A 14-YEAR-OLD boy in southern Russia has been charged with killing his father with a sledgehammer after his parents tried to stop him from playing computer games.

The unnamed boy in the coastal town of Tuapse, located by the Black Sea in Russia's southern Krasnodar region, bludgeoned his father to death while he lay sleeping, regional investigators said.

"At around 1am (local time) on April 12, the suspect dealt his sleeping father at least two blows on the head with a sledgehammer," the region's investigative committee said.

"The man died on the spot from a head injury.

A spokeswoman said the parents had taken away the keyboard as a disciplinary measure after he spent a week playing computer games.

After the killing, the boy's frightened mother gave him the keyboard back and the boy played computer games for several more hours until he fell asleep, the spokeswoman said.

At that point, the mother, who was not injured, contacted relatives who in turn called police.

The boy, who has no criminal record, is now being held in pre-trial detention.

At 14, he is old enough to be charged with murder under Russian law.

Dayum, now thats taking Red Faction too seriously!

Thats brutal. I mean, i get a bad attitude while playing vidz sometimes..if i am having a bad game, but when the game goes off i don't loose my cool that easily. My parents took away my Sega Genesis back in the day (was addicted to Mortal Kombat..i think?) and i never got it back, but i didn't go on a rampage and try and kill my parents over it. I think it just got me out of the house more and thats when i started blazing chronic, it was in Grade 7 or 8. In a way, there is good things and bad things when coming between kids and there games.

Well this is just an example of the parents not taking their role serious. ****, my kid know's better than to do something all day, everyday. At the same time I believe that all kids should have somewhat of fear of their parents because that somehow leads to respect. But that's just me.

I have this argument with my girlfriend/spousal equivalent - she's of the modern "absolutely no physical discipline whatsoever" mindset, which I think has done nothing but bring up a couple generations now of selfish, disrespective little a-holes. I love my parents dearly, and VERY rarely was I actually spanked, but I still had a healthy fear of them (dad especially) - just enough to make me think twice before doing something "bad". Children in their developmental stages are very susceptible to conditioning, and providing negative stimuli (not a beating but a sting of sorts) in response to bad behaviour is the best way to teach them to avoid bad behaviour.
