How many people open their Steelbooks when they buy them or do you just leave them sealed.

So far i have 13 Steelbooks and have opened 3 i opened Angels and Demons,Inglorious Bastards and District 9.

I fear if i open my pirates and nightmare before christmas ones i will have to modify them to be able to put the discs in and not have them in a sleeve

98% of my steelbooks are sealed.

If I like a movie, I'll buy the regular blu-ray disc to open and watch and buy the steelbook of it but keep it sealed.

I open about half, most of the time it's not even to watch the movie. If it cost me less than £20 is easy to open :) If it costs £10 (the next wave of play ex) I buy 2 copies :)

I've only opened a handful of OOP steels but I intend on keeping them for ever. Other stuff like the FS Harry Potters I can't birng myself to open as I can see them becoming even more saught after in the future and i could happily live with 7.1 & 7.2 only

All my Steelbooks are open and in pristine condition.

I'll never understand the point of buying something and never opening it. Or buying something twice but keeping one sealed. What a waste of money (in my humble opinion) double dipping on countless titles when that money would go towards extending my overall collection instead. Also, I could never buy a Steelbook and not admire the internal (and outer) artwork in the flesh!

Also, there's something sinister about people buying two of something 'incase it goes up in value'. Some collectors genuinely want these items and may not be able to afford them straight away but find them sold out on launch day because some buyers just buy multiple copies to sell on. And anyway it's impossible to know which titles will become sought after so it's a gamble really.

Anyway, that's just me. I never heard of buying 2 copies of a film and keeping one sealed before I came on this forum. I think it's a bit extreme to be honest. Especially with the current economic climate.

And my wife thinks I'M crazy buying one copy to watch and keep!! :hilarious:

Open it or keep sealed

I am fairly new to collecting BR - SB's (wish I had started earlier with some of the exclusives). For the most part, I am opening those that arrive with the outer plastic torn, a dent, or if I think there could be another problem - loose disc, etc.:ohno:

I usually already own the dvd or blu-ray and will use that to watch and keep the SB as strictly a collectible. If I only own one period, such as the War of the Arrows that I just ordered as a BR - SB, then I will probably open and watch it.

I open all mine then put them back in re sealable plastic covers most of the time you can never tell whether theres hidden dents under the card etc (ive found a few) so calling sealed ones 'mint' doesnt really work for me ;)

Demand on the secondary market is higher for sealed / new collectables (not just steelbooks). It's unavoidable. I personally prefer to trade for open items, but I know I'm in a minority.

TBH the gamble, hunt, arranging trades, private sales etc all play a part in the attraction of collecting, for me at least.

Yup! It's all down to individual preferences/habits isn't it?

I wonder who was the first to come up with the idea of keeping a copy sealed though? :p

Hate to answer this one. I now have over 200 blu ray steelbooks and I haven't opened any of them that came sealed.

I was planning on opening them all. I have some that I've purchased open though.

That's why you need 2 sets of the Harry potter steels :D

You're probably right. I should go open one just for the fun of it! I'm nervous though, that if I open one, I'll start opening them all like it's Christmas morning or something.

I have the same problem as you, but you should find a few to open. You deserve it with the insane amount of buying/trading you've been doing.

or you can just open one and re-wrap it so if you feel like you need to open another one just reopen that same one. :D
This will keep your collection nice and sealed.

After a quick count I have 23 open and 27 sealed. Not bad

1 open/2 sealed on the way

7 that will be on the way in the next month or so that are 100% staying sealed

What stops this ... is when you open one and find an imperfection ... Leaves you gutted, so then you dont mind "not knowing" and keeping more sealed. ;)

I've opened a lot lately, for the sole purpose of providing better pics/scans for the collection manager. You can all thank my collection for it. :p Granted, they were all ones I told myself I would open one day anyways.

^ that is so true. There was a period when I opened everything. All was going well until I opened a FS mechanic (even though I have the amray and can't play the region A disc!) then tron.de, both had paint problems.

I then recieved a lot of damaged SB in the mail and was less keen to open anything. I was close to giving up at that stage. I'm still scared to open too many at one time :)

I have never opened any of my steels.. If it's open it stands out and did I mention that irks me? :p I double dip for the amaray, that solves my problem. I have two opened and everytime I look at my collection my eyes are stuck on that section where the two are placed.

It's all down to what each preferences are.

I'm am extremely likely to open a steelbook that is "new" ie recently released that I have not seen before. I will blind buy steelbooks, cause they make the movie look cool. I dont like waiting months to watch a movie i bought if i have the steelbook already. Its when I get older rare titles its very hard for me to open. I started doing this cause I feel a bit ashamed that I own Death Race g2 and have since release date and still have not seen the movie lol.
