Steelbook artwork now up on the HMV Japan website
It's 100% correct. He doesn't say it would've been a 'success', he says it would've made more money if it had been released in 2D aswell which is true. As for 'how it works where you live' (i'll ignore the fact that it sounds really insulting), the vast majority of 3D films are shown in 2D and 3D but for some reason the studio refused to allow nearly every cinema in the UK to show it in 2D. You can read more about here:

sucks that it wasn't shown in 2D in the UK, but I don't buy for a second it would have done better. If people really wanted to go see it, an extra £1 or £2 wasn't going to stop them. The fact of the matter is Dredd failed for a lot more reasons than '3D is a gimmick'.
.....
Loved this re imaging of Dredd and really hope there is a sequel.

If you read all the reviews of the film they all state that the picture quality in 2D is way inferior to the quality in 3D as the entire film was conceived, with regards to depth of field and set layouts specifyly for the 3D cameras and to give the entire film a more involved and immersive feel when watching.

Apparently all the fans of this movie were asleep during its theatrical run... It went out of theatre with a huge loss. No sequel will be happening according to the director as they didn't even get close to the $# they needed set by the studio in order to grant a sequel.
On the French and German 2D releases, the image quality is better than the 3D combo discs. On the 3D combo discs, the isolated 2D is only using one-half of the 3D image, or the left eye, and is also brighter and more saturated because it's adjusted for 3D rather than 2D viewing; the image is also slightly cropped at the sides, and top and bottom. The French 2D version has the best image quality of any releases and I suspect the Japan 2D version will too.

No, all or most comic Judge Dredd fans went to see it - it's the general audience that didn't bother. The director hasn't commented on the possibilities of a sequel - it was one of the producers - but he has said he wouldn't be involved in one if there was. It's Alex Garland's film first and foremost - Pete Travis was a director-for-hire.

Dude do the math... they spent 50 million and they made 37 million. They needed to make 100 million to just break even! let alone turn any profits for the studio. The studio will not green light a sequel even with the insane home media release sales this movie has made. Its just not gunna' happen. Personally I went to the theatre to go watch the movie as Im a fan of all comic/graphic book novel adaptations. If all the fans showed up then the best guess as a main reason this movie failed in theatre was the forced 3D on people (it almost made me not wanna' go watch it in theatre).
At least there's one in existence though so I'll hold off getting the regular release for a little while longer.
