With all of the announcements of upcoming movies being planned for 3D over the next few years, one would expect that whether or not an upcoming tentpole movie will be in 3D is going to replace the "PG-13 vs. R" question that most filmmakers tend to get. The latest movie that seems to be going that route is Ridley Scott and 20th Century Fox's planned Alien Prequel.

UK sci-fi site Shadow Locked had a chance to talk with art director Roger Christian who worked on Star Wars and Alien, and they asked him about the direction Scott might take with a prequel, the two of them having worked together on the original movie. Besides dropping the fact that it will be shot in 3D, he hinted at a possible trilogy in the franchise's future.

He told them: "Ridley's doing the next Alien in 3D. Ridley told me some of his ideas when we were here in Toronto. He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped dead one of the greatest horror franchises there's ever been, and it had legs to go on. So I'm hoping he'll revive another three. The world certainly wants it, and the fans want it - everybody."

Christian met with Scott, but hasn't confirmed that he might be involved with the new prequel, reuniting the duo for the first time in over 30 years.

I saw Prometheus last Monday and loved it, I will admit there are a few plot holes here and there but I consider them to be relatively minor. I did, however, get the feeling that studio had messed it about as some of what was on screen didn't feel like like it was approved by Ridley Scott. The editing was a little choppy in places as well.

Prometheus is no Alien but it comes close :).

That's what i meant, it felt rushed in a few places...

Saw this in the IMAX on Saturday and had an absolute blast!
Was there an hour early haven't felt that excited in ages for a film!!
Thought the film was an incredible experience on the IMAX, 3D was stunning and didn't feel tacted on.
I really enjoyed the film too, definitely a film i will think about for months to come!

Its been a while Ive seen such a film like Prometheus, sure it leaves a lot of unanswered questions but i liked that about it, actually spoke about it for an hour on the way home with the other half about how we interpreted the story.

I really cannot see where people get all the hate for this film, i guess its all opinion but at the very least this is a competent sci fi flick. Also about half way through the film could have turned into a classic alien film if they wanted it to go that way, which could be why some people felt left down, i though really like the route they took!

I really do want Ridley to make this a trilogy which would be cool. Also a longer directors cut on blu would be fantastic!

This film is definitely best viewed as a standalone, and it was marketed in the UK as one, the adds only mentioned its from the director of alien and gladiator.

I really want to see this again! This film also made me really excited for the blade runner sequel as imo Ridley has still got it! :D

OT: Did anyone who went to the IMAX get the hobbit trailer? It made me feel sick on the screen that size and seemed really off for some reason, found it hard to focus on the picture :S

And while we're discussing this, the news just came out that even thou Mr. Scott says the theatrical cut is fundamentally the directors cut, there will be a Extended version on Blu-ray with 20 more minutes! Read Here

Interesting. I am still looking forward to seeing any kind of extended cut even if it is not his Director's cut. The extra 20 minutes will hopefully fill in some of the minor holes. I still loved this film though

WARNING: Use the spoiler buttons below at your own risk, a.k.a. thar be spoilers ahead. Note that this is not a comprehensive review of Prometheus. I'll leave that to people more qualified than me to write those reviews.

I saw this last night with 2 friends and thoroughly enjoyed it. Someone here said that David was going to be a real b*****d, and they were so right! Really, Michael Fassbender should be credited for such a great performance. His David is quite chilling.
His conversation with Charlie Halloway before handing him that drink creeped me out! You know that Halloway was going to drink it and you're screaming to him, "No no no, don't!!!". I only hope that Shaw realised that it was David who was ultimately responsible for Halloway's infection and subsequent death.

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm itching for the following:
- Ridley's Director's Cut. There has to be one. The movie raises more questions than it answers.
- a sequel. I want to see where
Noomi Rapace's character goes and what she finds. The Engineers strike me to be a somewhat violent race, especially if they were the ones to create the xenomorph weapon.

Incidentally, Ian Whyte portrayed the last surviving Engineer in the film. Some of you may recall that he played the Predators in the AvP movies. It it any coincidence that the Engineers were roughly the same height / build as the Predators? To tie the Alien franchise together to the Predator franchise, Fox could make a movie depicting these 2 races at war.

What's my overall impressions of Prometheus? It's a good, solid movie. Could Ridley have done a better job? Ask me again after I've seen the Director's Cut.

Standout performances were by Fassbender (obviously), Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron. Theron's portrayal of Meredith Vickers leaves you wondering if there's more to her than meets the eye
, i.e. if she's a synthetic (or a self-aware clone) as well, especially after she addresses Weyland as "Father".
Her one-on-one scenes with David are pretty interesting as well, especially when (to me, at least) it seems as if she's talking down to him.
Is that because she's a more recent synthetic model than David?
Ridley Scott surely wants to mind-frakk with us.

Musically, the orchestral score was beautiful. It didn't get in the way of the movie; rather it complemented it very well.

SFX-wise, it was great. I watched the movie in 3D (my 2 buddies chose to go that route) but honestly, you would have also enjoyed it in 2D. The space-scenes were extremely well done, especially when Prometheus is approaching the moon / planet.

The one quibble (it's not a complaint) that I do have is that Idris Elba's character accepted his
kamikaze mission a bit too easily.

