How many people open their Steelbooks when they buy them or do you just leave them sealed.

So far i have 13 Steelbooks and have opened 3 i opened Angels and Demons,Inglorious Bastards and District 9.

I fear if i open my pirates and nightmare before christmas ones i will have to modify them to be able to put the discs in and not have them in a sleeve

open them unless you intend to sell or trade them , i recently bought a copy of future shop ironman sealed , i opened it as i intend on keeping it

I probably wouldn't open it if I knew it was OOP.

All new releases where I have yet to see the film I will open no matter what.

Its hard to predict what will be OOP and then theres the re-release issue.

I collect for personal viewing and having a collectable case is an added bonus. I don't ever plan to resell or trade the ones that I like. Now mind you I have a few that I bought just for trading purposes and that's it and I don't open those for obvious reasons. On one occasion I did buy The Green Lantern and kept it sealed because I didn't like it because it was a G1 and so I traded it.

More than half the beauty of a steel book resides on the back and in the inside...to not open means you have a glorified front cover...which often is obscured by some sort of card stock anyways. What's the point of owning it if you can't even revel in all it's beauty?

This whole idea of resale value gets way out of hand sometimes.

Some people collect lint!......... to each his own.

It is true I have steels I keep sealed, but that is mostly because I started collecting late and since I am a movie person already own the movies in regular editions. But I say open em, you only live once.

And realistically for most people this is a hobby not a profession. Most people are not going to make money from buying and selling these that it will significantly change their lives. Enjoy the hobby

Even if you intend on keeping it, it's still a dumb move to open it. You instantly lost hundreds of dollars by doing that. I hope looking at the inside art was worth it.

One thing I do when I get new steels ... unless I havent alraedy seen the art online ... I keep it sealed ... (unless its a new release, cause I wanna watch the movie) but the catalog titles I keep sealed until I want to watch the movie ... then by that time, I make a more sound decision. Often times its months later and the movie is still in stock or didnt sky rocket in value... so I open. But I would have to say probably 70% of my collection is sealed. I really only have one steel sealed that I havent seen the movie. The rest I have another copy or just am waiting till the day that I want to watch it.

I'm the same..I look at the art work online if I know it's going to go up in value like iron man. It looks like Batman Begins ( japan version ) is heading that way. I can think of 25 Steels I would never open! It's like having an autographed jersey of Aaron Rodgers ( packer fan sorry) and wearing it to a football game... People would call me crazy! And I have no intention of selling it... Well it's the same as OOP steels isn't it?

Just open 'em I say. A rare steelbook will be rare and sought after no matter what. Yes, it will hold a higher value sealed BUT it will still hold a high value opened if you find the right buyer.

I say this because there are many people that keep/want them sealed and there are others that like them open. Personally, I prefer to buy opened steels (when I buy used) as then you know whats lurking behind the backing (I open all mine).

I've seen loads of opened Iron Man FS and Rambo's going for hundreds, and some of those weren't even mint!

A smart buyer here. :) I like buying open copies as well... you get to see whats really hiding behind the curtain. ;)

I'm bringing this up because I saw a couple pictures of opened Steelbooks that Recently became OOP.. If you didn't have doubles and you knew that your steelbook could SKYROCKET like Iron Man, would you fall into Temptation and rip that sucker open? or would you Keep it safe and just buy the Regular Blu ray version of the movie? :wtf:

Leave it sealed, you can put your kids through college. :)

Well said that man! I actually love opening mine to take a peak and they always get put back in re-sealable poly bags to keep them fresh (and yes I do own 3 of the Japanese wave and they're all open)
I think it just comes down to why you buy them, I buy them for me so why would I want something that just sits on a shelf unable to be watched :D

I always open mine. You can't describe a sealed item as mint (despite what some collectors will say) because you never know what's hiding behind those backing sheets and banners. A mint, open copy will still fetch good money anyway, so I say open them and enjoy them. In a few years time, they could end up like DVD steels and anyone who kept their rare steels sealed will regret not enjoying them.

I see that you're still upset after I posted that unsealed Batman Begins steelbook :hilarious:

Kidding aside, I think there just are different kind of collectors, some prefer them sealed and some unsealed. I think it's just a matter of taste and intention (value etc).

For me it's a private collection. I'm not in the market of selling the things I collect. I even have most of the DVD LE's from when that format was popular, some of them still holds great value.

I remember there was this crazy period where everyone was selling their DVD LE's for kind of low prices when blu-ray hit. Now I see those prices has gone up again.

if your not into this to make money then i think the smart move is to open and enjoy, ive seen people say they will never sell there steels and then they mention they wont open high value ones. How does that make sence if your never going to sell them? , anyways i open my steels to watch them (unless bought to resell) and ive noticed a few times that some of the steels i think are mint are not as once ive opened them theres a dent or a scratch behind the backing card so people who own FS iron man dont be so sure your have a minty sealed one lol. :naughty:

this is my personal theory around deciding whether i should open OOP steelbooks or keep them sealed

1. almost all of my steelbooks are open so i can enjoy them.

2. i double dip on the ones i think will go OOP for future trading which is not a lot of time so i can open my copy.

3. if i only get hold of one copy before it went OOP i will keep it sealed and buy the standard blu ray instead

it is a hobby for me and not a business but if you can sell the ones that go OOP for more money then you can recycle the funds to invest in future releases. :oohyeah:
