the more I see this steelbook, the more im leaning towards actually getting one (even if it is a bit on the expensive side). I loved the movie and was kinda disapointed that no other countries made a steelbook of it

Just watched this on 3d at home and thought the 3d was by far the worst 3d blu ray I've seen in terms of 3d quality. In fact, most of the movie looked 2d with absolutely zero depth let alone pop out. After the first 30 minutes or so I switched to 2d and watched it in 3d conversion and thought the 3d looked far better that way. Was shocked when I read the review on hidefdigest which praised the blu ray for its PQ, specifically the quality of the 3d.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Which edition did you watch? I know that the quality can differ depending on which version you have. Especially when they cram everything on one disc.

It was the US Blu-ray which has the 2D and 3D versions on the same disc. That shouldn't have any impact on 3D depth at all, IMHO. What I saw when I played the 3D version looked completely flat, like a 2D picture. I've seen some great 3D Blu-rays like Life of Pi and Hugo, and Dredd 3D looked nothing at all like that. Not even close. Even Avengers, which was a 3D conversion (Dredd was supposedly shot in 3D) looked lightyears better. Wonder why.

We did briefly mention this one the French tin edition thread. Some of us ordered that version merely for its separation of the versions. Still waiting for mine to arrive but should make it this week.

Although, this is not a great difference as you say, so it is odd that your edition had such poor 3D rendition.

Yup, that's why I ordered the French edition as no quality is lost as the 3D and 2D are on separate discs

Dredd is an odd movie for 3D mainly because of the different cameras and some of the grain.

You may think it looks terrible, but that's how it's supposed to look. Avengers looked more 3D because it was a mega budget movie, shot with mega budget cameras, using techniques that are appealing to the masses. Dredd is a low budget movie, shot with various cameras, using techniques some are put off by.

What I find puzzling is how Avengers was shot in 2D and then converted to 3D in post production whereas Dredd was shot in 3D yet shows only a tiny percentage of 3D depth of Avengers (and other conversions).

I have asked CDJapan the reason for it does not specify in its title the word steelbook and I have answered this:

www.cdjapan.co.jp

Just in case, please note that the material isn't steel.

It will look like the image they posted on the official
blog below, but we've been told that the material
will be cardboard that will only look metallic.

:wtf:

A CardboardBook? Hmm, sounds like something was lost in translation. :)
