To be fair I think if there were major problems with the disc it would have been all over the forums by now. People aren't slow about major issues with disc pressings.

Those pictures are great and actually make both versions collectors items as they are so different. Each excellent in their own way

They are both nice indeed, but the new one is definately better looking, i shall be keeping both regardless :)

Yup, me too - all credit to Royal Mail / Zavvi for the next day delivery  I suppose if packages from HMV can be next day then why not from Zavvi . . .

Extremely elegant steelbook (unlike clunky previous) and like almost everything about it . . .
- The best part being the semi-circular metallic sheen under the craft representing the light emitting from it created by the selective removal of the white base coat layer in that section and best seen when you tilt the steel slightly for the ambient light to hit it. An oil slick with its rainbow colours is possibly the best way to describe the effect as in "iridescent".

RE: Steelbook itself - deep, rich "Space" colouring reminiscent of other equally good "Space" steelbooks such as CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, GRAVITY or STARGATE.

RE: partial slip - as elegant as the steel itself in the same deep, rich blue colouring with just those two BBFC stamps to slightly spoil the effect.

RE: AUDIO: Info I'm picking up is that this is 5.1 and not the 7.1 listed on the slip . . . with the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 reserved for the upcoming 4K ULTRA HD edition.

A couple of changes I would have made - one tiny the other less so:-
1) Omitted the silver printed "TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY EDITION" on the front or printed it in a different colour so that it doesn't stand out but that's so minor it's hardly worth mentioning.
2) De-bossed the "ID4" bit of the title even though it does have a very cool effect as it is and not single colour blocked.

All in all: an 8/10 steelbook.

Im watching the extended edition now from this steelbook, i tell you what the new transfer is spectacular. Its definatley been rescanned in 4K, i can only imagine how the UHD would look but for now this looks amazing and is definatley worth the upgrade from the dvd or the previous bluray.

Thanks. I was just coming on here to ask if there's any noticeable difference between this version and the original. So you think it's much improved then? Sometimes there can be very little difference in 4K remasters. But it sounds like this is one of the better ones :)

It has a really crisp, sharp picture, the last bluray was really soft with in certain spots oversaturated colors. The color's on this transfer are very natural which is a huge plus. The only softness is on some of the CGI scene's showing the ship coming through the clouds but thats just the movies age.

It honestly looks like it could have been filmed this year, im really impressed with the transfer for a 20 year old movie.

That's because its' a 35mm film and not a digital film. I would be amazed if the 4K release didn't blow away all the other 4k releases to date. I love the irony that a film made 20 years ago will produce a vastly superior 4k pressing and the likes of Ben Hur from 1959 would be the ultimate in 4k pressings......

Ben Hur 50th Anniversary was 8K scan on the movie (finished at 6K)

Ben Hur It's a perfect Blu-ray restoration
I have the 50th Anniversary Box Set and also the steelbook and Diamond Luxe Edition
It's possible they will release a 4K UHD Blu-ray of Ben Hur soon considering they already have a restored master done

I should have delivery tomorrow of Independence Day Steelbook but will have to wait until next weekend to watch 4K restored extended cut as I'm working nights Mon-Thur

I found that the difference between the previous blu-ray release and this one was noticeable almost instantly, and that it really is quite a big difference, unlike some as you mention.
