I think they go a little easier on you if it's a gift. £135+ comes to mind. So if it's that much or more you will pay customs. Someone else will need to clarify this, i'm not much use here.

Cheers I'm more bothered of them opening them and being damage EEK!

As he marked them as DVD's but who bubble wraps them and boxes DVD's?
They probably think its something else :ohno:

Yeah they can open it up,ive had a couple of my packages opened up but they only ever ripped the bubblewrap slightly to see whats inside.

Oh god £123 down the pan....NO MORE INTERNATIONAL BUYING FROM ME EVER ......unless it's a amazon.eu country

Where's that NOOSE:ugh:

I've actually seen UK members order japan goods to USA Members and then reshipped ... as that way they avoided custom fees. We dont get charged customs unless you order an insane amount. (group buys)

Yup, certainly second that approach. Also shipping is cheaper to US than UK. Even if it has a low-ish value declared and you still get a VAT charge it'll be a lot less than the direct route.

I've had packages with goods from Australia (yes, the JB HiFi Mob) valued at £135 and didn't get hit by Customs, next day had a £20 Steel from Amazon Canada and HMRC hit me with minute VAT charge but the regular Rip-off Mail charge add another £8. Don't forget VAT is levied on the postal charges which can be just enough to tip the scales.

Well Googled my situation and the handling charge is now £13.50 a lot of people have challenged it though as you have already paid shipping the VAT can't be avoided ;(.

I never messaged the seller to put a low value on the item only pack them well.

Is there a chance they won't open the item and I don't get charged?

Just paranoid of them opening and dropping them, the metal slip alone cost £60 that's the most I've spent on one steel so it will be cherished........the charges I can live with lesson learnt if the SCUM damage them different story.

I've ordered stuff from the USA in the past valued $100+ on the package and it has not been stung by customs. Other times it has though. Hopefully the gift may give you some leeway. As for opening, I've never had a parcel opened and checked.
It is a pain when you do get hit though. What makes me laugh the most is the handling fee by Royal Mail, quite the practical joke.

Yes to right mate I've already paid for EMS shipping EEK!

Makes me laugh it says express 24.............. 24 weeks more like:ohno:

A uk buyer already received his slip 2 days ago he paid peanuts for his as well :(

Just my luck fingers crossed they arrive safe and sound

Anything worth over £15 is eligible for a 20% VAT (Gifts are £40 and over), then its £135 and over for import duty. Royal Mail charge £8 handling and administration fee, Parcelforce charge £12 (which I've been hit with :() and as far as I know I think DHL is £5 not 100% though. Best tip if you order from Amazon outside the EU you could avoid the handling fee by pre paying customs. However could be a big problemo for us if this referendum goes ahead and we leave the EU we could face customs charges on everything, no more willy nilly buying from amazon.de and .fr

Hi Bud,

so as long as its Marked "Gift" you can receive Declared Value of up to 40 GBP , with out being Punished by UK Government ??

wonder what USA is ?, as I get very conflicting answers from different guys ??

As others have suggested, you're probably going to get hit for 20% of the value plus shipping, because the sender put the full value on the customs declaration. You might get away with no charges but if HMRC are on the ball you'll probably get hit for something in the region of £25-30 in additional charges. You'll also be kept waiting while Parcelforce raises an invoice for those charges, during which time the parcel will sit in one of their depots for a day or so.

I'd be very surprised if Customs bothered opening the package though. No need when the sender has been so helpful in telling them what they need to charge! :squint:

My last EMS package was stuck in Customs for 10 days, so you've hardly been kept waiting long at all so far. With a bit of luck it'll be in your hands next week. ;)

EMS = expect more surprises ;(

EMS use to be a good service used it when buying stuff from Japan a few years ago.

Thank god I used normal shipping for my order from kimchi a while ago went through normal mail got that in 10 days.

Regarding them opening it they might be suspicious though with it being marked 2 DVDs but the packaging is in a big box. They xray things anyway wouldn't the metal trigger something or raise concern?
