I would presume a 3d film with so much CG would fill a Blu-Ray and there'd be no room for a 2d version. But what do I know. I live in a cave. :)
A Blu-ray 3D disk actually always includes the 2D version, it just often contains additional programming (by the studio/distributor) so that it refuses to play in a 2D player.

One stream is the full 2D video (for one eye) and the other stream is the delta for the other eye. Blu-ray 3D standard was created to enable backwards compatibility with 2D players, so they could simply ignore the delta stream for the other eye.

Sometimes when separate 3D and 2D disks are included in a specific release, the 2D disk has less compression, possibly resulting in better PQ.

Wow. Tough decisions. I do like 3d but do i really only want a version that contains only the 3d disc.

This art is soo much better than the 2d version though. Decisions decisions

3D only is ridiculous! o_O Still going to buy this as well as the 2D one though cos I'm a damn fool and want both artworks! So that'll be near enough £40 for a film which I've not yet seen but got terrible reviews! :banghead:

3D only? That makes literally zero sense. I know it says this was a studio decision, but how hard is it to put a 2D/3D disc in one case? The fact they have another steelbook that is just 2D shows that this is nothing but pure greed.

Frankly there is no point ordering anyway, as most Entertainment Store steels don't sell out anymore (not since Reacher and H&G), heck, they still have GI Joe in stock. So if you are desperate for this (and it is a nice steel, I'll give you that) I'd wait for the inevitable price drop.

I hope this isn't going to become the norm - as I only really get films with the 3D disc as a bonus (I do have a 3D TV but only use it now and then) so if it comes down to it then I'll just shift to 2D only, and it'll possible lead to a slow decline of 3D sales as I suspect a lot of people will do the same. Just my opinion.

If this included both 3D and 2D it would affect the sales of the 2D steelbook, which I'm assuming is not an exclusive, which would impact other retailers. Therefore maybe the studio said 'you can have an exclusive, but only 3D'.

Personally though it isn't great at least we have a choice.

It is not too surprising that Paramount/ES have done this just look at the sales of GI Joe Retaliation and World War Z, they are still trying to shift them.

I am happy to buy both, already got the FS one on order and I love the artwork for this, which ever looks nicest in the hand will make the shelf :)

Saying it makes no sense is a mute point, while I agree it's probably the worse decision I've yet to see in my short steelbook collecting phase, it makes perfect business sense to split the two, give them separate art and capitalise on collectors passion for complete sets. I'm surprised this is the first time it's happened tbh, It's like in the gaming industry when they release a game then hold back vital content as a dlc knowing gamers will bite. It p****d me off with Star Wars Force Unleashed and this is a similar situation, I'm glad it's happened on a steelbook I'm happy passing on. I just hope this isn't the beginning of my exodus from collecting as I really enjoy it, but have limited funds like all of you guys:thumbs:
