This thread is intended for those who haven’t personally come across a damaged steelbook and wondered what they should look out for – especially if trading/selling.

(For a more detailed breakdown on Item Quality you should check out this thread HERE.)

Here is a selection of pictures to show the most general and likely issues you may come across when buying a steelbook:

Paint Chips:
*Tip* Be careful when dealing with your steels as this picture shows, general wear+tear can affect these.

Scratches:

Dents:

Dings:
*Tip* Find a sunny area and tilt the steelbook to the light - this will help show any imperfections that are sometimes hard to see!

Spine Slash:
*Tip* If you gently move the wrapping you'll be able to see if the slash has actually damaged the steel or not!

Banana steelbook:

Tears to wrapping:

Annilnation:
*Note*: this normally happens when people don't pack steelbooks properly / Postman decides to play football with it or the Retailer/Seller sends as it is! :emb:

*Notes*:

1) Not everyone is OCD but it's always good practice when selling/trading to provide pictures of these imperfections
2) Manufacturing problem? To confirm its a manufacturing problem it's always best to check the thread related to the steelbook in question, in this case Lion King TW.
3) Please post your general damaged steel pictures in the seperate thread HERE
4) Loose Discs: *Tip* You can certainly fix the majority of these, read HERE
5) Some retailers are known to send steelbooks with imperfections - such as Amazon.ca - usually hidden behind the J-card/slip
6) Sometimes it's not actually a dent behind the J-card but some GLUE
7) If you have none of these issues its more than likely you have a 'mint' steelbook! Congrats! :D

Feel free to post any related steel issues that i've missed or tips that can be added to the notes section.

Thanks

David

A lot of Steelbooks have this issue, I certainly wouldn't call it a defect.

Well I asked about it in a couple threads and the consensus was it wouldn't be considered "mint" anymore and it would be devalued. :dunno: I would be happy to hear anything on the contrary :D

If you bought that steel from me as mint and found it had this "feature" would you be upset about that? Is it enough that it needs to be disclosed ahead of time?

Enjoyed this thread. Loved the pictures, especially the Willow picture. I wish it could have been bigger.

One small point, I would not consider the series of holes to John Carter to be a defect. Some steels come like that from the manufacturer, I have one and every one I saw at BB had the same holes, so no defect in my eyes if they all come that way. I wasn't expecting it but it turned out to be normal for that title.

Well i would call myself OCD but since the quality seems to decrease with every release, what are the blemishes you guys can live with?

I mean: What steel would you keep and which one would you return in hope to recieve a better one ( i call it the steelbook roulette)

Pictures are welcome ofc ;)

The willow picture is the thing of legends.

I can just imagine the email:

We are really sorry to hear your steelbook was involved in a high speed collision with a truck. We really care about our customers and appeciate your feedback. As a gesture of good will, we will refund your account £2"

Great thread, and some of those pictures are heartbreaking!

It's strange how much some of these bother me but others don't bother me so much. Spine slashes are my worst enemy (probably because that's the area that's on display for me) yet corner dents don't bother me too much. Weird.

Well IMO it isn't a defect and it's not something you would have to mention. I'm OCD about my steelbooks but I just can't see how that is a defect when so many Steelbooks have this.

I would agree with that, the small holes are on a lot of Steelbooks. Any other tears need mentioning though, tears in the shrinkwrap are really annoying for me.

Note to self, don't trade with Naughtius as all his steelbooks are damaged EEK!

Seriously though good idea, I'm not OCD but I wouldn't like to receive a steel with damage seen in most of those pics, unless given prior notice and very cheap :D
