I have the G10 series and never had any power supply issues (knock on wood) :D ... in terms of the size I'd go for the 54" with better features, but it also depends on the size of your room. Also, if you're naturally drawn to the LEDs and like the look I'd not discard them and go with what others tell you is better. If that's what looks better to you I think you should get it because you'll be happier that way.

My point before was that brighter does not mean better picture, but it also doesn't mean worse. LEDs today have great picture quality and you also get great savings in terms of energy. Since they are thinner and lighter they are also easier to hang on the wall. I was drawn to the Panasonic at the time because of the THX picture mode, which was a great and easy way for me to calibrate the picture.

So Crash, go with your gut feeling and what you like. I like brighter too and if I had to replace my bedroom (LDC by the way) I would go with an LED. Sorry to send you to square 1 :emb:, but sometimes you go with specs and what you think you should get and then don't feel as happy when it gets home. Going with the LED may also let you get to 58" for a lower price and give you more options.

Oh sure thanks a lot, throw a wrench into everything at the last minute

Just kidding ;)

It is tough for sure. I do like the brightness of the LCD/LED tv's, but I also know that motion blur would drive me frakkin crazy.

As I mentioned before, I am running a 48" 1080i rear projection CRT and while it is not a true HDTV, it has served me well, the colours are great and I do not have motion blur.

I have watched numerous TV and caught the glimpses of motion blur and it sends my opinion of the TV into the gutter.

Even if I am only dropping $2000 on it, I do not want left wanting at the end of the night, wishing for more, hoping for satisfaction, ....... errrrrrr ....... I was talking TV's, really :emb:

In all seriousness, motion blur is a killer for me and do not see the point of buying a new state of the art TV, only to have to contend with that.

Cheers

I believe the newer LCD sets have taken care of the motion blur issue. I know that it was an issue with early LCDs and LEDs, but I believe that todays sets don't suffer from it...or at least it's something that you wouldn't even notice. Has it been an issue with the sets you've seen over lunch?

BTW - are you like walking around TV stores with sandwich in hand or are you just foregoing food altogether to maximize TV review time :p :D

Hey there,

The pursuit of TV is still ongoing as I had to break away from it for Christmas. (I was told to :ohno:)

Thanks for the info regarding the motion blur and the newer LCDs/LEDs. I have seen a few sets that suffer from it but then others that looked very good, although the later may just not have had fast enough motion.

I have found that watching soccer actually is quite good at pcking out the sets that suffer from motion blur.

At first I was foregoing food at lunch, but then I starting going to stores where the staff was/is on commission and found that they will readily give up their lunch to make a possible sale :D

It is a crazy process though as I keep flipping back and fourth between 3-D and no 3-D, and then between plasma, lcd, or led.

Cheers and thanks again for the info

I voted no, and I won't purchase any 3D equipment.

I really think 3D is just a fad without a future in cinemas, and absolutely not usable at home.

Good luck on your ongoing hunt Crash!

Thanks :D

Oh, I don't think its a fad! With all the work Crash is doing, it might be wise to get what he gets.

Oh yeah, sure, put it all on my shoulders. Fair warning though, I bought into HD-DVD about 2 months before it fizzled :(

Based on that, if I buy 3-D, it will disappear before I get my TV properly broken in, but if I do not buy it, 3-D will be here forever

everyone keeps saying 3D is a fad. Sorry to say it isn't. It's the new future of TVs and what TV makers believe can push the market alone with Internet TV. Just having a plain LCD/plasma isn't going to drive the market anymore. That and all the movie studios are on board with a unified 3D format on Blu-ray, this is their push not to just make a quick buck.

I agree with you that 3D is not a fad and is here to stay, in one form or another, and it is which form that concerns me.

Generally new technology reaches a point where it settles for awhile and then after that does not change significantly. With 3D we are at the stage where there is a standard for the current BD 3D films, but companies are already working on TVs that do not require glasses, or at the very least non-powered glasses similar to the theatre. Will the new/updated 3D technology use the same movies and players or will they be different.

