Gran Turismo 5 (also known as GT5) the fifth edition of the highly acclaimed Gran Turismo racing video game series, developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Expanding on the Prologue version, which was first released in Japan on December 13, 2007 and intended to give an impression of the final game, it will be the first of the main numbered series to feature on the PlayStation 3.

As found in the Prologue, and for the first time in the numbered Gran Turismo series, the game is set to feature cars from Ferrari, including the Ferrari F2007 Formula One World Championship car. In addition to Prologue features, it will also include the Test Track from the BBC motoring show Top Gear, and will greatly expand on the number of cars available to over 9000. There will also be a 16 player online mode as in GT5 Prologue.

In an April 2008 interview, Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that 150 people had worked on Gran Turismo 5 for four years, with all of Polyphony Digital's 120 employees working on GT5, and the game costing 50 times more to develop than 1997's Gran Turismo. He also confessed that GT5 might not be released until after 2009. In a July 2008 interview with IGN, Yamauchi mentioned that at the moment, Polyphony Digital is focused on updates for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and that Gran Turismo 5 may not be released until 2010.

On November 30, 2008. Sony’s chief executive in Southern Europe, James Armstrong, revealed in a statement to a Spanish newspaper that GT5 is expected to be released around Christmas 2009. This would probably mean a late Summer release for Japan and an Autumn/Winter release for Europe and North America. This release date has yet to be confirmed as an official time of release by Polyphony Digital.

Yamauchi Promises Updates

Yamauchihas promised that GT5 would be ”upgrading every week, every month” to polish up the game’s performance, with the first major fix targeting the racer’s online component.

“Online updates are planned of course for leaderboards and matchmaking – [they're] all planned in the process of evolution,” he said.

I'm sorry but shouldn't this game be very polished after being in development for that long? There's no excuse for needing weekly updates if you've been working on a game that long.

---------- Post added at 04:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:09 PM ----------

Also, when the hell did they decide to put it out prior to thanksgiving? I've been waiting for christmas and I just now find out today that it's already out.

Well, the updates aren't only for polishing. They will be adding new stuff as well. And ALL games. No matter how long you work on it, will run into some issue eventually.

They announced the release date a week or more back.

GT5 getting mechanical damage patch this month

Gran Turismo 5 will be patched with mechanical damage support this month, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed.

To date, the Polyphony Digital racer only includes bodywork damage, though this will soon be upgraded to mechanical damage at some point in early December.

Elsewhere, Yamauchi-san also pledged his continued support for the Logitech G25 and G27 steering wheels, though didn’t shy away from admitting he’d like to see a “new steering device” come out “soon.”

He then touched base on YouTube integration, revealing the replay upload feature was scrapped from the retail release, as it was taking too long to render and gobbling up a fair amount of memory to boot. However, the feature is being considered for inclusion in a future update.

Lastly, Yamauchi-san teased that Polyphony briefly flirted with the idea of putting a free-roam area in GT5, allowing players to drive freely while adhering to the speed limit and traffic laws. Apparently, you could even vacate your car and go for a leisurely walk about.

Yamauchi-san confirms save back-up patch for GT5

Gran Turismo overlord Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that he’ll be rolling out yet another patch for GT5 later this month.

Writing on Twitter, Yamauchi-san confirmed that the patch will allow gamers to back-up their save data to other storage devices.

This latest effort joins the ever-increasing number of patches currently in the pipeline for the celebrated racer, with Yamauchi only yesterday lifting the lid on an update that’ll address fan concerns pertaining to the game's mechanical damage system.

Well thank you Kaz. I was worried if my console borked again, that I might lose everything.

Yamauchi-san chats GT5 updates

Kazunori Yamauchi, CEO and president of Polyphony Digital, has spilled the beans on what updates gamers can expect to see for Gran Turismo 5 in the near future

Speaking during a chinwag with Famitsu magazine (via Andriasang), Yamauchi-san revealed his desire to issue monthly updates, though wouldn’t commit to the schedule outright.

He did, however, touch base with a meaty region-specific update scheduled for late December. Apparently, this will allow U.S. gamers to try out the GT Academy, while European GT5 owners can pursue a tournament named ‘SLS Challenge.’

Quizzed as to whether or not we could expect fresh DLC in the form of new cars, courses and photo mode locations, the GT overlord was quick to note that developing such content takes a lot of time, and therefore can’t be churned out at the same rate as vanquishing pesky bugs or updating events.

His exact response, according to the mag, is that "they may be added as expansion content" or Polyphony may just "leave it until the next title.” Still, Yamauchi did confirm that the studio plans on upgrading some of the standard motors to premium quality:

"Among the standard cars are some historical classics, and we plan on remaking them as premium cars. There are currently some cars that have both standard and premium versions. Those are cases where the cars were remade," he commented.

Gran Turismo patch v1.05 offers new events, saved data backup

Gran Turismo 5 patch v1.05, a whopping 608 MB update that brings with it a bevy of new content, is now live on the PlayStation Network.

A user on the PlayStation.com forums transcribed the official v1.05 update details in full. This latest patch offers new seasonal events, saved data backup capabilities, and temporarily increased rewards for winning races, among a variety of other tweaks and changes. The full list of details is available below.

Seasonal Events

[Seasonal Events] have been added to the upper left side of the [GT Mode] - [GT Life] screen. From here you can participate in official online events from the Polyphony Digital team.

