Just to put in 2 Cents. @jacobsever, your examples above would be correct if all films used "soft Mattes". The "soft matte" used either on the sides or above and below can be removed. This area is usually referred to as the "TV safe action area". The director uses this 1.85 (or sometimes, but rarely, 2.35) soft matte for his framing. Unfortunately, on television and on early video- the mattes sometimes were removed in transfer. This means the director's framing is all cocked-up. A frequent giveaway is an absurd amount of headroom, and worse, boom microphones above!
This is not the framing the director intended.
What you get wrong on 2.35 widescreen framing is this: most 2.35 frames are anamorphic squeezes. There literally is NOTHING below or above the frame. This why we had the horror of pan & scan in the early days before letterboxing. The only way to fit the image on television was to push in. You cannot put a rectangle into a square. (Or, in the case of 16:9- you cannot put a large rectangle into a smaller rectangle.) They used anamorphic lenses to elongate the frame of view. It can only be seen correctly when the opposite unsqueezing is done to reveal the long horizonal image.
There are some instances of soft matte 2.35 (Michael Mann used to do it. He literally framed for scope with no anamorphic squeeze.)
A good rule is this: 2.35 films are wide with nothing below or above their letterboxes. They are more than twice as long horizonally. Films in 1.85 or 16:9 are most likely soft matted- where removing the Matte will ruin the framing by exposing the parts of the image underneath the "soft matte" that was never meant to be seen.
There is also 1.85 Hard Matte. This is where the director physically puts a matte box on the camera while filming. This means the 1.85 letterbox bands are actually part of the exposed image.
(This is to guarantee that the film is seen as intended). James Cameron used Super35 hard 1.85 matting on The Abyss an Aliens.
The choice for director in aspect ratios is always if they need height or length. Westerns look amazing in widescreen, while a film that takes place mostly in small rooms would probably work better with more vertical wiggle room. The most important thing is that on the discs we get- we are seeing what the director intends and wants us to see....
So I urge anyone to read about anamorphics and scope, and matting techniques. And really, this stuff gets very intricately confusing sometimes. But having lived through the dawn of home video way back when...and all the crappy transfers and resolutions, and pan & scan, etc... Trust me- we have it pretty good now! Peace!:D:thumbs:

@C.C. 95 I want to be your friend now. That was incredibly interesting.

@djjez83 thanks for putting that list together! Pretty pumped to be hovering around #16 for my first live preorder

It could just show the neighborhood you live in.

WOW memories right there @spass EEK! Game was so awesome :notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

At first I thought they did the shots in rain and it will be like a little bit water-repellent, like covered in something like wax or so for a nicer finish and touch.
But the product page quoted: Shine pearl grain coating on full slip case
So my english is not the best but "pearl grain" sounds like something is on top of the paper like pearls and it should be like your Heavy Rain slip ?!
