I don't get the hate for the 2k runs- these are collector items and zavvi aren't exactly the only ones doing it.

They make too many they're flooding the market, make too few and they're making it elitist or something lol

i just think it's unfair for those who are not on HDN all the time and only get to be on every now and again,if you are that desperate for low print runs buy blufans or whatever. it's not something i worry about

There is no way play.com were selling thousands of blu-rays at start price at a loss.

Often times you can buy Alien 1-4 or Die Hard 1-4 boxset for £10. That's £2.50 a disc, and that's not including the amaray and boxset that those come in. So Zavvi's charging at least £12.50 more than the disc must be worth at the present time.

White House Down steelbook is now £15.27 on Amazon... That's 27p more than the amaray. It's 28p more than what Zavvi charge for an old film. Zavvi could easily lower the prices from £15 for old films.

Yes there is. Loss leader. You obviously are young and have no idea about the retail channels and how they use media as a loss leader. All the evidence is out there already.

Lets just agree to disagree.

i think it's pretty unfair to judge someone based on how old they are, there are people much older then me who are far more immature and know a lot less.

Folks, a reminder to keep posts in the main SteelBook thread focused on the announced title. There are members subscribed to these threads to monitor the release and news on the SteelBook.

Please make retailer and quantity runs in their respective subforums. Thank you for your participation and cooperation.

Amazon is the only healthy company that sells them. They are actually a sustainable business model. HMV, Play, Zavvi not in great health.

Zavvi do send email alerts out- I actually hadn't read about this on HDN at all before I got the email... admittedly they mess up sometimes- pain and gain had already sold out before most people got the email I believe.

I was purely commenting that limited print runs aren't bad per se and the hate seems to be for zavvi only when other retailers do it as well.

incorrect, i have defended zavvi many a time. i would react the same if anyone did this. but since zavvi are (to me) the main steelbook retailer right now then yeah, with ES it is different because they dont do SB as regularly as zavvi do

Personally, i didnt rate the film highly enough to buy.
I only buy movies on Steel, i actually like and want to own. Regardless of print run!

Same here mate, I only buy films I like, I open my steels and watch the movie. I certainly do not buy to make money and the size of the run does not bother me, just saying that it makes business sense to do these runs.

I was talking in general not yourself personally.
They are you're right but it's not like they're doing it for every release. They're New steels for older releases so are more niche then a steel version of a new release.

As someone already mentioned I think it's quite exciting waiting for something to go live for pre-order.

@ chipvideo

last week's UK retail performance (as reported buy uk media) during x-mas holiday period showed strong sales for both ultra high-roller retailers and ultra low "poundland" type retailers respectively.

Those who performed poorly were the retailers positioned towards the middle of the market - the british middle class - which ofc is to be expected considering its the middle class who are currently gerttin r@ped by the "pincer movement" of stagnant wages and rising inflation (the poor have always been dirt poor, while the rich will always get richer.)

Your point about "loss leader" (true or not) is irrelevant because currently low, cheap "pile em high" type retailing is the only viable growth area for many UK retailers in this current government climate of "lets engender a bulshit "recovery" in time for the election". :movie:

Amazon UK can offer low prices because they channel all their business through a Luxembourg based holding company which allows them to (legally) claim they make no profits in the UK, and thus avoid paying UK corporation tax. Play and Zavvi were both based in the Channel Islands to take advantage of another tax loophole that allowed them to avoid charging VAT (UK sales tax) on items costing under £18 (later reduced to £15). The UK government changed the law to prevent this happening, so Zavvi now have to charge 20% VAT on all items. This makes a £14.99 Zavvi steelbook equivalent to a £10.99 Play steelbook.

Wreck has stated in the past that Play made very little profit on steelbooks that they sold, so it is likely that Zavvi make very little profit on any steelbooks that they sell for under £15.
