Edit-digitalbabe-it has been confirmed by our industry contacts that these are not Steelbooks(TM), Iron Packs(TM) or Metal Paks(TM).

At the direct request of the company that has manufactured the new packaging, please do not contact them directly, as they have again stated that they will not provide further product details to consumers, given their confidentiality agreements with their clients.

******To discuss individual releases, please see the threads for each release.******

A note from Wreck, Site Developer:
First and foremost, I would like to remind everyone that the reason why IronPack is no longer being sold is due to them infringing on trademark rights held by G&M/Scanavo for the SteelBook product.

This new metal packaging that everyone is talking about, and is listed on the FutureShop pre-orders is shown below.

I am making this post to inform you all, so you can make up your purchasing decision on your own. Some other Countries are releasing some of these in SteelBooks so if that is what you prefer just get with one of the mods or search the SteelBook forum to find the steelbooks for those titles.

Running a community site for blu-ray collectors and then also running bluraysteelbooks.com can sometimes put me in a tight situation. We try to cover all collectible packaging because it will get posted by our members regardless, and we like to keep the forums tidy.

On the other hand, the same way IronPack got shut down, this new packaging might and probably will get shut down to. It looks pretty close to the same.

So make up your own mind on this product, as I presume each person will. I myself am a steelbook fan through and through. But we have staff members and members here who dont care so long as its metal. I apologize in advance to you members if it feels like I take sides, but just remember ... I'm a collector just like your first, and webmaster second. So sometimes my feelings get the better of me. :p

It will be interesting none the less to see whether this package is a rip off, quality made, or an outright inferior product. Time will tell.

Until then, based on all my findings and HEARD here first ... here is what I have gathered to be the product. There is a regular version, and slim version case. They do embossing and things of that nature too. One of their marketers is that of the same company who deals with what we call the Blu-ray Steel Cases. IE. The blu-ray metal slip covers from Australia. It looks as if VIVA is the parent company of Brackley Industries or just that Brackley markets for them "down under".

It's called a Blu-ray Metal Box

Below is a standard inside shot of their spindles.

Example of their "Slim" box. They also have other solutions.

Hi All-if anyone else needs help-I had posted a group buy weeks before we had any info here. Just communicate via PM or in the thread, if you wish to be included. Thanks.

I bet when they released they will just say disney collectable packaging like the other ironpack released last year i am looking forward to these now.

I'm not a fan of The Lion King, same art on both front and back and felt inferior.

Disney Collectable Case

I spotted a Collectable case of the Lion King last month at Best Buy, then they also released Cars 2 & Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides at Best Buy as well.

If Pre-ordered for $7.50 (empty), these cases are basically free when you save your receipt. Not sure if this is what Disney is doing from now on, but if so....they did a great job. All so far have been embossed.

So, onto my initial question for this day. What is this called? Collectable case can mean anything and this is very close to Blu-ray steelbook or ironpack. Not even sure what these are made out of either. It is unique enough though and I like the look very much. These deserve a name IMHO.

edit: I found the name of these. Disney Collectible Case (Metal Box). At this site, they mention that these are only Future Shop exclusives, but since I picked up 3 of these when passing by at BB, I imagine BB isn't even keeping score. No search let me find any of these metal boxes.

As for the finale in October, Disney is also release these metal boxes: Bambi & The Incredibles. Here's the link I found:

Only a couple are exclusive to FutureShop the rest will be seen in USA too. They are called metal box. I edited your link out only because we are the original source to all the information in regards to Metal Boxes. These infringe on patents held by Steelbook so I dont for see these being around next year.

ps. You can find more info on all these releases in the IronPack, MetalPak and Metal Box forum.

I won't mind this NEW thing whatever it's called as long as it's g2 size and durable. I don't want some cheap tinfoil crap that folds like toilet paper :D

Viva is not a new thing, infact they are one of the pioneer of compact media metal/steel packaging in USA with DUNE (DVD)

one interesting fact is they say they can do a lenticular front for 3d blu-rays. Tho I guess really any metal packaging could kind of like the Iron Man 2 Target Exclusive MetalPak

Not to confuse - It was Keysolutions Star Metalpak who can do lenticular front design to its metal packaging

I don't know. I love steelbooks better, but I like this better than ironpacks. I even picked up TLK from yesasia. Kinda pricey, but I like to see different things.

On a separate note, I heard Best Buy and Futureshop are owned by the same people. Why on earth wouldn't they just release steelbooks, instead of making them exclusives all the time? That and have them both sell on their respective Amazon sites. I can get to Futureshop easy enough, but I'd rather order them online & have them arrive. I feel like the house that cannot receive cable, just because my property line is not in range, LOL.

Yeah, just because Best Buy owns Future Shop in Canada, they run as separate businesses. We've heard from the product buyers or other officials at Future Shop in the past that sometimes they have no idea what Best Buy corporate is working on and all that.

So, it's just part of the business model they've put together - to be honest, we're quite lucky to get anyone at Future Shop to interact with steelbook fans - nary a peep comes out of Best Buy at all.

In addition, it's part of the attraction to get into the store - you want to get that new steelbook release and while you're in there, you get a CD or whatever too. It makes more sense to make a store exclusive to get the traffic into the store.

Hope that helps. :)

I don't like them to be honest, they look and feel cheaply made. I've seen some videos of hardcore steelbook fans on youtube and they all agree: the quality is not there, so to me it's a no-go.
Steel all the way!

after seeing the bestbuy Pirates of the Caribbean 4, i'm sold on this one !
great embossed artwork on front and all artwork at the back.

the build quality on this one is solid !
