It sounds Cliche but it has to be the Blair Witch Project it started it all, and has cult following today. I remember when I was a teen and be so obsessed with the Blair Witch website and then the dossier.
Paranormal Activity! As a teenager, I was scared of any horror films (literally even the xmas scrooge films because ghosts haha). But one day my brother and I watched Paranormal Activity to show that we weren’t big babies and oh goddd it changed my life! The adrenaline it gave me… Never felt anything like it before! I didn’t sleep for about 2 days afterwards, too scared I’d see Katie whenever I opened back my eyes. But when I say it changed my life, it did! I became obsessed with horror genre, trying to feel how I did when watching Paranormal Activity. I wrote for horror magazines, became a Hostel fanatic, attended horror conventions and film sets!! All because of Oren Peli’s masterpiece.
The answer is in your article Rob, The Blair Witch Project. When I first saw it I almost pissed my pants;) This is a true classic and I love it. I seem to remember the genius marketing of the movie before it hit the cinemas.
Would absolutely love to own this. Thanks for the giveaway!
Edit: just found this artice which explains the marketing of the film.

Mine is ‘Rec’ the Spanish horror – Its absolutely terrifying, not only is it pitch black throughout the film but the fact you have to read it (subtitled) means you can’t look away. Its got the most scariest …. nope if you haven’t seen it make an effort to – This original Spanish one is far superior to The American remake. Fantastic atmosphere and a truly gripping story.
REC 1 AND 2!!!!! Both amazing films with lots of scares and suspenseful moments!!!
Paranormal Activity (2007), the filmmakers technique is very effective and believable as a found footage film since (wink) TBWP.
“Exists” because Bigfoot.
“Grave Encounters” as it gives a nice slow burn then goes full tilt once the ‘activity’ really kicks in, and nails the ghost hunting tv show phenomena. Has a half decent sequel too.
If I was going to stir up old Blair Witch controversy I’d include “The Last Broadcast” ☺
My personal favorite would have to be “Trollhunter” from 2010, as it really managed to stomp its competitors into the ground by introducing a refreshing new punch to what’s considered a worn out genre. To be fair, once in a while said found footage premise manages to bring forth similar gems, I’d also recommend looking into: “Lake Mungo”, “The Tunnel”, “Creep”, “Found Footage 3D”.
The Visit – makes up for its lack of gore & body count by being really suspenseful, and might also be a sign that M. Night Shyamalan has found his mojo again
Blair witch project, and I’m not just saying that. The marketing for the movie was genius and I remember thinking it was real. It also started the found footage genre of horror movies. Without Blair witch there would be no paranormal activity series or other great found footage movies.
Cannibal Holocaust. The move is deeply upsetting but the score makes the misery even worse. Not a fan of the animal killings. I do love the fact Deodato had to bring people to court to prove it was only a movie and not a snuff film.
The Blair Witch Project will always be my favourite found footage film. It more or less created the genre and none of the found footage films to follow have felt so natural and real as this one! If you didn’t know better you would swear it was real. Plus the marketing for this was pure genius and second to none!
Amazing and thanks for the giveaway and I love found footage horror. Love cloverfield, Blair witch, as above so below, troll hunter but my favourite is paranormal activity
I think Blair Witch helped to really define the genre, and I may be reaching, but I really love Europa Report. It’s a slow burn, but a hell of a payoff at the end.
The Blair Witch Project is not only my favorite found footage movie but my favorite movie period. It is still the scariest movie I have ever seen and I was convinced it was real the first time I saw it.
Amazing giveaway! The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield, REC and Troll Hunter are my favorites..but TBWP opened my eyes to this horror subgenre..
Thank you for this amazing giveaway! Like a lot of people before me, it’s The Blair Witch Project. I was 14 when it was released. We crept into the cinema. We discussed the movie for weeks. It was real to us. We crept into the cinema a second time. And we where sure it was real. Young and naive in 1999. And, the day we went a second time I picked up Eminem’s Debut Album “The Slim Shady LP” 😀 What a great time to remember!
As Above so Below because of the oppressive atmosphere
Paranormal Activity hands down. Watched it with the lights out and the surround cranked, terrifying.
Trullhunter (norwegian movie) – absolutly underrated : Different, weird but Interesting
As Above So Below – Thanks to Filmarena releasing the title I had to watch it and felt claustrophobic while watching scenes around tight crawl spaces. Also thank you for selecting me as the winner.
Cool giveaway! I personally love Cloverfield. I love how the viral marketing was done to promote it, along with the Godzilla take on a monster movie but with found footage. It probably was the first and only found footage movie that i was excited to see.
