Hostility Among Gamers Runs Rampant

I've written pieces dedicated to similar topics in the past; the surprisingly hostile attacks between the so-called "fanboys" of our industry is one example, but I've noticed something else lately: it's not just fanboys and haters...seemingly, it's almost everyone involved. What's going on?

If you are a frequenter of various enthusiast forums around the Internet, you will notice something disturbing. There are message boards dedicated to just about anything, ranging from lawnmower racing to hardcore reptile lovers. Obviously, the people who contribute to such places are fans of the subject in question, so one would assume that everyone would - for the most part - get along swimmingly. Such places are often great for inside information, chatting with those who share a passion, etc. However, one notices a marked difference when visiting the standard video game forum, and it doesn't seem to matter where it is or what they're talking about: hostility is the dominant form of expression.

A while back, I attributed this to nothing more than age. When you get a bunch of pre-teens and teens together who can't be seen or heard through a video screen, and who likely have massive inferiority/superiority complexes due to being social outcasts, it's inevitable. But we've gotten to a point in this industry where the average age of a gamer is approaching 35 years of age (I'm 30 myself), and things aren't getting better...they're actually getting worse. If someone disagrees these days, the very first reply is so loaded with venom and hatred, it's almost impossible to believe that both people supposedly enjoy the same hobby. I've often thought the haters must abhor picking up a controller; they despise everything they see, just because they're "l33t" and know more than every developer and critic on earth. Hence, they only see every negative facet of the production and in turn, focus only on the negatives when dealing with a person.

But why is this happening so often? Has everyone accepted hatred as the common basis for communication when video games are discussed on the Internet? There's no respect, constant suspicion, a recurring and childish belief that "I know more than you" and in general, it's like watching one giant bashfest. Some will say in defense of this behavior that it's "all in fun," but I fail to locate the amusement. Even so-called journalists - or the bloggers posing as journalists, and who, in all actuality, haven't left their mother's basement - are routinely insulting everything they see. Obviously, this could be considered a standard marketing tactic, as they must've noticed that hostility is the only thing gamers recognize anymore. There's only one final aspect to this that confuses me: if you get all these people in a room together, you'd expect it to erupt in a brawl, but instead, they'd all stand there, avoiding glances and looking at shoelaces. Why? Because they're little more than children in semi-adult bodies.

Really, this has to stop. Normally, I don't mind telling people what I do for a living, but it's getting to the point where I don't want them to do any research of their own. All they'll find is the most vile, disgusting, unappealing group of "fans" they've ever had the misfortune to see blast away at each other on a screen. It's just plain embarrassing. All I can say is, "stick to PSXE where we just don't allow any of that, and yet, still seem to get plenty of Comments." It's not impossible to control, but you do have to be diligent and it appears as if we're the only site in existence that remains mostly breezy, civil and laid-back. This isn't a veiled promotion; it's just a statement of fact- for the most part, gamers only wish to attack one another when online, and it isn't helping this industry's image. It really, really isn't. Congratulations on giving more ammunition to the anti-game activists who say violence in video games causes adverse behavior.

If it doesn't, something must be causing this...

Do you agree? How do you think our Fourms are doing?

People just feel the need to argue over things that are so insignificant, like "Hey I got more trophies than you," "Xbox sucks," "I got more Platinum trophies than you!"

People will always feel like they need everyone to like their preferences if not then you are the "enemy"

Like I said always over some dumb insignificant crap.

practice what you preach brutha, lol, JK.

I agree totally with what you are saying. I rarely get hostile towards other players but i do get hostile towards myself, haha.

interesting read.. lets see... gamers play games.. the objective is to win the game, with the most points, most trophies, etc... for no other reason than to say to your friend, "dude I totally won and got xx points and xx trophies"

It's a competetive sport this gaming situation, and with it comes fierce competition. As with any sport it's going to have its fans and sh** talkers.

I don't see the problem?

(other than the immature adolescent rantings that I see right through)

He mentioned he was 30.. maybe if it's too loud, you're too old?

EA: PS3 is a 'very viable' platform

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at the recent Shine Week in London - an event organised by the Department for Children Schools and Families to celebrate the talents of young people - EA UK boss Keith Ramsdale refused to be drawn on recent comments made by Activision CEO Bobby Kotick regarding the need for a PS3 price cut.

"Activision are free to make whatever comment they choose to make on it," said Ramsdale.

Last month Kotick told The Times if a PS3 price cut does not come the publisher "might have to stop supporting Sony”.

EA, however, does not share Kotick's opinion.

"As it stands, the installed base of 360, PS3 and Wii, just talk about the home consoles, is a significant base. We’re interested in the projection parts, as to where we put our development, and as it stands today they’re all three very viable platforms," said Ramsdale.

Commenting on the need for a PS3 price cut, Ramsdale said that ultimately it is Sony's decision to make.

"It’s interesting for a publisher and a developer for the installed base of any format to grow as quickly as it can, but it’s got to be a sustained business," he said. "So, is it in our interest that the installed base of hardware increases? Yeah, of course it is. Sony are the ones that have to manage their own business... it has to be Sony’s decision."

