LittleBigPlanet, abbreviated to LBP and developed under the title The Next Big Thing, is a puzzle platformer and user-generated content video game for the PlayStation 3, first announced on 7 March 2007, by Phil Harrison at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California. It is developed by Media Molecule, a British company founded in part by Rag Doll Kung Fu creator Mark Healey, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

The game revolves around the player's control of small avatars, known as Sackboys or Sackgirls owing to their appearance, in a variety of platforming scenarios. Though the game features a set of pre-built levels for players to explore, of equal importance is the game's customisable nature, from altering the player's character and personal space, to building entirely new objects and levels, and then sharing and playing them online as part of the LittleBigPlanet community.

Originally intended for a release in mid-to-late October, a last-minute delay involving a licensed song in the game's soundtrack delayed the game's release worldwide. It was released in North America and Japan at the end of October 2008, and in Europe at the beginning of November 2008. Seen as an important title for Sony and the PlayStation 3, the game received an overwhelmingly positive reaction from critics, who praised the game's presentation including its graphics, physics and audio, as well as its gameplay and large array of customisable and online features, including its scope and future potential based on user-created content; minor criticism was reserved for some specific elements of the gameplay mechanics and level creation facilities.

Community Levels

HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation Contest Update:

As part of our collaborative effort with HASTAC and the MacArthur Foundation to encourage students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math in new and revolutionary ways, we thought you’d enjoy checking out the latest entry for the “Game Changer’s” category. This nifty community creation was submitted by the same LBP community members that made the popular “LittleBigContra” levels. It’s titled, “To the Moon and Beyond,” and to announce their project, they’ve released a trailer to give us all an insight of what’s to come:

PSN member gevurah22 has another great level to share with the LittleBigPlanet community. He’s just finished a proper sequel to “Azure Palace” but this time, with water levels! The first part is called: “Knights of the Azure Palace – Part 1.” Check out the trailer here.

Workshop of the Week

4370569371_1ba9a3a94e_m.jpg

Every month, the LittleBigWorkshop forums hold a themed level create contest, and the winner is bestowed with the ultimate desirable, the one and only Rare PrizeCrown. There are still two weeks left to enter February’s contest, which is themed around Valentine’s Day, and requires entrants to build a two player co-op level. And even if you don’t win, what could be more fun than sacking about with your Valentine?

Not to worry though, if you want more time to build something SackTastic, the contest will start all over again on March 1 with a new theme, and again every month after that.

Sackboy on the ‘net

Over on LittleBigPlanet.com they’ve posted some great concept art that went into the making of LBP. Below are just a few of our favorites, click on the pics to visit the full gallery and enjoy!

You can get all five individual character costumes for SackBoy, but you’ll want to be sure to pick up the Costume Kit that not only includes all five costumes, but also a selection of retro stickers based on the classic Sonic the Hedgehog adventures. This way you can make your own Sonic levels with Sonic style!

Little Big Planet 2 is coming!!

LittleBigPlanet 2 Confirmed
Move support for PlayStation 3 sequel.
by Martin Robinson, IGN UK
UK, March 23, 2010 - In what seems to be a record day for big announcements made in underwhelming ways, Sony has confirmed the existence of LittleBigPlanet 2, with a company representative confirming that the game will support the Move controller.

News comes via Tweakers.net (thanks Eurogamer), with a Sony Benelux employee revealing that motion control would be a part of the game. Sony recently bought Media Molecule, who previously worked on the exceptionally well received original game.

IGN has approached Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for official confirmation.

I think it could be a fun game with Move. What do you guys think?

if it's anything like the demo they showed at GDC it'll just be the 2nd player that uses the move controller and it'll only be limited.

I don't think I'd want to play the whole game on the move... but creating a level could be A LOT better with it.

[UPDATE]Rumor: LittleBigPlanet 2 in works, supports Move

UPDATE:

False alarm, it seems. Sony Europe has since issued the following comment during an interview with Connected Consoles:

“As demonstrated recently at GDC, LittleBigPlanet has been shown as an example of how an existing game could benefit from PlayStation Move Motion Controller support. This is not a confirmation of LittleBigPlanet 2, and we do not have any announcements to make about the LittleBigPlanet franchise.”

ORIGINAL ARTICLE:

Did you enjoy LittleBigPlanet? Of course you did. Fancy a sequel? Yes? Well, if a report filed on Dutch website tweakers is anything to go by, you could be in luck – apparently, LittleBigPlanet 2 is in the works and will supposedly incorporate PlayStation Move functionality.

Check out the translation below, courtesy of the folks at VG247. The news itself comes from the mouth of a Sony marketing boss in Benelux, who confirmed the existence of the Media Molecule sequel.

"In an earlier video appeared online, talk Folkert Langeveld of Sony Computer Entertainment Benelux Move on the PlayStation and the strategy that Sony uses for the motion controller as well as possible in the market to turn. He mentions some titles here that will be suitable for Move.

Most notable is the decision of the marketer that Little Big Planet 2 will support the Move. Sony has not been hurried on a sequel to the platform game from Media Molecule. The ruling appears to indicate that Langeveld Little Big Planet 2 already in development. Sony took earlier this year on development studio Media Molecule. They were responsible for the first part of Little Big Planet."
