Blu-ray in not true 2k and UHD isn't true 4k but UHD sourced from a 2k will still look better than the 1080p Blu-ray. However for normal folks wouldn't even bother.

How? It's virtually the same upscale either way. BD is 1980×1080, "true" 2k is defined as 2048×1080. There's no reason for the resulting 2160p upscales to look any different except for the HDR aspect.

Wrong. With HDR, you get more accurate colours and highlights which you won't with SDR. It is not only about the resolution it is about how HDR is implemented during the process.
