Old Updates & infos:
NEW UPDATE 8/13/2013:
We have a short update on the finish details for our 2 exclusive Star Trek Into Darkness steelbooks. Both the steelbook in the Villain Edition and the Hero Edition steelbook will have debossed title treatments and be matte finishes. We had some fantastic ideas for the ***8220;special packaging***8221; we promised for the Hero Edition, but unfortunately the time constraints of turning this around in just over a month before the release date meant that none of them were possible. The Entertainment Store exclusive sticker that has been on our previous releases will be on these releases too, and we can only apologise for being able to make the Hero Edition special rather than extra special.

All is not lost though ***8211; some of the special packaging we had planned for Star Trek Into Darkness will be present on our next release, which we will be announcing exclusively via HDN on Tuesday 20th August. You won***8217;t be disappointed, I promise!

PREVIOUS UPDATE:
A stunning 2D and 3D blu-ray plus digital copy steelbook. Limited to 4,000 copies and available exclusively from The Entertainment Store. Finish, embossing, release date and pricing TBC, but we have really special plans for the packaging.

Original infos:From our friends at Entertainment Store in the UK:
The Entertainment Store Boldly goes where other E-tailers cannot

The fastest growing Entertainment E-tailer on the Marketplace, The Entertainment Store, continues its strong exclusive packaging offering in September 2013 with the introduction of 2 2D and 3D Blu Ray Steelbooks for Star Trek: Into Darkness Home Entertainment release.

The limited edition Steelbooks are limited to 4,000 copies each, and will be available to Pre-order from The Entertainment Store on Play.com from midday Friday July 19th 2013.

Since its arrival in March 2013 The Entertainment Store has been working closely with Paramount Home Entertainment and have already teamed up to bring us exclusive Blu Ray SKUs such as GI Joe and Hansel and Gretel but this latest batch of releases look to be the most interesting yet. The E-tailer distributes product directly from the Studio warehouses so the product is guaranteed as authentic and of the highest quality.

Wow, cool to see ES tackle two editions of the film.
And great news 3D is bundled in as well!
Bit disappointed HMV aren't getting this after all, wanted to handpick my copy.

I like this artwork most I think, hope these ES ones aren't too expensive though - they have a track record of being very expensive but their recent amaray pre-orders have been very cheap (£12.50 where on Amazon/Sainsbury's they're £14+). 4000 of each means there'll be enough to go around too! I hope HMV don't announce one too or it'll get complicated. At least if they do, please can they announce it soon? I wanna figure out which one to get! Not that fussed for 3D so for me it's more design and cost-based.

I received a email from HMV and they not gonna do steelbook release fot this movie.

is this the first time there has been 2 releases in the same country, one being exclusive, one not? I ask because there was quite the discussion/speculation in another thread a while back about if a retailer in the UK gets exclusive rights to a steelbook, then another retailer in the UK would not be able to distribute a different steelbook of the same movie.

I suppose this news (combined with the general UK version) squashes that idea.

It depends on what the studio is willing to do. So let's say you are a retailer, and you want to be the only one that gets a steelbook.

So the studio says to you, we want to print 12,000 copies (for example). And you say, OK, no probs - you get the steelbook.

But (all hypothetical), you can take only 8,000 copies, as in the ES store folks, then Paramount says, we reserve the right to sell this steelbook to other retailers with different artwork and what not.

It's not like the ES art is going to show up at amazon, so in that case it really is exclusive - no other retailer will get that variant, but could still get a steelbook.

Hope that makes sense.

Good. I bet they'll get a slipcover at least though, either them or Sainsbury's. To be fair, if Sainsbury's got one of their 2-Disc exclusive slipcovers (like Rust & Bone or Life of Pi) I might even go with them if they're a little cheaper, for the sake of some special features (the 3-disc Star Trek amaray is a nightmare to get hold of so I just opted for the Zavvi exclusive steelbook when it was on the IWOOT eBay store for just under a tenner), but if HMV get it I won't be that fussed (they need to get their website back up...and that's coming from someone who's worked in the store)!

You've got to remember Paramount probably realised this, so the 3D steelbook is more of a niche thing (collector's seem to love their 3D) in terms of steelbooks - the masses don't mind just an amaray (generally speaking). My point is, they're actually unique releases - one is just the 2D version of the film (probably a large print), the other more limited (8000) release is 2D+3D. Amazon will just sell the regular 2D+3D amaray they already have up for pre-order if 'the masses' want a 3D copy of the film but aren't that fussed about the packaging.

Hmm I think I like the art for this edition best, though amazons is pretty good too.
Since ES are doing a villain edition with a scale model of a ship, I wonder if this will come with a replica phaser like the French are getting.

For further clarifciation - in terms of artwork, Scanavo treats each steelbook as a unique run - and each required a minimum of 4,000 copies printed.

So you couldn't print 2,000 copies of Steelbook A with 3D disc and 2,000 of Steelbook B with 3D disc.

Just FYI.

Having not seen the film yet is the front cover a spoiler in anyway? Part of me doesn't want to know the answer to my question.

Will prob pick up the Amazon steel as I'm guessing it will be cheaper and personally couldn't care less about the 3D. Shame as I think the art work on this is the best for the UK so far.
