of both. Yes, I'm glad if a Steelbook I missed out on gets a re-release, but I hope my Moulin Rouge! IronPack will stay a one-time release :naughty: It makes me more proud of my collection.

With the news that there's going to be 8K of the reprint and now a new version I have this picture of the ebay scalpers crying their eyes out because there's plenty of new Star trek steelbooks to go around

they should only release this new (alternate) one...np with re-release but pls never use the same artwork twice...

Is this assumption correct?

Steelbook collectors who missed out on the first release of Star Trek don't mind new artwork on the new release as long as it is equally cool (taking 'apples and oranges' into consideration).

Steelbook collectors who already own the first release would rather see new artwork (collectible value won't drop, barring any financial motivations).

Steelbook collectors or fans of the corresponding film would even consider double dipping if the new artwork is superior to that of the first release (I know I would).

Companies should therefor always try to 'improve'/'renew' their artwork with every (re-)release, for their business' and our collector's sake!

I'm really glad about this - after all now I've got a choice of the old design or a new design (hopefully) I may even get both if I like them.
