One big reason Dredd did so badly at the box office was that in a really bad stroke of luck it came out just a few months after The Raid, which had essentially the same plot as Dredd, something that was referenced in nearly every review I read prior to its release.

Your right buddy..;)

But if people did their research they would find that Dredd had finished filming long before The Raid had been done. The Raid then got the jump on them and came out first so there were all the comparisons to it when Dredd finally came out...Maybe if Dredd had came out first and also had a way better advertising push for the film it might have done better.

Just ordered with HMV. I was only going for UK steel books but T2 from Korea put a stop to that. I'm just going to be more selective in what I buy. Its getting to be an obsession. Enjoyable though.

Fewer people saw the Raid in cinemas and on blu-ray outside of fans of Asian/genre action-films and it earned about a quarter what Dredd did at the box-office so I can't see how the Raid impacted Dredd's box-office at all. Most of the people who went to see Dredd never saw the Raid and the general cinema going audience don't read reviews when choosing which film to go to. There was little cross-over between Dredd and the Raid audiences.

The biggest impediment to Dredd was the legacy of the Stallone film. Most people presumed it was a 'remake' of an all ready bad film, made with a lower budget and a lesser star, thinking that meant it wouldn't be any good. Some people wouldn't go to it because Stallone wasn't in it!

There aren't many reboots/remakes outside of Dredd and the Punisher that have previous versions which were historically and notoriously bad films. Studios only reboot previously successful films or franchises.

Hence why Dredd's blu-ray sales out-strip its box-office due to word-of-mouth and torrenting.
