So... Does the guy just want credit for the design and to possibly design more Steelbooks in the future? That's what I take away from the last paragraph.

Yes for the credit on the design...Doesn't mean $$$ though...If Nova want to, that's their decision...But that would mean admitting they lifted...

I am not accusing anyone of stealing!
Of course I have no copyrights on original posters.... I know it!
This is mainly about the basic idea. I feel disappointed for that.

I love make own design ... I want to publish my ideas for steelbook designs.

The basic idea is not new...I suggest to do something which is not in the public domain and watermark it as your creation...

Having said that we could also argue that the guy who did the mockup himself copy pasted the design and only created the template. So this becomes a chicken egg situation.
If this is from official poster art, then I think its fair game.

If it is not, then of course, the guy who designed it has every reason to feel annoyed.

This is the problem right here. I understand your situation @Wyrrgy, but the fact is you didn't create original artwork and just arranged already existing artwork owned by the studio into a fan mockup. So even if the designer of the Nova fullslip really did steal your design, you can't do anything about it because you did not create and are not the owner of the assets you used.

He created 2 Fan Artwork designs of the steelbook back in Nov 2014

He also did some other Fan Artwork Steelbooks designs some are very good

The images though are already from the Film Studio Artwork and not original artwork so I'm sure NovaMedia are Ok with using these images as the rights are with the film studio as they come from the film posters

I posted almost identical - (now deleted post :) )

I agree, they are studio agreed artwork, so Nova will be fine. Had the guy used a unique design, then fair enough. It is quite easy to almost duplicate such a basic design, with the front and back designs tying up nicely with one another.

I see the guys point, but legally, not a leg to stand on.

On a positive note, some excellent designs for steelbooks.

@dfoles I believe so. He mentioned his dream is to design packaging art professionally, and even though it's not his original art --it's no doubt that he put the concept together first. It would be cool for the Novamedia staff to give him some credit. @zerox39 of Future Shop had no problems thanking @Snollygoster for his design of the First Blood (Rambo) Mondo x Steelbook that led to it being created. Novamedia, stay classy! ;)

When you use Film poster artwork on your own design you don't have any rights to the design as the artwork rights are with the film studio and the official poster designer

The images he used the rights belong to the film studio and the artist who created the film posters for the film studio

Fan Artwork can be nice but if you use licenced copyright images you cant claim any rights to a design you create unless you were asked to do so by the rights holder the film studio

That's the thing. Nova are pretty much denying they based their design on @Wyrrgy's. Running their statement through a whole bunch of different translators, it seems that according to Nova, the pre-existing concept was only brought to their attention after they finalised the design and it was approved. Also, it looks like they weren't actually going to comment on the situation but there was a lot of fuss about this on DVDPRIME (South Korean HDN if you will... or South Korean BluFans which is probably more accurate) that it forced them to make a statement.

@Wyrrgy We understand where you're coming. Just take this as confirmation of your talent and that your designs are as worthy as you believe. Some things may have been lost in translation but both parties made valid points and in one way or another both parties led to this amazing edition happening! Thank you Václav, and Thank you Novamedia! :)

I understand ... Thanks guys...
Basically, I am pleased !!!

While I do not have copyrights, I do not want someone to come and take my idea ... it hurts ... I understand that he has the copyright! ... But still it hurts!

I want Publish my ideas! This is my dream!
I want someone came to me ...
Said "Your job ... Your ideas ... are GOOD ... Come Work with us !!!

That's what I want!
It's my dream.

Unfortunately the Studios and the directors have chosen to spoil the vision and passion of true designers by selecting substandard artwork via competition.[emoji27]
Is this post not meant for Whiplash as there was no competition artwork design for John Wick

I'm wondering if the fullslip was pulled temporarily until this artwork controversy is sorted. Does look like Novamedia are ok with this though.
I doubt that its more just likely its sold out
The Steelbook design is using the film poster images
The images used are property of the film studio and its them who would have approved the steelbook design

This would have been approved before made available to purchase

The Fan Artwork created has no legal claim to the design by using artwork that's property of the film studio and if you do so they can use your design if they want to as the images they hold the rights to

When you create Fan Artwork you cant use licenced images and claim any rights to a design nor can you sell the design without getting permission to do so

Its always best if you want to create Fan Artwork that's it original artwork and not using already licenced images
