The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

DUALSHOCK 4 adopts the familiar form factor of the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller with some key enhancements:
  • - Motion control is enabled by a new highly sensitive six-axis sensor
  • - Dual analog sticks fine-tuned for better precision plus improved surface materials and shape for more delicate manipulation
  • - L2/R2 buttons on the top of the controller employ a curved design for easier, smoother interaction
  • - A new “Options” button combines the functions of the DUALSHOCK 3’s “Select” and “Start” buttons for operating in-game menus

You can see more images of the new DUALSHOCK 4 controller here.

These are from 3rd party resellers, I haven't seen these anywhere else. I am assuming not many were made originally so these peeps just bought them to resell.

PS4 Firmware 1.70 detailed further

Sony has released further details on some of the features which will arrive in the latest PS4 Firmware update.

According to Sony, firmware version 1.70 will be 'significant' and will include many of the features requested by users.

One of those features will be automatic pre-downloading of pre-ordered games. This will allow you to download a game in time for it's release, a feature you can begin manually or automatically. Apparently there will also be a countdown that starts when the official time of release is announced.

Another, perhaps more interesting addition, is the arrival of ShareFactory, a new and “rich video editor app”, which allows you to take any of your recorded gameplay footage and combine it with other footage, special effects such as filters, transitions and themes; add text, stickers or your own music and even add in picture-in-picture video commentary.

In addition, you’ll also be able to edit your video's length, nominate who you want to share the footage with and more.

ShareFactory videos can be uploaded directly to Facebook, or you can export them to USB and upload them to any sharing site you like, including YouTube.

In addition to the above, the latest update will also remove the HDCP, meaning that you can use external capture devices such as Elgato HD to stream and record longer length gameplay footage.

Update v1.70 has not been dated, but Sony says that it is currently in the final stretch of testing.

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 had sold over 7 million units as of April 6.

In a press release, the company also revealed that PS4 software sales has passed 20.5 million, while more than 135 million shares have been made via the DualShock 4's dedicated share button. There has also been over 4.9 million gameplay broadcasts via Twitch and Ustream, attracting over 90 million viewing sessions.

"The response from the global gaming community for PS4 has been overwhelming and we are truly humbled that gamers are selecting PS4 as their next generation console of choice," said SCE president and group CEO Andrew House.

"The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months."

Sony expects to see a total of at least 120 PS4 games released in 2014. Games mentioned for a 2014 release include Alien: Isolation, Destiny, The Elder Scrolls Online, NBA 2K15, Watch Dogs, Driveclub and The Order 1886. Significant indie releases include N++, GALAK-Z: The Witness, The Dimensional, Transistor, Secret Ponchos, Octodad: Dadliest Catch and Daylight.

How long does it freakin take? :wtf: I got tired of waiting for the update so I went ahead and bought me an Elgato HD and the Monoprice HDMI to DVI converter and I'm already doing captures.

I am curious as to how good the editing software will actually be with this new update. I mean it must be better than the Elgato's editing software because all you can really do with it is cut the portion of the video out that you don't want. You have no option for video/audio effects and transitions like this new update will bring. It does wonderful at capturing HD though.

Sorry Noodles my frustration over the long wait for the update is directed at Sony not at you. :) Thanks

If the update is in the final stages of testing then we're talking a week or two at my best guess. Thanks for the video Noodles. It looks like I may have jumped the gun when I bought Adobe Premiere Pro for editing. With the new update having the new editing software capable of effects and transitions I may not even need Adobe Premiere Pro and that's unfortunate because I've paid for a whole year of it.

I wonder what the compression level will be like for longer videos? The only way to really keep it really low and still maintain decent quality is to use the H.264 codec. I know that with the new update you'll be able to save your captured files to USB but I wonder if we'll be able to save the files to a file server on our local network instead. I mean it seems kind of like an extra step to have to transfer the file to USB and then transfer again to our computer to upload to YT. Even an FTP app would be more feasible. I guess well just have to wait and see what's in store for us with the new update.

This just got posted a few hours ago on Crunch.

PS4 1.7 Firmware Update Release Date Set For Next Week

The PS4 is never short of awesome. With all the latest technologies being fitted into the console, there is no escaping the fact that the Sony PS4 is the most powerful gaming machine to date.

Hardwares aside, Sony’s next move will be looking to roll out the 1.7 firmware update next week. The buzz on this started after PlayStation community manager, Chris Owen, teased that many good announcements are coming next week.

The lad added that some of the news will be about the 1.7 patch update.

Not long later, a moderation specialist from SCEE tweeted that next week is dubbed to be the ‘something for everyone’ week’.

This upcoming 1.7 firmware will bring with it tons of new features and among them are the video editor, ability to save videos and screenshots to a USB drive and the switching off of HDCP so that videos can be captured via HDMI.

Of course, the 1.7 update will be the first of many. Sony made it clear that it won’t restrict the growth of the PS4. Future additions are rumoured to be linkups with Twitch and Ustream.

:oohyeah:

I really hope the update includes, the ability to turn off the controller, ability to change PSN name, and the addition of apps like YouTube.

You can already turn off the controller through settings except it's a pain to get to. Having the flexibility to hold the PS button and having that function there would be real nice though.

I do believe I read that they will impliment a function to either turn on/off the led light on the controller. I'm glad too, as it serves very little purpose besides the ability to drain the battery twice as fast as a PS3 Dual Shock controller.
