A good article by Charlie Papazian:

So the Packers beat the Steelers, but perhaps more astonishing is the news, that the Obama’s personally bought homebrewing equipment and had their White House chefs brew up a batch of White House Honey Ale. The beer was brewed with honey from the White House bee hives. The story can be read in it’s entirety Obama Foodorama at http://obamafoodorama.blogspot.com/2011/02/president-first-lady-host-whi..., posted by Eddie Gehman Kohan.

When was the last time homebrew was served at Whitehouse Superbowl shindig? Never. Probably as close to it as it gets was in George Washington and Thomas Jefferson’s days. They brewed their own beer, but did it ever get to the Whitehouse? Though no Superbowl then no one knows.

I remember when I first brewed honey ale back in the early 1970s. People thought the idea was absolutely nuts. Professional brewers who knew me thought it was the wackiest thing they ever heard of. All my friends wanted to try something they thought was going to be really weird. It was a winner. My original recipe, still to be found in my book The Complete Joy of Homebrewing, Rocky Racoon’s Honey Lager. Back then honey was added as an impulsive action, after all we did brew in the kitchen and anything within eyesight was fair game. Still is.

Also served during the festivities (according to the Whitehouse food blog at http://obamafoodorama.blogspot.com/2011/02/president-first-lady-host-whi... ), Greenbay craft brewery Hinterland’s Pale Ale, Amber Ale and Luna Stout. Yuengling beer was served to represent Pennsylvannia.

Sounds like a party to go to just for the beer, never mind who was there and what was watched. I would have gladly gone, but wasn’t invited. Maybe next time.
