I really like the input and all the ideas presented here. From my point of view there is no such a thing as a crazy suggestion and every idea we have should be respected and analysed.

From a business perspective we don’t know what’s Kimchi budget for a service improvement or upgrade at the moment. As far as I know Kimchi is one man shop and as every successful business is now facing the challenge of growing.

The idea of having a Collectors Club is pretty good however involves a new design of the current business model that Tony might not be keen to drive. The complexity of managing a subscribed service or Club isn’t as simple as it sounds. In order to hold bank/credit card details a website must comply and obey local regulations. Most of the Asian websites charge upfront because their system does not support the ‘pre-order’ model where your order is linked to your CC/Bank details only charging when the product gets shipped. It’s a big responsibility to store personal information, and even more so when the information is Bank/CC details. To support the Club model a secure system to manage every single membership from end to end will be required.

From the technical point of view Kimchi could adopt an elastic load balancing technology where the system automatically distributes the traffic across multiples Servers, scaling up the infrastructure to meet a high demand period, bringing back the basic configuration once the demand goes back to normal.

We need to understand that Kimchi won’t have a high demand on their website 24/7/365 so would be a waste of investment having all their Server/Services/Website fully upgraded to support 12 days a year of steelbook frenzy.

Amazon (AWS) has this service in their portfolio and it’s surprisingly cheap, but once again that’s a business decision and must be driven by Tony.

Just want make clear I don’t work for Amazon, but my company is also growing way ahead of the curve, and we are analysing many options in the market including AWS.

Very well thought out post and you made quite a few valid points. I really liked your sentence that referenced elastic load balancing tech.

I've been one of those that have complained about the need for Tony to upgrade Kimchi's servers, but you're absolutely right about it not being 100% necessary due to the fact that they're only overwhelmed and inundated during the release of their exclusives. Financially it doesn't make sense to go dark and spend the necessary money for the upgrades just to accommodate a handful of releases. I knew that, but the selfish side of me disagreed. :)

Just had an idea. What if there was group buy hubs for each country. What I mean it that like old blufan GB, we could get Kimichi to send bulk to certain countries and then hubs send them out. Solves Kimichi having to individually send out so many copies and will make it easier for HDN to get a copy each. Would give Hub guy quite a lot a work but probably no more than the old blufans.

Eg.

Mini Country specific group buy: Canada, US, England, Europe & ROW.

Have specific sign up limit but also limitied to say 100-150 each

Then after sign up HDN could be given to Tony at Kimchi and Kimichi approx 750 steels and only sending to a few guys.

Just an idea but HDN & Kimchi have always had great commutation so could work.

I think it should be 1 per customer. I get that some people will get 2 to get a friend one but sadly a lot of people's friends are called eBay. And a lot will get 2 to keep 1 sealed but a lot of people will miss out on this even if on a 4k print run. I don't think it's fair that copies will sit on a shelf unopened, unloved and gathering dust when people would give their left nut for a copy. If you want a sealed one keep your own copy sealed, if you want to open then give the others the satisfaction of opening too. A release like this needs the love spread about

Not as much love as someone who doesn't have a copy that would open it and appreciate the artwork and watch the movie

You can't say that someone who decides to open their steels loves theirs more than someone who doesn't. Many people who choose to leave them sealed have their reasons, and probably have the amaray to watch when the mood hits them. It's rather presumptuous to assume that those who choose to open their steels "love" them more than those who keep them sealed.

I have to agree with @troll2fan. Though the important thing is to understand different people enjoy their collections in diverse ways. Some people like to open them right away, others at a later date, while others keep them sealed while under their possession. One way of collecting is not better than the other, we are all part of this forum because we share a hobby in common ;) I open some of my steels, while keeping others closed. I love them all the same!

I'm comparing a persons second copy to a persons only copy. If you want to keep it sealed that's fine. My point was if I had 2 copies, 1 open and one sealed I'd feel bad seeing people with no copy at all. Don't see my respect for other collectors as a misunderstanding of collecting. If it wasn't for people's respect for others collections we wouldn't have people like Choi hosting group buys and helping people who have no other means

I'm out of thanks, but you hit the nail on the head. To each his/her own.

Sorry if I misunderstood what you were saying. If that were the case, and IF I bought two copies of a title then I'd happily trade or sell my sealed copy to a fellow member who missed out, but I NEVER buy two of the same copy. ;)

I think maybe I worded it wrong, I was up late last night lol my point was this is not like most releases. It could have instant grail status, it's price will skyrocket, miss this and you're gonna pay a hefty price, I just think 1 per customer would be best to everyone getting a fair chance of a copy

Just lose 2 letters and you are nearly round to my way of thinking ;)

I keep the majority of mine sealed and look after them like they are my kids :p. Open or sealed is a debate for elsewhere on the forum, but imo both are right. It just depends on the free thinking individual who manages to get a copy.

To be clear though, sealed does not = unloved. Or worse as others sometimes presume.

As Troll says, to each their own

I understand and can appreciate your opinion but when it comes down to it, it's first come, first served. It's up to each retailer to put restrictions on the amount of copies you can buy of something no matter what we're talking about.
Kimchi is being more than fair by putting some restrictions on the amount of copies you can purchase, Choi and kimchi let us know exactly when it goes live and even lists several timezones to help the HDN members know when to sit in front of the computer and hit F5 over and over again until the item in question goes live.
Life isn't always fair. You just have to make the best out of it. :)

Distinct lack of understanding of collecting in that post. Unopened does not equal unloved

Couldn't agree more. I have a good amount of opened and unopened steelies and none are more or less loved than another. Some collectors pick up that mint copy to keep pristine and unbox another. You can't assume a person that gets 2 is always reselling. Some comic books I buy 2 of because one gets bagged and the other I read the **** out of it
