I thought that I'd kick off a thread about this upcoming movie, directed by Guillermo del Toro.

Official Story Synopsis
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

An interesting article describing some of the battle scenes from GeekTyrant here.

Saw it this morning on faux IMAX 3D (sadly no time to drive 2 hrs to full size), but for me it was still worth it given the sheer scale of this film. A very entertaining homage to the roots of monster films, and a pretty cool story overall. Love that Guillermo did this because of his 'fantasy' emphasis. For me the monsters and robots were some of coolest I've seen in a really long time. I hate spoilers and don't read reviews in advance. But if you generally like big, action packed flicks, you may like this one. Visuals to me me were awesome-especially with soundtrack and IMAX tech. Have fun everyone:)

Very awesome movie, better than transformers. third row back in a IMAX 3D theater and it was like I was in it. The usa box office numbers look like us americans would rather see Grown ups 2. sad! I hope it makes good box office numbers overseas.

Just saw it today. Some great effects and action scenes.Although not helped by my local world of cine showing it on their smallest screen
Good rather than great for me,it gets a bit bogged down in the middle section.
But when it does what it does best, big robots fighting monsters

There's something seriously wrong with humanity when Grown Ups 2 is outperforming Pacific Rim at the weekend box office. Apparently watching a deer piss on Adam Sandler is more appealing than giant robots and monsters? Meh, it's hurts my brain just trying to comprehend a logical reason to why the box office is going the way it is.

Pacific Rim was perfect to me. I loved every moment.

I saw this last night in 3D simple amazing film, I like that del toro balances the crazy action with some humanity thrown in, make you care about the people in the story, for eg man of steel just goes like drama for the first half of the film then second half relentless non stop action but pleasing to the eyes none the less. The fighting scenes are choreograph well you can see what is happening compared to transformers where it is just loud noise and metal smashing around and you can not tell who is bad from good and god dam do you get a great feeling from the size of the robots and monsters when they are fighting in the cities, the director did a great job well worth the money I will be going to see it in IMAX tomorrow to get a better experience than the small screen saw it on Friday, people go and see this film 8/10.

I was expecting more fighting scenes and was surprised how short the jaegers lasted except for Gipsy Danger.

I've never seen Idris Elba's acting before but he turned out to be the main highlight for me in this film.

Overall, I liked the film.

I really wanted to like it as i'm a big Del Toro fan but i was left a little disapionted sure the action scenes and effects are great and a great performance by Idris Elba but i did'nt feel any empathy with the other characters and as carpenterfan 78 says the the quieter middle section was bogged down, did anyone else note the similarity of some of the Kaiju to Emerich's Godzillza & elba's rallying call to Bill Pulman's ID4 speech.

Not saying I know exactly why Grown-Ups 2 is more popular than Pacific Rim but Salma Hayek has more sex appeal on the big screen than most robots or monsters :)
