Pixar Gets Its 12th Number One Debut as Cars 2 Tops the Box Office

Pixar animation already has a record going  with 11 of their debuting films making it to the top of the box office and this record continues with a 12th number one debut as  Disney’s ‘Cars 2’ takes the first position at the box office . Cars 2 has had quite an opening weekend earning a total of $68 million. Till date every Pixar film has managed to top at the box office, starting right from the original Toy Story back in 1995 and up till now the Pixar franchise has managed to earn worldwide revenue of $6.6 billion.

The earnings for the original Cars which had opened in June of 2006 topped at $60.1 million. Since the sequel had the benefit of being featured in 3-D and on IMAX, the ‘Cars 2’ revenue certainly pushed forward and excelled further than its predecessor. The animated film was show cased 150 IMAX screens globally and the $3.25 million earning certainly makes it quite an impressive debut. Thus, there is no doubt that by the end of the weekend ‘Car 2’ will still have quite a powerful finish.

Other films that made their debut at the box office this week include ‘Bad Teacher’, the R-rated comedy from Sony staring Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake. The ‘Green Lantern’ by Warner Bros’ which had topped the box office the previous week has dropped down to the second spot at the Box office, while ‘Super 8’ another Box Office topper is now at the 4th spot.