A number of people have panned this effort by Ridley Scott, saying that it was not in the spirit of the first Alien movie. I disagree. I've always had faith in Mr Scott, and he hasn't let me down in the past. He didn't let me down this time.

there's a great interview here--> http://www.movies.com/movie-news/ridley-scott-prometheus-interview/8232

the last question was very interesting to read

Movies.com: You throw religion and spirituality into the equation for Prometheus, though, and it almost acts as a hand grenade. We had heard it was scripted that the Engineers were targeting our planet for destruction because we had crucified one of their representatives, and that Jesus Christ might have been an alien. Was that ever considered?

RS: We definitely did, and then we thought it was a little too on the nose. But if you look at it as an “our children are misbehaving down there” scenario, there are moments where it looks like we’ve gone out of control, running around with armor and skirts, which of course would be the Roman Empire. And they were given a long run. A thousand years before their disintegration actually started to happen. And you can say, “Lets’ send down one more of our emissaries to see if he can stop it. Guess what? They crucified him

Reactions: ripclaw and Walshy
Seen this last Friday...it was a very decent sci-fi flick but I felt there was something missing too.....And I don't like when there's plenty of questions left unanswered.......But overall a very good science fiction movie, hoping for a sequel and nice steelbook release ;)

I saw the movie on Saturday night, good sci-fi flick. ripclaw you make some good points. Here's my thoughts:

So what exactly happens in the first scene? Are we assuming that the engineer sacrificed himself to being creation on planet Earth?

On your theory of Vickers

I do believe she had her own agenda throughout the movie, but after she had intercourse with the captain I kind of dismissed the robot theory I originally had. Otherwise wouldn't the cap notice, moreover, she displayed feelings which is something that even David explained wasn't something he felt.

Vickers clearly displayed anger (it's a form of feeling) throughout the film.

On the engineers:

There was too many questions left unanswered. Specially why they were running away. From what?

The question that I am just dying to find an answer to:

What the hell did David ask the engineer?

Overall the movie was good with awesome cinematography. David Fassbender was incredible.

Wonder whether the 20 minutes that were cut will reveal anything. The deleted scene sounds like a wise move imo. There just has to be a 2nd (or even 3rd) we need the Studio to have the courage of its conviction and carry through with this so that we end up "you-know-where".

Dealing with the final point first, I totally agree, also applies to the other 2 crew members.

Returning to Ripclaw's first point that I have quoted, that would be the kicking off point of any sequel.

The middle point I would find more difficult as
wasn't the point of AvP that conquest of the Xenomorph part of a rite of passage for a Predator, so that would bring in an element of time travel, which would spoil it for me, as they are not yet fully developed into the Xenomorphs we know and love (sic)
.

Horhay, to answer (or at the very least, comment) on your points:

The opening scene
It's not made clear that that is Earth, but we may assume that it is. Yes, the Engineer sacrificed himself. Is that one of the (possible) reasons that Humanity is flawed? That we inherited the life from the death of another? Shouldn't the Engineers have realised that their experiment would go wrong because of this?

Meredith Vickers
I still think that she was a clone, or a better android (a higher-spec model?) than David. Look at the way she talked down to him. Look at most of the scenes where he deferred to her. Even more telling is the way David addressed her as "Ma'am". To me it sounded a lot like "Mom". Ridley, you sneaky director you, you really are mind-frakking with us (or with me, at the very least!). Also, she addressed Weyland as "Father". A red herring?

Or (far-fetched theory here, so please bear with me) was she a daughter / wife of Weyland who died and he had cloned, and she later found out about it? That might explain some of the resentment that she showed just before she called him "Father". Also, her anger towards David when she wanted to know what Weyland said (and David responded, "Try harder") shows me that she was expressing the childlike need for acceptance (does my Father approve, et. al.)

The Engineers
They were running from their creation(s) that went out of control. They did not foresee the extent of the danger from what they had created (or Engineered). It wouldn't be the first time experiments have come back to bite you (quite literally in this case!).

On what David asked you-know-who...
I imagine it would have been something along the lines of "My Master wishes to have immortality. Can you cure him?" Of course, the Engineer flipped when hearing this as they could have deigned early on that Humanity would not (and should not) be granted immortality.

Surfury, to answer your point:
I would justify the war between the Engineers and the Predators as follows: the Engineers accidentally discovered they had created the Alien Xenomorph from their earlier biological weapon experimentation. They then harnessed (read: tamed) the Xenomorphs to be the main weapon in their arsenal when they encountered the Predator race. Remember, the Engineers are just as violent as the Predators (in my perspective, at least). The Predators, realising that they were outclassed unless they could defeat the Xenomorphs, decreed that all prospective Hunters pass the rite of passage of defeating the Aliens.

What do you think?

i think we should assume that

the AVP franchise does not exist in Prometheus / Alien universe. Not anymore anyway

If it did, The Prometheus would be owned by Weyland Yutani, not Weyland Corp

Yutani was shown at the end of AVP-R and Charles Weyland had already died in AVP

I am going to see this again this weekend ripclaw. I pretty much agree with your points. I am going to see if I can dig a little deeper on this Meridith Vickers. I want to see if there was anything I missed the first time.

Good idea, Xanderville. Please pay special attention to her scenes with David.
And also pay attention to the 1 scene with Weyland.
