Hey guys, if you think this pricing strategy will continue with low print run and in demand titles, you need to rethink that assumption.

Steelbooks are marketed (the ones with low print runs and no reprints) to sell out within days of a release or even as a pre-order.

That's why we are typically paying a higher price (as well as to own something really cool).

So let's take this as it is. Zavvi is admitting their mistake with JB and very likely LM by creating a sale price on these titles.

Remember the golden rule. Retailers sell the most copies of any new release within 4 weeks of it's release date.

Catalog titles or re-issues are harder to sell, typically.

Let's keep this discussion productive and out of the danger (of being locked) zone please.

They're admitting their mistake by effectively ****ing over all the customers that were loyal and pre-ordered this title? Great.

glass half empty ..... glass half full ... as im sure all the customers who dont own JB are happy. :p

JB is a great movie, im glad I got a steel for it. Who knows maybe by next year Disney USA will get their act together and release it in steel again anyways.

so I think we're getting a bit too mad here....

Snoo-prices change every day, and 99% of the time, no one has any idea that a price drop is coming, so things get ordered at full price. Retailers reduce prices all the time to reduce stock, or to get consumers to adopt new tech, or whatever. After items sell at full price, they often go on sale, and then people naturally say 'but I paid full price'. Buying anything is always a risk, because the market and demand will cause pricing and availability to fluctuate. Unfortunately, there's nothing anyone can do except to decide for themselves when the right time is to order. Most retailers never say anything in regards to what stock is left, or whatever-you order because you want the item, and when it's gone it's gone. I am not sure a store has any other option if they wish to clear stock, but to reduce the price, and add it to promotions-it's been the same pattern for decades.

Yes but this kind of thing has never really happened with Steelbooks, at least not in such a short space of time. It may seem like an overreaction, but I feel that collectors are being screwed by retailers now more than ever. When was the last time you saw a Steelbook reduced by more than 50% within weeks of it first being released before Zavvi came along? Never. How long before Iron Man 3 and The Little Mermaid are half price? Not long I bet.

In any case I just cancelled over £100 worth of remaining orders. I now only have Beverly Hills Cop, City of God, Pain & Gain, Team America: World Police, Toy Story and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen left on order. Considering I had hundreds of pounds of pre-orders a couple of months back and was one of Zavvi's most vocal supporters, they have done really well to manage that.

Been holding off getting this for the longest time. Considering this but I honestly am not interested in Toy Story Zavvi at all. Decisions decisions. Being very frugal since I decided to get new releases mostly due to what I considered an overcrowding of the market. Then again I have seen this coming for a while with the amount of releases they had this yr. Instead of keeping collectors interested, they flooded the market with steels. I still think unlike most that more steels is not good for the overall health of collecting.

Can everyone take a chill pill.....we are talking about steelbooks here.....far more poignant issues in this world other than the unfortunate but not surprising price drops for retails products...its always been happening and will continue. No need to vent anger at Zavvi.....they are a business and have redeemed themselves as a great retailer for our addiction of steelbooks and i for one support them in their decisoon making whether i like it or not...they are a business first and follow a marketing structure we must not forget without which we will not have these steelbooks to own let alone argue/discuss about.

Let us all put this to bed now and support our retailers whom provide us with a great service for the best part.

Anything I EVER bought from amazon.de for a group buy (when we still did those for the flat 14 euro shipping) or personal use.

I feel your pain buddy, but this has happened before to me many times. Maybe just not as close to home for you before. :(

Yeah, I remember buying lots of stuff from Amazon.de than seeing a big drop in price not too long after. Just cause it hasn't happened recently, doesn't mean it hasn't happened before.

I ordered all my Pixar steels from .de and they fluctuated in price almost every hour. One minute a steel was €23, an hour later I ordered it for €10.

It is a shame that it was only about 2 months ago JB was released and now has this offer, but that's the way retailers work unfortunately/fortunately for the public.

Do any of you buy an LED TV for example for £800.00, then when it goes to £450.00, do you complain about that also?

Things reduce in price. You just happened to buy it when it first came out. If a company have too much stock of something, they aren't going to just keep it at the high price to keep initial buyers happy. They will do what they can to get rid of them.

You see many limited edition TVs do you?

Comparing Zavvi lying about limited this was, to a sale on a mass produced appliance, is laughable.

They should never have allowed a print run high enough to require a fire sale. Or if the print run was high, they should not have charged £23.

But they did. They lied about how limited it was to con people into buying it, and got greedy. I'm glad it's biting them in the arse now.

Money's been tight lately and I really wanted to collect all the Disney steelbooks but had to cancel this and little mermaid. Very happy to get it for this price but can understand why some people are getting miffed at this, especially if they bought it off ebay EEK!

I buy steels to movies I enjoy and actually like the art to, and that's it. I sort of grew out of the phase where having "limited" anything inflated my ego... That being said, I'm passing on this for $17 as well.

As for investments, it's been said plenty around on here before, but if you want to invest in something actually valuable, invest in gold

fyi the print run was publicized on several social media outlets by zavvi themselves.

From what I can tell they are hoping to reduce runs going forward, and after experiencing the ins and outs of their first venture into Steelbooks a lot has been learned. It appears that better decisions could have been made....but the same can be said when Media Markt released some pretty cheap Steels in waves that then sat on shelves and were clearanced pretty quickly. And then later they appeared at Amazon...same song all day long. With no embossing and some quicky art. Steels for under 7 EUR. Futureshop has also blown out Steelbooks for dirt cheap, as has Best Buy and several international retailers.

Studios have the ultimate say in the min qty that a retailer has to buy if an exclusive is to be secured, and can dictate cost to an extent.

As many have said before Disney has always set prices high...because given the following the titles carry...they can. People pay $20-35 on launch for a regular Blu-ray. The USA Disney Steelbooks launched at $34.99 years ago in the USA. In this situation, it appears they are trying to clear some stock, and offering it as a discount. So, for anyone that missed it it's still a good deal. If you purchased it at full price, then you were part of what happens every day-products become available and you either buy or not. And then if there are leftovers the price drops.

But honestly there have been Steelbooks released with higher quantities than this, and those too were sometimes put on clearance.

I think it's been a long time that I have seen this much negativity over a price DROP.

For Zavvi's sake and the ongoing excitement and uniqueness that 'limitations' provide, I hope they and other retailers are able to keep quantities lower-but if they can't, then once again it is simply up to the individual of whether they want to add it to their collection or not.

As said many times before, lets not let discussions turn into personal attacks and accusations. Feel free to express your opinion, but please follow the simple rules of decorum we ask at HDN. At the end of the day we're talking about a movie and a price drop.

The staff wouldn't be camping this thread working damage control if this was as simple as something dropping in price.

Comparing this to cheap, German steelbooks that often have multiple print runs getting reduced is extremely disingenuous. This was a title that at one point, they declared to be sold out. It's a catalogue title, that was sold at a price 20-30% higher than a brand new release steelbook would normally be sold for, on the basis that it was a limited worldwide exclusive classic Disney title.

And now it's just some trash Zavvi need rid of. Zavvi have burnt a lot of good will today, and it's not like they were a popular company to start with.