In these events, all participants race under the same regulations, and if you complete the event you will win rewards and experience. In Time Trials and Drift Trials, compete on the leader boards with players around the world.

Online Race Rewards and Experience

When you complete a race in the [Open Lobby] or [My Lounge], you will now gain rewards and experience points.

Therefore if you are focused more on playing online, you’ll still be able to gain rewards and levels that you need to progress in [GT Life].

Driving Distance and Number of Wins in Online Races

The driving distance and the number of wins you achieve when you complete a race in [Open Lobby] or [My Lounge] will now affect your stats in [Profile] and the [Garage].

Here again the results from your online play will accumulate within [GT Life].

Improved Rewards

The rewards for winning races in both A-Spec and B-Spec in [GT Mode]-[GT Life] have been increased for a limited time only. (This applies until the end of January 2011)

This is a great chance for those who were previously having difficulties getting ahead in the game, due to a lack of funds for tuning and purchasing required cars.

Race Information Display

[Race Information Display] is now available in [Start]-[Quick Options]. (You can also see this in [Race Display] in [Options]).

Save Data Backup

You can now copy and restore your save data. For details, please refer to the in-game [Manual].

Personal BGM (Menu)

From [Options]-[Hardware]-[Audio], it is now possible to set the [Personal BGM] (Menu)]. (This can also be accessed from the [Music Library] within [GT Mode]).

Car Name Change

The official name of "Red Bull X1" has been changed to "Red Bull X2010".

Integration with the Website

The main features within [GT Mode]-[Community] can now also be accessed through the "gran-turismo.com" official website.

Important Note: We have made improvements to the [Log] within [GT Mode]- [Community] section, in order to make its operation more stable. Please note that the information that was here before the update has been reset.

*Some contents of the update will not be applied unless you sign in to the PlayStation®Network when you play the game.

Once they get all of these glitches taken care of, i'll probably pick this up. I was excited to get this for a while, until it got pushed back again and again, then i kinda lost interest. I used to spend many hours with GT 2 & 3, but really didn't like 4 for some reason.

finally played this last night and its alot of fun but warning stay away from killer brew and roadkill, their both dangerous drivers :p lol

Major Gran Turismo 5 Update, Latest GT Academy News

I am excited to confirm that we deployed a new functionality update for Gran Turismo 5 last night. Here are some of the new features and enhancements that have been added to the game.

1. Remote racing between friends to level up drivers.

You can now set your personal AI drivers from B Spec mode in the game to be shared online for other players to challenge, and you can also host fully automated B Spec races (Remote races) that will earn your driver rewards and experience points. When you set up these races, you can either watch the race in real time, or save it to watch later.

If you’re not familiar with B Spec mode, it allows players to create AI drivers that you can coach and manage. They race real races in the game, and you can take the drivers through the full GT career mode.

5456221173_488367538c.jpg

These new Remote races are driven completely by AI Drivers, competing against each other, and the player does not have to drive the car themselves. This is a unique racing strategy simulation mode of Gran Turismo that allows you to enjoy races as you would in a live race broadcast on TV.

2. Supporting Remote Racing from the web browser.

In “Remote Races” you can log in to the official Gran Turismo website using a standard web browser and your PSN ID, and start races, monitor progress and check results. You can basically play GT from anywhere, and level up your B Spec drivers any time.

3. Tracks made in Course Maker can now be used online

You can now bring tracks you created through the simple Course Maker feature and upload them for use in your race lobbies for head to head racing. If you haven’t tried Course Maker yet, you can literally churn out challenging new tracks to race on, in a bunch of cool environments, by just tweaking a few settings. Advanced algorithms help generate unique tracks that are fun to drive on and can be saved and shared.

5456830224_f2781835bc.jpg

4. Car rental system among friends.

You can now rent cars that your friends have set to “shared” status for online. This allows you to co-operate with your friends to advance in the game, lending or borrowing cars you need amongst each other, in addition to those you have acquired on your own. Haven’t earned enough credits for that sweet SLS AMG? Now you can just take your friend’s ride for a spin!

5. Multimonitor display compatibility.

With new multimonitor support, now you can connect multiple PlayStation 3s and multiple monitors to create an ultra high resolution, wide angle field of vision for total immersion. By chaining either 3 or 5 PlayStation 3’s, connected in parallel via LAN, you can create a field of view that covers up to 180 degrees. Pair that with a racing chair and wheel controller setup, and you’re in racing heaven!

We hope that you enjoy these fantastic new features! The update also includes other smaller updates and tweaks GT fans are sure to appreciate.

We kicked off GT Academy last December, with more than 53,000 GT fans signing up to compete for a chance to become a pro race car driver. Now that the latest game update is live, we will be starting Round 3 of the online portion of the competition this coming Monday February 21 at 9 AM EST. Round 3 will run for one week and end on Sunday February 27 at midnight EST.

The top 512 players from Round 1, 128 per each of the 4 national regions in the US, will be competing for one of 32 spots at the National Finals event. The National Finals will be a live head-to-head event where the best 16 players will advance on to the GT Academy “boot camp,” where they will compete in real Nissan race cars, among other things. One winner will emerge from the boot camp as the GT Academy champion, and head straight into a rigorous training regimen to prepare for his or her debut race as a pro race car driver in a high profile endurance race, hopefully to take a spot on the podium.

You can keep up with the latest GT Academy news and check rankings and standings on the official GT website, and follow the program on Facebook.
