I thought kimchi will put what you want them to on the customs form? Excuse me if I'm wrong on that though - would be interested to know either way.
Yes you are right kimchi allow you to put your own amount in either merchandise or gift option. To be honest I can't remember what amount I put in the gift option so I may be wrong about my customs fees, I'm just looking at worst case scenario.
I wouldn't pay for EMS shipping again that's definite.

That doesn't seem fair at all, or the right way way of 'declaring' it for customs. I hope for your sake they sort something out for you. I'd be pretty annoyed if I was in your shoes.

Great thread though, very quickly and easily managed to find out about importing limits and how much it would cost me overall :)

Amazon has asked me to contact UPS to return to sender which is what I am going to do. :)

What's betting it works out more expensive for most things?

From experience anything touted as new & improved is generally worse and more expensive :(

The new pricing Wallchart (sounds ominous doesn't it !!) is available here, other prices at www.royalmail.com/international.

Only saving grace imo is the introduction of International Tracked & Signed which is what Airsure should always have been to start with. Also interesting is approx 10% discount Account houlders or Franking service gets.

fyi 3 Steels (up to 750 gm) to US will cost £9.90 today and £10.15 when new tariff comes in. That is for ordinary Airmail.

Have you ever put a low amount on the packaging? I am looking to buy and want to know if its safe to put a lower amount to avoid customs? Thanks :)

My last Kimchi purchase I put $15.00 merchandise & used K-Packet shipping arrived in 9 days to UK no customs.
Think I chose the same for Amelie Steelbook which is on it's way, currently at Incheon according to tracking so fingers crossed no customs.

That's not quite right

If the item costs £15.00 or less (not including the P&P) then it's is customs free, if it's over £15.00 you pay 20% VAT on the total cost of the item cost plus the cost of the P&P

Then you almost certainly got the courier/Royal Mail ransom (admin) fee, the Royal Mail current fee is £8.00, the courier fees vary and can be a lot more.
I got stung by this when my order came to £15.50 and received the dreaded grey card from Royal Mail.

My own fault entirely as I ordered 2 items together from the same seller when I should have ordered them seperately.

Kimchi lets you add that information yourself?
That's interesting, I've never ordered anything from them as I thought that once it hits the UK I would have the extra duty/tax to pay.
Does this work every time or does it ever get stopped?

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know if BarnesandNobles are customs friendly nowadays based upon your experience from importing Criterion releases?
Straight from their website:

Customs/Import Duties and Local Delivery
On International orders, customs and import duties are applied once the shipment reaches its destination. These charges are the responsibility of the recipient of your order and will vary from country to country. Contact your local customs office for details.

Kimchi lets you put down items as gift/s or your own price on the declaration and an invoice inside the parcel as well, with the same value, just incase customs starts snooping inside. Personally I go with a import fee below 20 dollars and pick the option for the invoice to show the same price too.

germany is beautiful in getting money... you pay 19% from 22€-150€ and over 150€ you have to pay like this:

schema_abgabenerhebung_zolltarif2.jpg

this really pissing me off

Come on, people. In Brazil you pay a 60% import fee over the item price plus shipping costs and another 18% over this total amount in some states.

In theory, the duty free limit is $50. In real life, when the customs people say your $5 item is actually worthy $300, $300 it is. Of course that you can protest about that...and have them take 3 months to re-inspect the item, take a look at all the invoices, receipts and credit card bill you sent them stating "$5" and still say: "ok, it's worth $220". :banghead:
