I've been saying all long not to by into the hype that is generated for some of these big releases. Go by what you see, not what you are told. If you're collecting for value, then ebay is an excellent indicator was what is valuable, and what isn't. Myself, I was extremely weary of Play.com's production numbers. IMO, something limited to 4000 copies should never flood ebay, as this tile and a few others have. But in the big picture, this is good news. It means that more people are getting into this hobbie, thus the real rare ones will command a higher price. I don't know why the European titles (especially German) get re released so many times. If you want assurances of your steel being a real exclusive, then I highly recommend Future Shop. I don't ever recall them re releasing any of their exclusives. They have an excellent track record. For the record, I did purchase 3 of these, but it is because I like them. In the next few days, I will post my collection on the picture thread. It should show you that if you're diligent, and pay attention at whats happening out there. You can really build a fantastic collection, without it being re released by somebody else.

They will not be much more special than amaray cases soon...

Yep, it really is getting that way. And while it's great to have some of these movies as steelbooks, it's become pretty obvious that studios have realised that the steelbook format is a cash cow and one that they're going to milk as much as they can. I don't know about you guys but all these re-releases are killing my interest big time.

Absolutely right!!!
I can live with some new artwork or "improved" rereleases BUT not everything, everywhere!

We will have to wait where this is all going to...

I used to have a lot respect for play.com. I dont think im buying more of their "exclusives" because they are obviously lying to us.

Makes me mad, but what can we do..... They only care about the money.

Next time please dont lie to us.

And if theres not going to be anything special about owning a steelbook, at least set them as the same price of the amarays.

1) When I state something is limited to 4k, then I've been told by the horse's mouth. Ebay is no place to speculate qty.

2) FutureShop's are not safe. Book of Eli was a futureshop exclusive and it ended up at Best Buy ...

Play didnt lie to you, nor any of us. Its an exclusive in the UK. They fought for good art and thought it was world-wide exclusive. They feel cheated as well! I've spoken to them and they are saddened by it as well. Your comment is a perfect example why, as people are looking at them when this wasn't their fault. They're not happy either, and that's a good thing as they are working with us more in trying to combat this.

That's great news. It's good to hear that Play.com share similar set of beliefs as collectors. I have to say they are the only retailer who have made a real effort to get what we want as collectors. Neither Play.com or ourselves can help it if the film studios are greedy and don't respect our niche but increasingly popular market.

maybe im in a minority in my beliefs, but im not concerned with the asian market in the slightest.
there are a few titles they get that we dont, and we pay more for shipping than we do for the steels themselves from the likes of amazon.jp. that prices me right out of the market.it must be the same for the asian collectors having to import uk steels.
in truth, that part of the world dont get a great many steels (and nor do the US until the recent run of inside-art-less canada copies) so we shouldnt begrudge the collectors in other countries a little bit of the fun we are getting.
maybe demand is high over there for the alien films?

I know plenty of collectors would like expensive-appreciating-in-value steelbooks, and that 'ive got something you cant have' mentality makes plenty of folk happy, but personally, i would prefer not to have to import the films i want steelbooks of.
i would be happy for every title that has yet been released in germany/canada/japan etc to be re-issued in the uk, with english text/spines/write up-data sheet etc.
that for me doesnt de-value the sentimental value, only the resale cash value.
and of course, as with the play.com iron man, as nice as it is gonna be, its still not the canadian one.
even if the exact same artwork is re-used elsewhere in the world, the data sheet will be different right? a collectable will still be a collectable.
i would love to own the canadian IM, but i dont value any steelbook above £50. even if it was the last copy in existence of my favourite film. as nice as steelbooks are, they are only metal cases for a 90minute film, that sits on the shelf for 99.9% of its life, being ignored.

i think perhaps play.com are overkilling the market at present, hence most titles are still available in spite of limited runs.
but that is down to not everyone haveing £200 free in the space of 2 weeks to spend on metal cases of older films.
the point there is though, that they are available. and thats a good thing for collectors in general.
its nice to have more choice. i may not care for many of the films that are being put out, but there must be demand for them.
zulu for example, i didnt really like the film, so i wont buy it. but plenty of people will like it and really want it.
Will it be collectable? will it go oop before release? will it rocket in 'value' and change hands for £100+ in a years time? irrelivant! as long as you like the film, like the artwork etc, then buy it, and enjoy it. if it gets a release in the US, then america is lucky too. they get to own it too, without paying a lot to import it, and risk having a disc locked to a region they cant play.

as someone who collects steelbooks (and i got bitten bad by the bug. i had over 200 before i started to be selective) the market value or rarity doesnt bother me. i have sold some of the harder to find titles on account of not being keen on the artwork, or not wanting foreign text. (independence day, zombieland, death race etc)
i would prefer a uk release of all of them, worth £9.99.
they would mean more to me than £80 worth of german steelbook, or an iron pack.
i love the new kick ass, not oop, cheap, but for me, i love it far more than most of my other steelbooks. and with braveheart, i love the artwork, and its one of my favourite films. i wa praying for a steelbook for aaaages. now we have one.
its not rare or expensive, but if could only keep 10 steelbooks out of my whole collection, braveheart and kick ass would be 2 of my collection of 10.

well said funky!

:D

i get that plenty of people will be world-wide collectors, and it must be annoying when a film gets numerous releases world-wide. especially if you pay a lot to get an import, only for more local one to pop up at a quarter of the price.
but for evey world-wide collector, there are probably 50 collectors who stick to their own country of origin.
myself, i have certain criteria now, if theres a bi-lingual spine, then im out.
if its euro released, with foriegn writing anywhere, im out.
if its an iron pack, metal pack or viva case, im out.
i only go for steelbooks, and only with full english.
the only exception is for canadian releases with all english spines. i can just about tolerate having french text under the english, but it grates on me.
i even have 3 or 4 bi lingual spines, which i hate with a vengeance. only keet them as i love the films and love the artwork apart from the damn spines grrrrrr.
so for me, i dont care who is against it, i am wishing for a US or UK release (with exactly the same artwork inside and out) of memento, traffic, gangs of new york and no country for old men.
would also take replacements for my (now sold) dusk till dawn, wrestler, eastern promises, and in fact, pretty much every single canadian bi lingual spine steelbook :hilarious:

I still have total faith/trust in Play... they're just a retailer after all, so have no control over these sort of things. It reminds me of the 'Real Heroes' collection that was originally exclusive to HMV... eventually they were available to buy from every single online retailer, and the studios are obviously the ones to blame.

It's very frustrating and sad to see the word "exclusive" slowly heading down the same road as "limited edition" though, which just seems to get slapped on anything and everything nowadays.

I don't think many people be ordering this because it would cost £45 shipped without customs and £55 with customs. That is if the SB is £20. Only 1 per order most probably. Who wants to buy this? lol

I'm here to tell you, Play has been nothing short of phenomenal! They will continue to work hard on providing HDN members a reason to "collect" steelbooks, not just "buy" steelbooks.

A little off topic, but since we're talking about play.com...Might I suggest they start shipping to the U.S so us collectors in the states can get them more easily? :D

For the record I wasn't thinking of anyone in particular, just the hype that generated in these forum posts in general. Don't take it personally.

I wouldn't want that to be honest. I think it's actually good to have some steelbooks which are harder to get. How boing would it be office there were no group buys, or intertional trades and everyone could get what they wanted at the click of the mouse? I think it makes collecting more fun.
