How many people open their Steelbooks when they buy them or do you just leave them sealed.

So far i have 13 Steelbooks and have opened 3 i opened Angels and Demons,Inglorious Bastards and District 9.

I fear if i open my pirates and nightmare before christmas ones i will have to modify them to be able to put the discs in and not have them in a sleeve

I open my steelbook. I like to open them, look at it physically and it's just good to enjoy it!

Each to their own, but it would be difficult for me to buy a steel and leave it still sealed. I have no love for people that buy 5 plus copies to sell on at an inflated price.

Fluff it up as much as you want, it's ripping people off. But whilst people consider paying the prices, they will still make money.

Like you I generally open all of mine, but I do have a few sealed that are usually extras but I use those to trade with other members from other countries for something else I want. Now I have really gotten involved in group buys so I really to have a reason to keep them sealed so I think the % open in my collection will go from about 85% to about 98%.

I like to open them all. Don't see the point in keeping them sealed, unless you are minted and got loads of copies to sell for a profit! Also I hate j cards, they should be downsized and put in the steelbook as an insert/ leaflet.

I'm pretty new to collecting but I've been systematically opening each one to rip onto a drive just in case the BDs ever get damaged. Like many others in here, I purchase steels to movies I like. The reason I got into steel/digi books in the first place was because before I'd rather just use a "virtual" copy than an ugly amaray... Now I have an excuse to actually buy the films I like... And that's having something tangible that's worth looking at and admiring. Ripping that shrink wrap off for the first time is an enjoyable experience for me. Even the whole using discs thing is enjoyable (BD menus anyone?). I can't wait to open the gems I have arriving. I've also put in an order for plastic slips, so in my mind, that means problem solved when it comes to any getting damaged on the shelf or general carelessness, and that's good enough for me.

Its funny how you buy a steelbook, you want the 3D version with inside art and all the extras and i nice looking back and inside art, complain when these things are not included then you keep it sealed you cant see the back coz the data sheet is in the way you dont watch the 3D or the extras anyway. I have some sealed but just lately i only buy movies i want to watch so i open them, i bought Lifeforce from Arrow, has great rear art and a ****** data sheet covering it up so to keep it sealed it may as well have a plain silver back, i think all steals should come polly bagged to save me worrying on weather to open it or not.

I can understand steelbook kept sealed if its to sell or trade

What I don't get and I never will understand is why people who buy a steelbook and never open it and keep it and don't plan to sell

Why buy a steelbook and not open it
I buy films to watch and yes i often will buy a different version when released because it has different extras or better picture transfer

I do put my Steelbooks in protective covers to keep them protected

Anyone who buys for example 2 copies of a steelbook with reason of opening one to watch and keep other sealed ?????????
Your paying twice WHY WHY

Again i can fully understand when reason is to trade or sell

But it makes no sense to buy 2 and keep it on a shelf and 50 years later its still unopened

I don't want to offend anyone but unless your mega rich and don't care about money
Its crazy to use your hard earned cash that way its just total wasting money

Buying same film 4-5 times all different artwork again i can understand as there not the same

Why waste your cash on buying 2 copies and only open one of them and keep the other sealed with no plans ever to trade or sell sealed copy just don't make any sense at all

I do not understand anyone buying a steelbook never opening it and not even have any other version to watch
Again i don't want to offend anyone and its not what i want to do

?????why would you buy a steelbook keep it sealed and never plan open it or watch it or sell it or trade it especially if you don't already have the film to watch

Explain to me why as i just don't get it

I open all my steelbooks. Main reason is to see what condition its in. If it has too many scratches/paint chips I'll want to buy it again for a better copy. I also like to watch the movies I buy :p I don't buy them to sell/trade anyways so no point in keeping them sealed. Plus steelbooks look damn sexy when opened right? :D

About 70% of my SteelBooks are sealed. I know I should open them as soon as I buy. Some I have opened long after they sell out at Future Shop only to discover that what looked perfect in shrinkwrap actually had dents, scratches, or paint chips. Its funny what that thin clear plastic can hide.

Hmm strange strange stats indeed. According to the poll, a wopping 62% of you reported that you open your steels. Fair enough, stats are stats. But I got a question. Look in the main picture thread (the one with 1.6 million views). How many do you see opened? How many do you see factory sealed? I don't know, me personally, I see 80-90% factory sealed. Anyone wish to weigh in on this anomaly?

As many of us open their steelbooks and have to change the discs because of the Region or the Audio tracks available, why not opening a thread to offer or trade the discs we don't use. A kind of "I'm looking for "X" movie disc" thread...

I have a big quantity of movie disc that I don't use and I'm personnaly looking for some titles for the cheapest possible cost.

A Steelbook is already quite expensive so if we could help eachother swaping the movie disc we don't use it could be an asset for HDN.

What do you think about?...

i think that's a great idea, i was just looking in the Blu-ray Movies & Release Buzz thread and i don't see any thread for "i'm looking for "X" Blu Ray Release"

like you said there are lots of collectors with spare discs after swapping them for their desired region or version of the movie.

I open all my steels, they look so much better unwrapped. Can't beat the feel of the steel. I have about 40 displayed on stands, the rest are in good quality protectors, I regularly change the one's on display for a 'change of scenery'. Plus too many are not perfect once you remove the J card. This week alone my German Parker steel was returned because of a large scratch behind the J card and my UK JFK was also returned because of a large paint chip, again behind the J card. People who say they have a mint, sealed copy have no way of knowing if that is true, because they cannot see the whole steel. I also watch the movies and tend to only buy films I like and whats the point of inside art and extra features if it's going to remain sealed?

Steelbook collectors

This may sound a daft question but I'm curious, I have around 20 Steelbooks at the minute, some are open, some are not.... Do you guys collect these to open and watch the movie or just collect for the rarity and keep them sealed... I have the play.com world war Z, lol the wife wants to watch it, but I don't want to open it haha....

Hi Postie, It's all about personal choice and why you are collecting steelbooks. I open mine except for rare Asian ones and for most of those it's because I have the film from another country.

I open. Dont see the point in buying these lovely steels and not seeing them properly. Ive seen some people complain that theres no clean back art or its not glossy and then see that they keep all steels sealed. I dont really get that lol. Only benefit of keeping them sealed to me is for the purpose of selling for profit. I'm a collect not a seller. If i sell i'll sell only to collectors at appropriate prices coz i know they will be going to a good home. Zavvi's Pain and gain for example, i changed my mind on the pre order after seeing the movie so sold it for £18 to someone that loves the movie and i know genuinely missed out on it.

World War Z is a lovely steel and a great movie, get that bad boy open i say

Movies that i want to watch i buy a steelbook thats not to expensive that i like and open and watch it, chances are you will get your money back or small lose if you decide to sell it anyway. The regular plastic case releases usually only drop in price so i dont waste my money on them, i figure i may as well just open a cheap steel version, i then try to pick up another sealed one of a more rarer version to keep as a collectors item. Sometimes i end up with a stellbook that i planned on opening but then dont, so i then try and find one thats already open for sale/trade and i dont have to worry about opening it or not. Everyone is different.
