Official Synapse Press Release/Info on Disc/Extras:

A 3-DISC (BLU-RAY, DVD & CD) LIMITED STEELBOOK™ EDITION OF DARIO ARGENTO’S HORROR CLASSIC! ONLY 3000 UNITS PRODUCED!
Italian terror master Dario Argento elevates the Giallo genre to new heights with 1982’s TENEBRAE, a darkly humorous, futuristic and notoriously grisly horror film many consider to be one of his finest works.

American mystery author Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa) comes to Italy to promote his newest novel, TENEBRAE. Unfortunately, a razor-wielding serial killer is on the loose, taunting Neal and murdering those around him in gruesome fashion just like the character in his novel. As the mystery surrounding the killings spirals out of control, Neal investigates the crimes on his own, leading to a mind-bending, genre-twisting conclusion that will leave you breathless!

This all-new 1080p high-definition release of TENEBRAE is presented here, for the FIRST TIME EVER, with rare English insert shots never-before-seen on any optical disc release! Starring John Saxon (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), Daria Nicolodi (Dario Argento’s PHENOMENA) and John Steiner (CALIGULA), this slasher-horror classic also features an amazing music score from Claudio Simonetti, Fabio Pignatelli and Massimo Morante (formerly of Italian progressive-rock band, Goblin).

RAZOR-SHARP SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE:

    • All-new Synapse Films supervised color correction and restoration of a 1080p scan from original uncut negative elements, presented in the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1
    • Dual English and Italian language options with newly-translated English subtitle tracks for both
    • Audio commentary track featuring film critic and Argento scholar, Maitland McDonagh
    • Original international trailer
    • Booklet containing liner notes by Derek Botelho, author of THE ARGENTO SYNDROME, with additional technical notes by Vincent Pereira and Don May, Jr.
    • Chapter Selections
    • Collectible Steelbook™ Packaging by Silver Ferox Design
SPECIAL FEATURES EXCLUSIVE TO THE BLU-RAY DISC INCLUDE:

    • Rare high-definition 1080p English sequence insert shots, playable within the film via seamless branching
    • Feature-length in-depth documentary, YELLOW FEVER: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE GIALLO by High Rising Productions, chronicling the giallo film genre from its beginnings as early 20th century crime fiction, to its later influences on the modern slasher film genre. Featuring interviews with Dario Argento, Umberto Lenzi, Luigi Cozzi, Lamberto Bava, Richard Stanley, and more!
    • Original UNSANE (U.S. version of TENEBRAE) end credits sequence
    • Alternate opening credits sequence
    • Japanese SHADOW theatrical trailer
INCLUDES A BONUS COMPACT DISC (19 Tracks) featuring an all-new 2015 remaster of the TENEBRAE motion picture soundtrack, containing additional tracks not included on the original 1982 album.

It says fitting for October which means it could be Halloween themed.
I really dont want yet another Halloween release (yes its a fantastic movie but come on enough already), so PLEASE let it be Trick R Treat!!
I thought we were told that the steelbook already exists but this edition will have an exclusive slipcover?? So that would rule out Trick R Treat.

Or did I miss something?

That's HDN Exclusive #3 I think. This is what the boss said about this release:

ah hell here's another one for ya ....

Some have said they hope its a new steelbook. It is. Its not a title that has been done to death in steelbook packaging. To my knowledge there has only been 1? steelbook of this before (least in blu-ray) in the world....

if the numbers dont change, the same could be said of #2 and #3 has never seen a SteelBook.

Could be Nightmare Before Christmas then?
Nightmare Before Christmas is from 1993

Black Label Exclusive #1 is a film from the 80's

80's Classic Horror Film
Director is HIGHLY REGARDED!
New Transfer not already released
Was only 1 previous steelbook release before on Blu-ray

So its from the 80's
Its a new transfer
Its a new steelbook with new artwork not a re-release of the previous steelbook

80s horror with a previous steelbook and highly regarded director..hmm!

Wes Craven- A Nightmare In Elm Street

Sam Raimi- The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2

David Cronenberg- The Fly, Scanners

Stanley Kubrick- The Shining

George Romero- Day Of The Dead

OK. I'm losing sleep over this!! This seriously has me stumped!!! :wacky::confused:

So, from the info we've been drip fed (:rofl: ) any classic 80's horror that was released on Steelbook I think I have in my collection.

I've come to the following conclusions......

1. Poltergeist. Classic-yes. New transfer coming-no. Highly regarded director-yes.
2 Evil Dead. Classic-yes. New transfer coming-no. Highly regarded director-yes.
3 Day Of The Dead. Classic-yes. New transfer coming-no. Highly regarded director-yes.
4 Nightmare On Elm Street. Classic-yes. New transfer coming-no. Highly regarded director-yes.
5 Return Of The Living Dead. Classic-yes. New transfer coming-yes. Highly regarded director-no not really (only Horror film he directed really)

Other worthy mentions I can think of are:

Friday The 13th (Not released on Steelbook before)
Exorcist (Not an 80's movie)
Army Of Darkness (Not 80's)

So unless we have false information somewhere, nothing I can think of ticks all the boxes??

Unless Dan O Bannon (Return Of The Living Dead) is highly regarded but more as a writer and not a director??? This could be the red herring that's throwing me off??:confused:

@BluSteel2012 i would have put down John Carpenter's The Thing but we just have a Mondo release, and also The Lost Boys but Joel Schumacher is not highly regarded

The Thing was released in the UK and in Germany as Das Ding!! And, as you said, now the Mondo version.

Joel Schumacher is dodgy at best and The Lost Boys doesn't have any special transfer that I know about.

I'll have to go with Return Of The Living Dead (a return of the infamous 'glow in the dark' slipcover like was used on the U.S. DVD maybe?) as it's the closest I can get.

Unless I'm missing something blatantly obvious from my collection!!! :p

To reiterate the clues provided to date, in the order in which they were given.

1) Horror (not "Halloween").
2) 1980s release.
3) Considered to be a classic.
4) Highly regarded director.
5) 99% probability the transfer will be the best yet for this title.
6) Not a title 'done to death' in Steelbook packaging.
7) Only one previous Steelbook release in Blu-ray format.
8) New transfer not already released.

The only film that jumps out at me and ticks all bar one of the boxes is Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" (1980).

The one thing that makes me hesitant is that apart from the better known UK Steelbook, released by Zavvi in 2014, there was also a German Steelbook, with different artwork, released later that year by Media Markt. Maybe that fact was missed because everything else fits the bill.

In 2012, "The Shining" was given a theatrical re-release by the BFI in the UK, for the first time ever in its extended US cut (144 mins). The previous 1980 release had been the trimmed international cut (119 mins). For this theatrical re-release, Warner had provided a new transfer. That new transfer has never been made commercially available on any home video format. All Blu-ray releases to date, including those since 2012, have been of the previous 2006 transfer.

Another clue is provided by the BBFC site which shows that as recently as May 2015, Warner had resubmitted the film, in its extended US cut, for a VOD classification. That's normally a precursor to a hard copy home video release.

Let's also not forget that this year marks the film's 35th anniversary. It would be remiss of Warner not to commemorate that fact with a new release.

If this does prove to be "The Shining", and I hope that it will be, it would be great if Warner were to go back to Saul Bass' original artwork which hasn't been used on any home video format in years.

If it's not "The Shining" then I give up!

I sincerely hope that you are right. Nothing would be better than having a The Shining steelbook by HDN!
