So what should i do - return the item? Surely this kind of costs makes the whole sle purchase pointless? I have ordered hundreds of pounds from amazon japan before, and have never paid an import duty of this amount.

Why the **** did i order from amazon.ca when i saw it posted here, i should have asked one of our helpful members to buy it on my behalf. $42 shipping, and now UPS comes to door with a whopping £60 bill, thats half of the cost of the products i paid.

How exactly do UPS calculate these costs, i thought it is 20% on total bill?

Anything above £ 15 in value ( not including shipping) attracts attention and taxes. They don't include the shipping costs in that £ 15 limit but they conveniently add the shipping cost on to the 20 % tax you pay if you initially breach the £ 15 limit on the value of the item itself.

It's 20 % on the total bill (including the shipping cost) and then DHL add on between £ 10-12 for handling it and paying the customs fee on your behalf.
If you paid $ 42 shipping then how many did you order ? 15 ? 20 ? :ohno:

I suppose you can return them but what's the point ? You'll have to pay the return fees and you won't get your money back on the tax as you have already signed for the parcel upon delivery.

Well, once you paid UPS there is not much you can do anymore about the fee I guess.
You might contact amazon, but it depends of course on the total value of the order.
I remember I ordered the King Kong Digibook from amazon.com a couple of years ago and the whole order was for roughly 19euro.
Amazon.com upgraded the shipping to UPS for some reason and UPS asked for 21euro customs including handling fee.
I refused it at the door telling the driver I will not pay 21euro for customs when the whole order is 19euro including shipping, I also sent an email to amazon about it.
A couple of days later UPS was back and delivered it without the fee saying it was a mistake.

That happens a lot. I had a replacement item shipped out and the dingbats at Amazon Canada upgraded the shipping to UPS with a £ 30 cost - sure enough UPS arrived with a bill of over £ 20 tax etc for a £ 15 item - just told them over the phone it was a replacement sent out by Amazon Canada that I had already paid for and they told me to forget about it.

I hate freaking costums!

I once had to pay about £40 in costums for just 3 movies. :/

I ordered those from kimchidvd, but the second time around I took advantage of the gift/merchandise options and wrote 13.50 USD instead of the original 73 USD and I skipped the costums.

Been neglecting this thread so why I had a spare hour ;)
