It’s always controversial when someone says they don’t like the Godfather! lol! I must admit I thought it was good but nowhere near as good as everyone makes it out to be. I know it has a lot of people who love it and it has definatly been copied multiple times in past films so I can appreciate it’s an influential film. It’s just nowhere near my top gangster movie.:)
I understand your skepticism but Goodfellas does not portray the mafia correctly if that's one of your higher ups. Casino only plays a small portion of the mafia, it just shows how Las Vegas was kickstarted so to speak. Mario Puzo's Godfather more closely than any other mafia/gangster/mobster movie out. I can understand why a lot of folks don't like The Godfather, it's a Drama, almost a melodrama to be quite frank. Some parts like the wedding are detrimental to to the preface to a larger picture. It's what happens under the table so to speak. Michaels returning from the war, the Godfathers shading dealing in his office. the intro to Luca's mission. There's a lot going on it's just taking the time to see the bigger picture. Also The Godfather 2 touches on what Casino should have and that's how the mafia started in on Las Vegas through the dealing with Mo Green. I watch the first two religiously once every 2-3 months.

I need to give this one another go at some point... took me 2 days to get half way through, until I eventually gave up with it.

Then again, I'm apparently not a big fan of mafia movies, since I also found The Godfather to be incredibly overrated. :muted:
Yeah I’m abit the same mate when it comes to the godfather, didn’t really get what the hype was about and found it quite boring.

Goodfellas and Casino on the other hand were brilliant tho.

Same here mate, it took me about 4 attempts to finally get through Godfather. That damn wedding scene goes on forever! lol. I must admit once I did get through it I thought it was alright but a little too slow for my tastes. Casino and Goodfellas are in an entirely different league IMO. Both more exciting and intense than the Godfather for me.
I still need to watch the Irishman!:)
It's not even really due to the fact that it's slow... I dig a lot of slow films. I just didn't find it the least bit interesting, and I also didn't like a single one of the characters.

I know the second film is generally considered to be even better than the first, but I gave up during the after party scene (or whatever it was) at the very beginning, as it just felt like more of the same lol.

Hope you have better luck with The Irishman anyway mate. I reckon it's better than Godfather and did have some standout moments in the 1:30 mins of it that I saw, so will most likely give it another go at some point.

BLASPHEMY!!!
OMG I can’t believe what I’m reading. Imho there is no other gangster movie that holds a candle to The Godfather. That’s like comparing the movie Young Guns to what Billy the Kid was like, it’s like oil to water... it don’t mix.

Haha people always look at me like I've just cussed at their mother when I tell them I don't like The Godfather, so I'm actually surprised the majority of folks in here have so far agreed with me lol.

It's right at the bottom of the barrel for me in terms of "gangster/mafia" films. But as I said before... there's not actually many I do like, so maybe they're genuinely just not my thing - I wish I knew why!

No doubt, I’m sure The Godfather is far more realistic. There’s a real glamour on goodfellas and Casino so I'm guessing parts of it may be fabricated to appeal to the viewer.
It definatly does feel more like a drama than I thought it would be. Maybe that’s why I don’t quite get along with it. I must admit I’ve never watched any of the sequels so maybe that could change my opinion.

Thanks mate, I have heard good things about it so hoped I will get through it. It is pretty long though so I can’t see me watching it in one go! Lol.
I never even got to the sequel mate, if a films really long I’ve got to be in the mood for it and I’ve just never thought I would be able to get through it! Lol.

Haha yeah, I always planned to watch it in a couple of sittings, but it took me two nights just to make it half way through, and by then I couldn't be bothered with it anymore after that lol.

I hear ya dude... I have to be really bored to convince myself to sit down and watch a 3+ hour movie, as I often feel like I could be doing other things with those few hours (like napping :p).

Haha yep! :D I have to battle sometimes to watch longer movies! I do get in to them most of the time and I’m one of those that will stick with it if I can but sometimes even I give up! Lol.
That’s another bugbear of mine, why are films so long these days! Every film is over 2 hours! I didn’t mind it when we had 90 minute films, even horrors are over 2 hours long these days. Damn things have changed! I will shut up whinging now!

I started to watch The Irishman last night, it has a Casino-esk touch to it where there is Over-Narration to it explaining bits here and there as well as Over-Text throw ins explaining bits here and there as well. I feel like that's not really giving the movie away by any means but if that's not your cup of tea then I'd stay away from this movie. Because of this is why imho Casino and Goodfellas will never hold their own against The Godfather where they don't do that crap, it's a regular movie like it should be. Because of this I don't know if I'll finish watching it or not despite the awesome actors and acting I'll have to give it some thought first.

Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood 2/5

I was extremely disappointed with this. I'm normally up for a bit of Tarantino self-indulgence but this took the piss a bit. So much wasted time in the first half of the movie, proven by the fact that a voiceover was needed halfway through to create a setup for the final part because the first part failed to do so. As usual Tarantino seems to create scenes and stitch them together rather than create a story (interesting that for me the most complete story he has done was based on a novel, Jackie Brown). It looked great, sounds great, and Pitt/DiCaprio/Robbie are great, but it was all a bit 'so what'. Tarantino needs someone to challenge his creative choices, as it doesn't seem like anyone is at the moment and his films are becoming more and more bloated because of it.

Loved it! But...
How did the son get the letter to his father? And why did his father kill the rich guy in the first place? Was it because he said he smelt? What happened to the remaining members of the rich family? Did the young boy survive?

These aren't complaints by the way, just curiosities. :D

I was disappointed as well. Didn't like what he did with a specific topic and as you said needs someone to reign in some of his more outlandish bits.

Well, the story - non existence, the editing is all over the place.
Loud and noisy, bullets n bodycount (and some body parts :hilarious:), total mayhem but hey is a 'Bay' movie - what did you really expect :D
Just sit back and watch ... try not to waste braincells making sense of it all, you'll enjoy it more.

Little Women
8/10

Powerhouse cast, Saoirse Ronan was mesmerising, and Florence Pugh superb. No week links. Saw it at a preview screening last night. Excellent.

Pretty much more of the same, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I just expected more.

The Devil Rides Out. 7th August 1967

The last truly great Hammer classic. A tale of satanic cult worship and an encounter with the devil. The Duke De Richleau (Christopher Lee) in an attempt to rescue the son of his old friend from an evil cult encounters a satanic cult run by Charles Grey (Mocata). With the help of an old friend Rex Von Ryn they fight to save the soul of his old friend's son.
This is the new Anolis mediabook which gives you two discs. The original version and the second disc with updated special effects. The new one with special effects wins hands down. The old effects were poor. One of the rare times in which a great film is let down by poor effects and this overhaul gives it the final polish it always needed.
A flawless film about Devil Worship that's never been matched. Enjoy (with the lights out!)
