It's 100% correct. He doesn't say it would've been a 'success', he says it would've made more money if it had been released in 2D aswell which is true. As for 'how it works where you live' (i'll ignore the fact that it sounds really insulting), the vast majority of 3D films are shown in 2D and 3D but for some reason the studio refused to allow nearly every cinema in the UK to show it in 2D. You can read more about here:

http://blogs.independent.co.uk/2012/10/16/dredd-shows-why-the-3d-film-format-is-doomed-again/

sucks that it wasn't shown in 2D in the UK, but I don't buy for a second it would have done better. If people really wanted to go see it, an extra £1 or £2 wasn't going to stop them. The fact of the matter is Dredd failed for a lot more reasons than '3D is a gimmick'.

It's not a case of paying an extra £1 or £2, some people just don't want to watch 3D. Fewer cinemas show 3D, there are less showings and therefore less chance someone will take the time to watch a film released in 3D. Dredd failed in the UK at least because very few people actually saw the film.

.....
Loved this re imaging of Dredd and really hope there is a sequel.
;)

Apparently all the fans of this movie were asleep during its theatrical run... It went out of theatre with a huge loss. No sequel will be happening according to the director as they didn't even get close to the $# they needed set by the studio in order to grant a sequel.

It always shocks and amazes me when a movie has so many fans, so many good reviews yet no one shows at the theatre to support/watch it and then they wonder what happened...

i think the problem too, to try to stay on topic is the fact most theaters are EXPENSIVE and with movies like ie. dredd or insidious (which i loved too) people have their doubts and aren't willing to spend that money on release week and rather wait a bit till the reviews... I personally wait for blu ray now in the comfort of my home if im not 100% sure i want to see a movie

If you read all the reviews of the film they all state that the picture quality in 2D is way inferior to the quality in 3D as the entire film was conceived, with regards to depth of field and set layouts specifyly for the 3D cameras and to give the entire film a more involved and immersive feel when watching.

;)

On the French and German 2D releases, the image quality is better than the 3D combo discs. On the 3D combo discs, the isolated 2D is only using one-half of the 3D image, or the left eye, and is also brighter and more saturated because it's adjusted for 3D rather than 2D viewing; the image is also slightly cropped at the sides, and top and bottom. The French 2D version has the best image quality of any releases and I suspect the Japan 2D version will too.

No, all or most comic Judge Dredd fans went to see it - it's the general audience that didn't bother. The director hasn't commented on the possibilities of a sequel - it was one of the producers - but he has said he wouldn't be involved in one if there was. It's Alex Garland's film first and foremost - Pete Travis was a director-for-hire.

Dude do the math... they spent 50 million and they made 37 million. They needed to make 100 million to just break even! let alone turn any profits for the studio. The studio will not green light a sequel even with the insane home media release sales this movie has made. Its just not gunna' happen. Personally I went to the theatre to go watch the movie as Im a fan of all comic/graphic book novel adaptations. If all the fans showed up then the best guess as a main reason this movie failed in theatre was the forced 3D on people (it almost made me not wanna' go watch it in theatre).

Anyhow, great movie and a great steelbook to match. :)

Here's the news article from last week. This was reported on Darkhorizons.com:

"It was already thought to be the case, but now it is set in stone - there will NOT be a sequel to last year's "Dredd," the surprisingly fun and robust take on the Judge Dredd comics.

During a recent Reddit online Q&A, producer Adi Shankar was surprisingly honest about why the sequel isn't happening:
"It’s because the movie totally bombed & R-rated movies are a tough sell to begin with. If Dredd becomes a cult hit it will be awesome. Last September was a terrible month: Dredd bombed and then Looper became a massive hit a week later!"

Shankar adds that he is working on a "Dredd" short film in the vein of "Dirty Laundry," the "Punisher"-themed short fan film he and Thomas Jane did together last year."

Eh, dude, I know; I never said there'd be a sequel - not sure how you thought I said there would be - tell me something that's incorrect in what I wrote? The video sales haven't been 'insane', they've just been decent for a film that flopped, and it's a steady seller. Two genre films released round the same time with average budgets, Looper and Resident Evil, sold way more discs. If Dredd had sold over a million discs in its first week of release, then it would be 'insane', and we'd be getting a sequel.

Oh man, that's exactly what I wanted in a Dredd steelbook, but I don't collect outside of the UK :( At least there's one in existence though so I'll hold off getting the regular release for a little while longer.

@SPENDER J

Your right the 2D french blu ray is superior in terms of picture quality compared to the US. I was really focusing on the 3D as I have more interest in watching it in 3D as that was the way it was filmed and intended to be seen.
;)

But the US has 7.1 DTS.HD where as the french only 5.1, and as I have a 11.1 set up thats what I want to hear...

I watched the french Metropolitan 2D version last night and although I still enjoyed the film, I got so much more out of the 3D Version, as I have a Reference set up in my Cinema Room. And so can take full advantage of a good 3D Film...
;)

Some people don't care for 3D but I am not one of them. And it also boils down to having the right set up, i.e. screen size, brightness level of your projector, preferring active to passive and of course making sure you have the best tint free glasses for viewing with, etc...

So many cinemas that show 3D films never have their projectors bright enough as the cost of replacing the bulb is very expensive so they compromise and lower the brightness to save money and the life of the bulb!!!! That is why so many people complain about the film being too dark.
Quite a few of my friends went to see Dredd in 3D and were not that impressed.. So I showed them the film again on my set up and they were blown away.
Set up is all important when it comes to watching in the third dimension...

This Steelbook is a beauty, but I for one will be keeping it sealed. :p

One big reason Dredd did so badly at the box office was that in a really bad stroke of luck it came out just a few months after The Raid, which had essentially the same plot as Dredd, something that was referenced in nearly every review I read prior to its release.