My concern lies in the "when to buy" category. I am concerned about buying too soon and then the active glasses technology disappear in short order and I am stuck with another HD-DVD player if you know what I mean. On the other side of it, is buying a non 3D TV and then being out of the technology completely.

Basically, I am right where I was when I started :ohno:, but I have got to look at a lot of cool TVs though :D

The thing with 3D tv's is that they are also the best 2D TVs and you don't need to watch everything in 3D, just use it for 3D movies like you would at a movie theatre. The biggest complaint on 3Dtvs is that I don't want to wear the glasses all the time, and you don't have to. There is a glasses free tech, but I don't think the consumer will see it for 3-4 years as the cost associated with those sets is too high.

I've had a 3D tv for a couple of months and have a lot of the titles that have been released... my biggest problem with the implementation is that most of the time, while I love the 3D concept and the effect, I just don't have the desire to actually watch it IN 3d. It's not a glasses issue it's just the whole... preparation... for it. I can't do it if I'm tired or just feel like enjoying a movie because with the 3D you have to actually be into it and fully vested whereas with some of the movies that are 3D (Shrek films, MvA) they are films that are fine if your just lounging around on the couch but it's hard to want to invest the time and energy required to watch the film in 3D.

That said there are some films that when I finally get my copies of them in 3D I'm going to definitely be prepared (Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, Tron, etc).

I would say 2-3 years until it is properly introduced, remember 1st gen is always the guinea pig :D. It always takes a few revisions to do it right.

Well, I think I have finally found it. While I cannot say that it is the TV of my dreams, I can say that I believe it is a good compromise on all fronts.

I am going to be getting the Samsung PN58C6500

No, it is not a 3D TV, but I just could not justify spending an extra almost $1500 to $2000 (that is for all in with glasses and other goodies) just to get a feature that will only be used on occassion. I already have a PS3 capable of 3D, but I would require 4 pairs of glasses, a new digital tv receiver, a new audio video receiver since mine is only HDMI 1.3 (I know my receiver will do 3D, but the picture will be a 1080i due to the 2 frames sent for the 3D effect and the fact that 1.3 cannot handle both frames in 1080p, and I know myself and this would just not be satisfactory:rolleyes:)

Up here 3D BDs are about $35 to $45 a pop and 3D TV broadcasts are few and far between so the content, and desire to spend that kind of money on media, it just was just not there.

I had actually seen the TV, the 6400 to be honest, on almost the first day I went looking, and always ended up going back to it as the picture was incredible, they have been playing Avatar on it for about 2 months.

I then went to Costco a few days ago and saw the 6500 and watched a bunch of the Prince of Persia on it and was very impressed and was pretty sure that was the one.

I will get it at Costco for a good price and will get 2 years of Costco Concierge Warranty for free. Most competitors were sitting at about $350 for extended warranty and while I know that it would cover "more" I didn't feel it was worth it for the money I will pay for the TV.

Will most like get it this weekend and will update when that occurs.

Cheers and wish me luck

P.S. Using 3D Porn as a selling feature of a 3D TV will not get you anywhere with your spouse EEK!

That's a nice set crash! Enjoy! at least you did your research and came to the conclusion on your own, instead of foolishly jumping in and buying it.

Thanks for the kudos.

It was tough as I really wanted 3D, or at least I thought I did, but when it came right down to it I knew I wanted it just for the sake of having it and nothing more.

Best thing about Costco is that I have 90 days no questions asked so if I do reconsider all is not lost.

Thanks again for all the info and help

I've actually heard of people going to Costco and buying a big screen to watch a big weekend game and returning it the following week - no questions asked! Enjoy your new set. I'm sure it will be great.

I don't know how a 3DTV costs an extra 1500 dollars.. Most places have them on sale with a 3D blu-ray player, 2 glasses, and the TV all for that sale price. You would only need 2 extra glasses at $150 a pop.

There is a Samsung PN58C680 at Best Buy right now for $1899, that's only $100 more than the set you are looking at. (vs Amazon prices)

Either way you are going to get a good set. Enjoy!