PS3 owner sues Sony after being banned from PSN

The online gaming community can sometimes be a bit harsh, and one PlayStation 3 owner was apparently a bit too excessive for Sony?s liking. The player was banned from the PlayStation Network for his behavior while playing Resistance: Fall of Man and now he is fighting back with a lawsuit against Sony.

Erik Estavillo of San Jose, California believes the ban goes against his First Amendment rights. In court documents acquired by GamePolitics, The UCLA alumni is said to suffer from panic disorder, depression, Crohn?s disease, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Estavillo?s ban has caused him ?pain and suffering? because the PS3 is ?the only way the plaintiff can truly socialize since he also suffers from Agoraphobia.? The documents reveal that he is seeking $55,000 from Sony for his pain and suffering.

He is also accusing Sony of stealing money from users by blocking access to PSN cash acquired through PSN Redeem Cards once a user is banned from the network. Of course, Sony?s PSN user agreement clearly outlines that if your account is terminated for any reason, you will not get any kind of refund.

It will be interesting to see how this case plays out. Do you think Estavillo has a case against Sony given his medical conditions?

There seems to be a lot of talk about unfair banning on game services lately. Any one remember the time when a lesbian got banned from XBL for having an inappropriate user name? Well the XBL incident goes against human rights but this new incident will probably be needed to be investigated in more detail.

Insomniac sticking with Sony for 'foreseeable future'

Celebrated developer Insomniac Games has declared that it intends on sticking at camp Sony for the ?forseeable future,? despite admitting the company has flirted with the possibility of multiformat development.

Speaking with GI.biz, Insomniac?s director of marketing and communications Ryan Schneider commented: ?Sure, as an independent developer, you do consider those options - but at the same time we do have a great relationship with Sony.

?We?ve been with Sony for a long, long time now, and that?s where we intend to stay for the foreseeable future.?

Schneider heaped praise on Sony and its development team, which he described as second to none: ?Sony bends over backwards to work with its development teams. Their product development team is second to none - we absolutely love working with them,? he stated.

?Their PR and marketing folks are terrific to work with and very dedicated to the cause, and there are some very creative people there.

?We feel very fortunate to have that sort of relationship in place.?

Insomniac Games? most recent efforts include the PlayStation 3 sequel Resistance 2 and downloadable title Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty.

What exactly did he say to get banned? It's not a freedom of speach issue if he went against the terms and conditions that he agreed to. I don't know what all of those "diseases" actually mean, probally more made up words so lawyers will have jobs. I got this from some medical site, The essential feature of Agoraphobia is anxiety about being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult (or embarrassing) or in which help may not be available in the event of having a Panic Attack.

Wouldn't most people have this then, I know I don't like being embarassed or being somewhere I can't escape from.

If this guy got banned then he probably deserved it... blaming it on a medical condition is just bs. You decide if you want to be an ******* online or not... lol pain and suffering. I can hear him now... "I am so bummed that I can't be an asshat online anymore". I really hope Sony wins this case...

:BS: I'd be surprised if he wins anything. Or maybe, he will. Considering he's asking so little, it may be a settle out of the court type of thing and just give him half to shut his mouth and not waste Sony's lawyer's time with going to the courts for it and stuff.

They wont. Why? Its a waste of Sony's time. They'll settle out of court for a couple free ps3s and $1000 bucks. :p and psn reinstatement.

PlayStation 3 gets game-plus-film 'hybrid' discs, first one comes on two discs

http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/21/playstation-3-gets-game-plus-film-hybrid-discs-first-one-come/

If you have the dominant high-def optical storage format -- which can serve both movies and games with equal aplomb -- built right into your consoles, shouldn't you be leveraging that synergy? Sony certainly thinks so, and it seems Warner Bros agrees. The two heavyweight sluggers have today announced the very first "hybrid" Blu-ray retail package: the Director's Cut of Watchmen is being sold together with the PS3 version of Watchmen: The End is Nigh Parts 1 and 2 for $49.99. Though this collectible package comes on two discs, the ultimate idea is to have both the game and film on the same disc. At present, you're not saving anything by going this route, but should somebody at Sony HQ wake up and offer a financial incentive to buy them, these hybrid discs could gain traction pretty rapidly -- heck, we might even see worthwhile titles make an appearance on 'em.

i'm with you on this one. get rid of these idiots. i don't care if you have a disorder. you can't just come on expecting to mouth off to everyone. maybe not ban him but disable his mic somehow thru the PSN.

You are absolutely correct to say that everyone has agoraphobia. It's the most convenient "disease" to have. So next time you freak out in public and kill people, remember that agoraphobia is not just a state of mind but an incurable disease that requires compassion and understanding, not jail time.

:hilarious:

This kid is dumb. Unfortunately he'll probably get a small payoff to go away. I hope Sony decides to make an example out of him.

EDIT: Seriously though that first paragraph was a joke. I felt kind of bad after I posted it because there are serious agoraphobics and it's not a funny matter when it's true. I think this kid is a bit full of it though... not like he'll appear in court :hilarious: ok ok, I'm done.

Now it Microsoft were to do the same thing with the 12 year olds playing Halo and Gears, we'll have a proper service for the 360.
