Original announcement:
In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year's smash hit Godzilla.

"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm, said Edwards.

Gary Whittas screenwriting credits include 2010s The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Whitta states, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

I enjoyed it, I would rank the films thusly:
Return of the Jedi
The Force Awakens
Rogue One
Return of the Jedi
Star Wars (A New Hope)
Revenge of the Sith
Attack of the Clones
Phantom Menace

It's kind of funny, as a standalone I think rogue one is better than the force awakens but I ranked it lower in my ranking because it seems detached. Obviously this was by design and it was gritty with real stakes. Definitely don't need to convince this crowd but it's definitely worth checking out in theaters.

You got ROTJ twice .......so where does Empire Strikes Back land ?

Ha, didn't even notice that. I meant to put Empire first. I like the darker tone.

Actually I saw a video on the nerdist YouTube channel that talked about the reshoots and how they change the film based on earlier trailers and how things were cut. Evidently they came to the conclusion that the original cut was darker and grittier but didn't test well so that was the reason for the reshoots. I for one would love to see that cut of the film.

Finally saw it.
Wow... never ever imagined/dreamed that the BIGGEST Star Wars plot hole EVER would finally be filled. Way to go R1 writers, you have my FULL and DEEPEST respect as now, ALL this makes perfect sense!

I've re-watched yesterday EpIV and couldn't be happier as it was purely fresh and geez do they put a lot of references to it.... Tx Disney/Lucasarts for this AWESOME 2½hrs. I owe you!

Vader and the CGI characters made my day!
Oh and a special achievement award to K-2SO. Stole the show everytime he "opens" his mouth!

K-2SO was brilliantly written, best droid of the Star Wars universe!

At first I wasn't feeling the humor from K2S0 but another 10 mins in and I enjoyed it like the rest. I just wonder how well it will hold up. I know that its very similar to like RDJ's Tony Stark one-liners etc. which I think go from like 100% effective on first viewing to 50% and so forth on subsequent ... so I wonder over the years how well this will hold up. For the moment tho, spectacular film who doesn't like a heist film in the galaxy / universe.

My personal ranking of the Star Wars spin-offs:

1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
2. Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure.
3. The Ewoks: Battle for Endor

Finally went to see this last night and I absolutely loved it! So cool to finally see why everyone was banging on about the ending...
...the Vader scene alone was one of the best things I saw in 2016. So EPIC!! :OMG:

I definitely need to rewatch it to take everything in properly though, because like with Force Awakens I was far too giddy to concentrate on what was actually being said half the time. :p

Now comes the agonising wait for the Blu-ray release. :arghh:

Hate to be thick but what's the plot hole that's been hinted at a few times here. I wasn't aware of any! Use spoiler please if you want to reply. Don't want to annoy any fans out there who don't want to know.
