Totally missed this one - my marshmallow mind has not been keeping up with things of late.

Looks like the german Amazon release it is - but waiting till January 8th is going to sting a bit. But there is no other artwork that will compare with this one - it totally encapsulates the irreverent tone of the film and for us kids who grew up in the 80's the walkman was the coolest thing, ever. Well until the ZX Spectrum anyway...

Which is why I have had to buy imports for some of them already. Just so long as they release something somewhere in the world with a title on the spine then that will be something. Fingers crossed for BB and FS releases
I feel you on that- Had to import Avengers, Thor 2 & The Winter Soldier for the fact they have titles on them. As much as I'm not overly keen on this artwork, I just hope to hell we can have a version with the title on the spine...

I have also pre ordered the German version. It could be the release date changes, anyway. I cant see why we would have to wait until January, as its not as if its different artwork.

As for the titles on spines and on the front, after the FS and BB Cap2 TWS debacle, I now worry about quality control for their future releases. :(

This is why we can't have nice things! The one time Disney actually decides to make an effort and produce some original steelbook art, this is what happens.

So, this artwork is an effort? And the artwork is original but awful at the same time.

 Surely the mixtape/Walkman plays a huge part in the film and is a perfect representation of it? The tape and Walkman play a part during the opening scene with Peter as a kid, and then the introduction of 'star lord'. Peter getting the Walkman back does have some comic relief but also shows how emotionally attached to it Peter is, and don't forget the mix tape is literally the soundtrack to the film.... I can't think of anything else that would make a better design to represent the film

This...100% agreed. You're the :mos: of this thread. A beacon of sense in these dark times

most of the people who are moaning bout this design either
A) Haven't actually seen the film
B) Don't understand the significance of the walkman, something that is sewn throughout the entirety of the film.

Whoa, slow down mate! People like what they like and don't like what they don't like! Simples!

I would say most people are fully aware that the Walkman is central to Peter Quills / Starlords character development.
It doesn't mean they want to see alternate version of a Walkman to be used as the design of a steelbook when it looks bland and negates the fact the guardians are a team, not one character.

That's one thing that does appear to be a problem for studios - consistency in style when a film is part of a larger series. I don't think the title-less "world" releases went down well but if, say, all of Marvel's Phase 2 were the same then it at least would have looked like a set.

Actually when Iron Man 3 came out with the chest plate icon style Steelbook from Zavvi - I was rather hoping we could have got a set that were all embossed icons/logo - would have looked cool as. The Walkman design for Guardians of the Galaxy could have probably been done in that way.

That said with the connections some people on this forum have within the industry we do get our own way sometimes and the feedback occasionally gets back to those in charge. Designing steelbook covers would be a dream job...

First of all, its not even his walkman.
Second, its a colorful space sci-fi action comedy, not a music biopic.
Third, its a dull artwork for such an explosive (in many regards) movie.
Fourth, very poor execution for the idea itself.
Fifth, a big majority would rather see something else, wether they have seen the movie or not.
Sixth, Quill isnt the only one in the movie. Its about all of them..

And its dull and boring.

To have that sort of artistic freedom would be amazing.

You'll never be able to appeal to the whole demographic- especially when everyone wants different things from a steelbook, be it specific or unique artwork, the finish of the steelbook or the necessity of having a title on the case- but like you said, would be a great job.

The thing that slightly irates me about steelbooks (if anything) is the sheer volume of titles we're seeing now, some movies which are totally unworthy of steelbook treatment (when I first starting collecting, I saw steelbooks as the 'holy grail' editions of classic movies, but it feels too saturated now looking at some movies that have been released) Although who am I to judge what does or doesn't constitute a classic movie...

Couldn't agree more. I'm all for alternate designs, but this strays way too far from the field considering what they could of used.
The only saving grace is somewhere down the line we might get a second steelbook (think of Thor/Captain America which both had HMV exclusives then eventually got re-released)
Sure, it might mean recycling the amaray artwork and we might not see any special treatment regarding the finish, but at least then it will look like it belongs in the Marvel collection amongst the other steelbooks.

this is what i mean, proof you've missed the point.

it's not meant to be his walkman, its A walkman, the walkman doesn't matter. the most significant part of the cover is the awesome mix tape. it's the SOUL of the film.

you're thinking very one dimensionally about the film...shocking i know, which is what i was saying, a reason you and others don't appreciate it. the makers of the film wouldn't see the film like you do. it's like watching princess mononoke and only seeing bright pretty pictures. my memories of the film isn't the fighting, or action, its the soul of the film i recall.

quill is easily the main character, and main focus in the film. he is what luke skywalker is to the original star wars trilogy you can have an ensemble with a main character. you may love groot more but you cant deny the fact the film is centrally about quill.

the simple fact is, the people who don't like it dont matter. its not made for them. i'll tell you who loves this art, james gun. & thats all that matters. this image sums up what the film is...to it's creator. the art resonates with him, & it resonates with me, & thousands of others like the film does.

and that is the point you missed...and that's why the standard edition exists for those who don't like it.
