I can't believe there isn't a thread in here strictly for Beer. Well now there is.

So I'm going to Phoenix and this store is about 3 miles from the house I am renting. I need some recommendations of beer they sell. I'm looking for Hoppy beers please. I've had a few of them they sell but not allot. HELP ME OUT!

Thanks

BoB

Rolling Rock is actually an America Adjunct Lager. You may like some pale ales. They are not as bitter as IPA's but still have the nice hop aroma

You know what I really like as of late ... Sapporo the Japanese Beer ... man that **** is good!

Southern Tier Pumking, Jolly Pumpkin La Parcela (if you like it a little sour), and Heavy Seas The Greater Pumpkin (Barrel aged version) are my favorites though im not sure they are distributed by you. Others that are really good are Schafly Pumpkin Ale and Williamsburg AleWerks Pumpkin. I also hear Elysian makes some good pumpkin beers. You gotta read the label a lot of pumpkin beers are just beer brewed with spices. You gotta find the ones brewed with real pumpkin. Hope that helps

Cheers

Schlafly Pumpkin Ale is my favorite. :scat: I've been making some amazing pumpkin bread with it too!

dude, weak. seriously. love me the ipa, specially dipas. the more citra the better!

ive been hankering to try some heady topper. that and kern river's citra are my two must try dipas. course, they are also just about everyone else's :p

so far tho, new glarus' IIPA is my favorite. odell's mycenary is prolly second. looking forward to trying surly's wet, i heard this year's is 100% citra hops! :) :)

I'll have to agree with Wreck that the SN Torpedo wasn't very good. I don't know what the date was on it, but it tasted like I was drinking a mushroom. I'm a big fan of the IPA, AIPA, and DIPA, but there are a few that I just can't do. I did see something exciting on Saturday when I stopped by 2nd Shift. I gave a friend a tour of the brewery, and saw Art of Neurosis, their DIPA, fermenting. I can't wait until it's done! I also got to try their Liquid Spiritual Delight (LSD), the big stout. It was very smooth and really good. I can see this one sneaking up on you after awhile.

I also hit up my local beer group's Funk Fest. Admission was a 22oz or larger bottle of a sour or funky beer. I got to try some really weird stuff, but a lot of it was really good too. I was excited to finally be able to try some Upland, New Glarus, 3 Fonteinen, and Cantillion. Unfortunately, the worst one that was brought to the table was the Crooked Stave Petit Sour Guava. It smelled and tasted like cheese. The sad thing was, we had two bottles, one was mine and someone else brought the other. The biggest dissapointment for the event was that I missed getting to try The Bruery/Cigar City ISO:FT. I left before that one came out.

Edit: Does anyone have access to the Upland or New Glarus stuff? I had and liked a couple of the Upland lambics and New Glarus Wisconsin Belgian Red yesterday.

Beer Porn!

So I cant compete with the pics splax posted awhile ago (not many can!), this is probably the best my cooler has looked ever.

Also, I got a good phone call today. The place that kinda screwed me last week ended up calling me saying they had a bottle of CBS left for me. Apparently people put their name on a list and then ended up not wanting any?? I was very confused, but didnt ask any questions and picked up my 2nd bottle today! :scat:

Heres my cooler contents (from left to right)

DFH Burton Baton DIPA
Bells Batch 10,000 and Expedition Stout
Founders Breakfast Stout
Upland Raspberry Lambic (holding it for Off, but since he hasn't paid me yet technically its mine, hehe)
Founders CBS
Surly Five
Central Waters Brewhouse Coffee Stout (better than Breakfast Stout IMO)
Tyranena Dirty Old Man Imperial Rye Porter
Peche Mortel

We are also going to but a bottle of 23 yr old Pappy Van Winkle bourbon ($240). Luckily there are about 10 of us lol.

What is a QUICK and easy way for me to know what I can buy and store for say up to a year max?

Super busy these past couple of days. I will be having a beer dominated weekend as soon as I get off work today. Tonight Diva and I are going to a beer fest at the Missouri Botanical Garden. There will be 11 different breweries ranging from the small/newly opened like Perennial, Urban Chestnut, Crown Valley, to the bigger guys like Schlafly and O'Fallon. Saturday, I'll be finishing up my mash tun. Sunday, I'll be brewing and watching football. I'll also be meeting up with one of my local beer guys to pick up my two bottles of Rogue Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon Porter.

I'm just happy that I found a beer fest that she can go to! :scat:

As for the cellaring, I've had good results with the higher ABV stouts, barleywines, and porters. I've also had some really good aged sours. I really need to get a good barleywine back in my cellar and start aging again. If anyone is on BeerAdvocate, expect to see a want list from me shortly. Don't laugh too hard.

Offcontstantly

as for aging they got it covered. Just make sure you store them in a dark cool place. my sours I keep in my kegerator at about 46F. 50-55 is a good cellaring temp tho its not easy to keep temps in that range. A few friends took old refrigerators installed some type of temp regulator so that they could change the temp to what they wanted.

thats funny, i just now realized that contstantly is spelled wrong, lol. prolly why i couldnt search for you Off ;)

i got a wine refrigerator two years ago and it can keep the temp between 55-57 (i verified with an external thermometer) at the level i have it on now. i think i paid like $120 for the thing, so not too bad of an investment. i really need it to as i rent and have no basement space. only problem is that there isn't a ton of space, and i dont think you should store beer on its side so i cant use the racks. the bottles i showed in the picture is all i can fit in it and its completely jammed pack

Nope, you've got it right. If you store them on their side, they run a greater risk of contamination from being in contact with the cap or cork.

They are bottling surly darkness today. I really hope surly starts to distribute to Wisconsin soon, I think this one will be too hard for my sister to track down for me :(

I agree, unless she goes to Darkness Day. I think it's this weekend.

yah, i think you are right. but theres no way shes gonna wait hours in a line in 40 degree weather so she can buy me a couple bottles of darkness. shes an awesome sister, but thats just crazy for someone who doesn't even like beer that much :p

BTW, france44store.com has surly wet on sale right now for $16.99. theres not much left so if you want some better pick it up quick. it sold out in a couple hours last time they had it up.

You guys talk about cellaring ... that might be where I confused you ... I'm just talking about sticking it in a closet in my house. Dark, yes. 55 degrees, far from it. lol. 75-80 degrees more like it.

On the same hand, I'm not really trying to age them .. although that would be nice, it's more that some friends from back home come to visit me like once a year. I just thought it would be cool to stock up stuff so when they come I have a ton of diff stuff to choose from. I don't have an awesome beer store anywhere near me. I have one decent one which is an hour away ... so its not as simple as just going out and buying a bunch when they come to town. Plus its also fun to stock pile :p

where the hell you guys at!?

;p

here is my latest pick up ....
